Is there an update on the February stabbing incident since the 3/1 selectmen's memo?
Also can we hear more about rejuvenating our neighborhood crime watch group that
used to be supervised by our resident state trooper?
Thank you
Myrna Riquier
Well Chris, what I remember is......
Different sections of town had individual groups who would meet individually. For example, the (previous) owner of your home headed up the group for the Bedlam Road area. We also met with our resident State Trooper at the town hall from time to time. Everybody in town was invited. I will say that Trooper was very-very into the concept. He kept us updated on what was happening in Chaplin. We were always surprised to hear that so much "stuff" was going on in our quiet little town; car and home break-ins, etc., and stabbings are not new to Chaplin. You have to wonder how do the Troopers handled it all.
We had all learned to keep records on suspicious stuff, etc. I still have those materials handy in my car. Perhaps the reason the Trooper was so interested in having a crime watch group was that he needed the extra help we could sometimes provide. I'm just sayin'…at the time there seemed to be a lot more going on than I would have ever guessed. We wouldn't have been apprised of it if it hadn't been for that particular Trooper who felt we should know. It just doesn't make it to the newspaper so that
has left us pretty much in the dark since he departed.
Of course now that tragedy in Florida has given crime watch a bad image.
Thinking back, there were a couple of men (I was not 76 at the time so I can't recall who they were now, but maybe they will speak up) who were instrumental in getting
our crime watch organization off the ground and they worked very closely with the Trooper putting it all together. They were a blessing. I produced a segment of the On
the Homefront TV show on Charter and those two men participated in that to let other towns know how nicely organized we were. I think the Trooper sat in on that show too.
When Wilene left Chaplin our state trooper was swapped out around the same time. It seems that is when it all fell through the cracks.
We had a very well organized group although it was mentioned in the newspaper recently as though it was a brand new concept for Chaplin. Thanks for asking.
Myrna
p.s. You wanted to know when this happened…..but you ask for too much! LOL
