Article: CHYAWANPRASH (DIVINE
RASAYANA) - A
SCIENTIFIC APPRAISAL |
|
by J.K. Ojha and K.N.
Dwivedi
The word Chyawanprash
is composed of two words 'Chyawana' and 'prasha'. The former stands
for the name of sage. the word also denotes "degenerative changes".
The later word denotes a drug or diet, which is fit for ingestion.
Chyawanprash thus means, a drug or diet (or both) which was
originally meant for rejuvenating an ancient sage, Maharishi Chyawan
and later used in disease of decay, wasting and degenerative
processes. We first come across Chyawanprash in Charaka Samhita
(2000 BC) in the first chapter of Chikitasasthana called
Abhayamalakiya Rasayana Pada.
Chyawanprash
is a formulation which is evolved from a hypothetical concept to a
reality. Its evolution didn't stop even after the product was
realized and remained dynamic in subsequent stage of history. As a
whole, the concept of Chyawanprash Rasayana covers three medical
branches of knowledge - Immunology, Metabolism and
Endocrinology.
Use
of Chyawanaprash is indicated for both preventive and therapeutic
applications. According to Charaka Samhita, Chyawanprash is
particularly useful in the following diseases: Kasa (Cough), Shvasa
(Asthma), Kshaya (Pulmonary tuberculosis), Ksina (Renal
tuberculosis), Svarabheda (Laryngitis or voice disorders), Uroroga
(Chest diseases), Vatarakta (Gout), Pipasa (Excessive thirst), Mutra
roga (Urinary disorders), Sukra or Reto dosha (Seminal
disorders).
The
study was conducted in our institute absolutely on scientific
footings and the subjective assessment was done according to the
protocol. Another important study observed the effect of
Chyawanprash on seasonal influence over general health like Summer,
winter and rainy seasons along with round the year. The result was
assessed on objective parameters like radiological examination,
sonological examination, eminological examination, routine
biochemical investigation before and after the use of Chyawanprash.
The most important information collected is that it has got very
impressive role on immunological
achievements. |

Yoga:
TARA (TADA) ASANA |
Asana
for Asthma
Position
of Readiness:
Stand up by making a forty-five degree
angle with the feet. Let the hands hang loosely on the sides. Keep
the body straight and look in front at the level of the eyes.
Breathe normally. This is the position of
readiness.
Step
for Practice:
Before
describing the steps it needs to be pointed out that it is a kriya
of the hands and the arms. In this kriya hands and folded six times
according to the following process:
-
Make
the hands tight and gradually raise them in front while inhaling.
By the time the hands have been brought in front on the level of
the shoulders, inhaling should be completed. Now hold the breath.
Keep the palms upwards. Keep the hands straight, parallel and
firm. This is the first fold.
-
After
giving a pause for a second on the first fold, turn the palms
downward and move the hands on their respective sides. During this
second fold, let the hands come at level with the shoulders in
such a way that they are in one line. Keep looking straight in
front while holding the breath.
-
After
giving a pause for a second on the second fold, bring the hands
again in front keeping the palms downward. Keep the hands
tightened and parallel to one another. The distance between the
hands should be six inches for teenagers and eight inches for
adults. Give a pause for a second on this fold.
-
Then
turn the palm to face one another and lift another when fully
raised upwards and the distance between them should be six to
eight inches. Keep looking straight forward. Do not bend the body.
Stay in that position for only a second.
-
Now
twist the palms facing downward and bring the hands to the sides
as you were in the second fold. Palms are downwards. Hands are
tightened and they are straight in one line. Stay there for a
second. You have to hold the breath up to this fold.
-
Then
start exhaling and slowly lowering the hands down. When the hands
have returned to the sides, you should have exhaled completely.
Now loosen the body and rest. Let the hands hang loosely. You have
completed one round of Tara Asana. After resting for two deep
breaths make more rounds by following the same process.
Daily
Practice:
Do
it only
three times a day during the first week. During the second week and
after, increase to four times daily. Five times is maximum in a
day.
Benefits:
Tara
asana has a good strengthening effect upon the lungs and chest.
Though the outward activation in this kriya is of hands, it brings
internal activation of the lungs, muscles of the chest and the
respiration system. For the asthmatics, therefore, it provides a
corrective as well as strengthening effect to their bronchioles and
lungs.
For
the general practitioners Tara Asana has several benefits. It
enhances the measurement of the chest. those whose chest is not
properly developed can find it more rewarding for making it
proportionate. It builds up the muscles of the chest in an all round
way and has a curative effect of any disorders of that
area.
Those
who wish to add a few inches to their height might also find it very
rewarding. People suffering from pain in their shoulder-joint can
correct these disorders through Tara Asana. It is easy to do. People
of any age group can do
it. | |
