It is my understanding that the 10% credit with $4000 cap for
conversions is set to expire the end of this year. I am not finding
any information as to what (if any) credit or rebate is going to be
offered to plug-in conversions in it's place.

The vibe that I get from the media I've seen is that the feds are
planning to introduce tax rebates to replace some of the tax credits.
This sounds good, but in this economic climate it makes sense for them
to do this in such a way that stimulates new car sales, and thus,
offer it only to new vehicle purchases. I don't see them being
motivated to give strong incentives for the DIY or commercial
conversion of preexisting vehicles. It won't stimulate the economy.
If my suspicion is correct, this will leave conversion customers high
and dry.

Is anyone really 'plugged in' to what's going on on this front? Is it
better to get our conversions into service before 2012, or roll the
dice on the hopes that there will be an improvement from 2011 to 2012
with regard to tax incentives for conversions? To me, waiting seems
to be a risky bet. Thoughts or insights appreciated.

You might want to touch base with Jay Friedland (j...@pluginamerica.org ) and get his take on the situation.
He is PlugInAmerica's legislative director. We both have regular meetings with the rest of the team and exchange updates. Last week he did provide a short summary which he may be willing to pass along to you.

The climate is looking dismal for further extensions. Conversions are already a minority and personally I don't think they'll get much future support. But never say never...
