Friends,
I wanted to update you on efforts at St. John’s which might be of use to you in your churches. Between Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day this year, St. John’s will again hold its Adopt-A-Student Fundraising Campaign to raise money for the tuition and supplies needed at Chapoteau in the coming school year. While our parishioners do not adopt a particular student, we do ask them to give $250 for a full scholarship for a student at Chapoteau or $125 for a half scholarship.
To strengthen our bond with the school, our Committee for Cange at St. John’s has asked Ali Lutz at Partners in Health if she could gather some up-to-date information on the school, some new pictures of the school and a letter from the principal describing the school and the students and the effect of our donations. Below, Ali has gathered some of the information. Attached are some photographs from Fr. Lafontant’s recent visit to the Church of St. Matthew in Chapoteau. Ali will email me the additional photographs and the letter.
Our goal at St. John’s is to raise enough money for 48 students - $12,000. When I receive the letter and photographs, I will forward them to you to use as you see fit. You might want to hold a similar fundraising campaign in your parish. Please call me if you can assist you.

Dear Ned,
Marie Flore and Jackie passed your email on to me about Chapoteau. Thank you for reaching out about your annual fundraising campaign for the school in Chapoteau. Your ongoing commitment to the school, the children, and the community of Chapoteau means a great deal to me and to the entire team. Your dedication is inspiring.
I have pasted below information about the St Matthew School in Chapoteau for this year. I am attaching photos of a visit Father Lafontant made to the St Matthew’s church in Chapoteau (right next to the school) in Jun 2010. I will work on getting recent photos of the school for you, as well as a letter from the school director.
All my best from Cange,
Ali

St Mathieu Chapoteau
2010-2011: 222 students (127 girls and 95 boys) in 9 classes: 3 preschool classes; 6 elementary classes (1st-6th grade). There are 9 teachers plus the school director. 2 cooks who make daily hot lunches.
The biggest needs are school materials –especially the workbooks with the class exercises—plus notebooks, pencils, etc.
Subjects taught
French
Creole
Math
Social sciences
Science (health, nature)
Evaluation
Students take quarterly exams. Students receive a report card with their exam results and grades.
For students in the 6th grade, their final exam are the national exams. If they pass, they are given a certificate from the government of Haiti certifying that they completed primary school. At St Mathieu last year, all 25 students in the 6th grade class passed their national exams.
Sports
The main sport is soccer (for both boys and girls), but volleyball is also popular. Many girls jump rope during recess. They have at least 30 minutes of recess every day.
Infrastructure
There are 6 new classroom buildings and an office which were built about 2 years ago where the elementary classes meet.
The preschool classes meet in the old school building, which is in great need of renovation.
The kitchen is not yet finished.

Jackie,
From Earl Burch, I received word that you would be glad to help us in our efforts to raise money for Chapoteau. Your help would be very valuable. St. John’s in Columbia will hold its annual fundraising campaign for the school in Chapoteau from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day. This year we hope to raise at least $12,000 to defray the costs of tuition and lunches. Members of our committee believe that it would help if we could establish a more personal relationship with the people of Chapoteau. Would it be possible for the school’s principal or a teacher to write us a short letter about the school and students? The principal might mention how many students attend the school, in what grades, what subjects do they study, what sports do they play, what facilities have been completed at the school and what facilities must still be built and how our contributions assist them. We would also welcome pictures of the students and the school. The committee would use the pictures and letters in our brochure, web site and posters. We would also gladly share the pictures and letters with the Chapoteau Partners, the other churches in the Midlands that have adopted the school in Chapoteau. The pictures and letter could be emailed to me. I would be glad to speak with you further. We would greatly appreciate anything you could do, Jackie, to help us help the people of Chapoteau. Thank you.

Galen (and others),
The cut-outs of Chapoteau students are a great way to measure the success of your fundraising. Do the girls wear blue and the boys red? We will be re-working our brochure and when it’s ready we will share it. Others can edit to their needs.
