I've uploaded many non-Apple epub books to Books. When I drag and drop them from Books to my computer, other programs (like Calibre) cannot read them. Are they stuck with some DRM or such? All the instructions that I've seen say you should be able to export them by drag and drop.

So, Apple may tell you that just drag-and-drop exports the file, the truth is that it cannot be read by other programs. Yet another way Apple locks you into their ecosystem. They just don't play well with others.

Don't get me wrong - I'm an Apple guy through and through... got more Apple devices than I have toes, but every once in a while I need a bit of flexibility. This problem keeps me from sharing MY files with non-Apple users.

What is the exact error message that you receive, if any? Were these ePub books previously stored in the iCloud Files app? If so, the format of the ePub books should remain. Please use the Files apps to determine if the format to the ePub books has changed.

Thanks for the response. Maybe a better explanation of how to export books would help; I found several answers that say to just drag-and-drop to my Downloads folder and then import to other programs normally. Calibre opens if I say File, Open With from my directory, but does not read the file - just does nothing. If, within Calibre I try to import the epub, it pops up with a "Failed to open", then shows my directory and the file name as the name of the imported file. Trying to open that link just says its not there. Most of the error message says:

I didn't quite catch you. Did you get able to export the epub from apple book? As the instruction, copy the epub file for your book folder and change the file type to zip, then drag to the epub zip-unzip 64(Macos), it will generate a new epub file which you can open either in calibre or open ebook app. it works for me now.

Thanks for the follow-up info. We'd like to suggest booting the computer in safe mode, as this will isolate any problems that might be caused by specifics apps or software. Follow the guidance provided in the Apple Support article: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Sorry to say, I have not cured the problem yet. I've tried re-booting, Safe mode, changing type of file, turning off accessories, and nothing seems to make a difference. I off-loaded quite a few books recently, now I have to go back and verify if they even work.

Calibre strokes out when it tries to import the Books epubs because they are no longer epubs, but zipped Books files. If you right-click on the epub it shows meta contents. That's why I can Export a file, then import it again to Books with no problem. Just a no-go with Calibre.

I have digital editions installed to manage by ebooks. Since I am having issues with some books being too small to read comfortably on screen in pdf format, I was going to try and purchase a couple of new books and "save" them in epub format. It seems like they keep automatically saving in .pdf, and I can't figure out how to get them into epub format. When I buy the books, it reports the books as supporting adobe formats or whatever, but there doesn't seem to be anything that specifies if that is pdf or epub. How can I either specify that, or have digital editions do that conversion so that I have the reflowable read. My device (Kobe reader) supports either.

The bookstore determines the format that you will get the book in. In your case they are giving you the book in PDF format. ADE will not let you change the format, so if you would prefer to have the content as ePub you will need to contact the bookseller to state your preference.

I seem to be caught between various support organizations with something I don't understand. When I click on the info for the book on the Penguin website, it reports that book is "eBook: Adobe reader", it doesn't specify either .pdf or .ePub. I get the .acsm file, and dowload the book in Adobe Digital Editions, and the result is that I have a .pdf book on my PC hard drive that I can then use digital editions to connect to the device and transfer. Penguin support seems to be stuck on it being a digital editions problem. Here was their response, of course it was less than helpful and I sent another question into them. I guess bottom line is if I could tell if a book was .pdf or .ePub before I bought it, or could specify the format it was retrieved in, I would continue to purchase, barring that I can't continue. Would you have any advice on how I could phrase my question to them?

I Just finished a 72 page book with Affinity Publisher. Now I need to cover the book into epub but there is no option to do this in affinity Publisher. With most books having epub versions this is a critical feature to have.

If they're non-DRM epub books, you could use a third party reader. Otherwise, it may depend on what version of Android you're running. Generally you're stuck with whatever options Google offers. With DRM (paid/protected) books you pretty much have to play by their rules as that's what stops people from say sharing books with those who haven't paid for them.

You can see in the screenshots the settings for all books. You can see in the second screenshot that one file is beautiful and is adding line spaces and the other is indented and looks awful. This is really urgent!!!

The working export on the right in your screenshot, The Disconnect Principle, appears to have no CSS saved for EPUB exports specifically (in Custom Styles > Your Ebook Styles) while the export on the left with unwanted indenting does.

Hi. Your current process with PDFs just relies on the fact that an Evernote attachment can be opened by any suitable editor, and the amended version saved back to the note. No special 'integration' required. If you can find some specialist epub software with an editor that allows you to highlight text and save back to an epub file, that should be enough. Some web searching and research required though, I think - please let us know if you find a good epub editor.

You could also look into whether highlights transfer when an edited PDF file is converted to an epub file. Calibre is certainly capable of converting the epub file to PDF and back. It also has some epub editing features. Calibre has an inbuilt library folder, but it also edits epubs. It could be useful to try it out.

It would be (IMHO) highly unlikely for Evernote to want to be directly involved in any of this unless there are a lot of users desperate for something similar. You could post in the section below to see if there is any support for the suggestion...
General Feature Requests

Just did a bit more research, it seems that epub files don't support any annotation functionality within themselves. Its the e-reader software that creates that ability, but the annotations never get stored in-file. Which means that, at least for now, I'll have to content myself with exporting highlights as an external file and plonking those into Evernote.

Or converting the epub files to PDF... but then I'll run into another issue, which is whether annotated PDFs will automatically be saved back into Evernote when I'm on a tablet. I'll probably have to manually reupload the changed file every time I'm done reading.

Phew! But nah, I won't make a feature request to Evernote as I'm sure they'll just ignore it. If its taken 7 years of people wanting different highlighter colours and its still not happened, then I doubt they'll add epub reading capabilities any time soon.

I found that the program Mozbackup was taking forever to back up Firefox, and the resulting compressed .pcv backup file was HUGE - Gigabytes. I then checked my Firefox profile and found that it had stored this huge epub folder. I often download books from TUEBL but see absolutely no use storing any of this stuff in the Firefox Profile. This problem is the same in my little Toshiba Netbook except that the epub folder was over 4GB. In both computers I have sent the epub fiolder to the Recycle Bin, and Firefox and Mozbackup now work correctly. If this continues OK, I will permanently delete these epub folders.

Maybe it has a hidden setting to relocate its default folder to, say, Documents? Or maybe that feature can be added? There is a contact link at the bottom of that page to submit questions that aren't answered on the site.

Do you view the epub in a tab using a plugin instead of saving it to disk first? Usually Firefox would use the Windows temp folder in that case, but maybe an add-on is setting up a folder in the profile?

I have to amend the previous reply: there is a folder in your "real" profile folder named storage that sites can use to store data using a database technology through a script. Typically the amounts are small, and you would get a prompt for permission to store anything large in there. Also, the folders usually are named for the website that stored the data. Is that were you found the epub folder?

Thank you for your very prompt response. I do view the epub files in a tab using the plug-in, and save the files in a totally separate folder. I am using an extension called EPUBReader and a Plug in from Sony called Reader Application Detector. In both computers the Firefox Profile is stored under Roaming.

Re your later response, thanks once again but I do not get any prompt, and the epub sub-folder is stored alongside all the other sub-folders in the Profiles folder under a sub-folder called 5e1idigs.default. My Mozbackup file has now reduced from Gigabytes to 20kBytes - much more reasonable.

PRC is a generic format, calibre supports PRC files with TextRead and MOBIBook headers.PDB is also a generic format. calibre supports eReader, Plucker (input only), PML and zTxt PDB files.DJVU support is only for converting DJVU files that contain embedded text. These are typically generated by OCR software.MOBI books can be of two types Mobi6 and KF8. calibre fully supports both. MOBI files often have .azw or .azw3 file extensions.DOCX files from Microsoft Word 2007 and newer are supported.
