Ok, so I am new to the linux world and I have a job ironically at
Logical Solutions. I am looking for anyone that has a spare server I
can use. I have an older desktop, but I am not dying to spend money on
extra RAM just to make it work. I am looking for something that either
is or has been a server and can still run well.

Main reason is that I want to have a server I can play with, to teach
myself the ins and outs of making email, file, print, and most
importantly a LAMP server. I just dont have any way to do it.

If any of you have any ideas or suggestions let me know, I would
greatly appreciate it!

Hmm, can't Kent score you one of those cold-war era theater servers? ;)

Barring that, maybe there's an unused one in the LOLpht. Or, I imagine
there's somebody on this list wanting to reduce their closet
inventory...

If none of that works, you can get one for super-cheap from ALBOES in
town (they have used PCs and parts and such).

Cheers!

If you have an older desktop linux is perfect for it, depending which distro you get.  Those old IQ2k Eater was referring to were like 33Mhz-133Mhz CPU with like 8-32mb ram.  IIRC

When I was there I was running slackware on LSIs old POS computer I brought in an old voodoo banshee video card to do the GUI better.

Second what david and eater said, if you can get ahold of an axiom,
they're perfect for it (mainly because they're really not a damn bit of
good for anything else!). There's also a bunch of old ISA-bus pentium
class computers back in the warehouse that would be good for it
providing that you're willing to grind on the technical details and
make it work, and that they'd let one of those dinosaurs go. Failing
that, I've got a couple of systems in my closet that - I think - still
work, and I know Honkeykong just rebuilt his machine, so he probly has
parts he'll let you have on the cheap.

Speaking of the lolpht, what happened at that last meeting (or do you
know)? Didn't Speed and Five get some guys together a month or so ago? I
meant to go, but life is what happens when you make other plans.

Haha, I was looking at the cold-war era servers yesterday. I think I
heard that they had plans to give them to kids to use or something...

Will Check into that though...lol

Well with the 256 mgb of RAM I have in it, it stinks horribly running
Ubuntu...hence the reason I am clamering for something better...it
runs DSL pretty decent though so far.

Yea, the way they are about the dinosaurs around the office, I doubt I
would even get an Axiom if I wanted one haha...I am going to check it
all out though.

If I may ... For serious learning/hacking, get rid of Ubuntu, and pick
up a bare-bones distro like Slackware or Gentoo. Ubuntu comes with alot
of overhead (in the name of ease of use/friendliness) that less
experienced admins/users won't know to look for and sort out. It's not a
problem when you're running on multicore P4s or Xeons with gigs of RAM
like we do here, but in a remotely limited environment, it's really
going to mess with you.
If you did that, then you wouldn't need a new machine. Most of us here
will tell you that if a medium range speed machine with 256mb of ram
won't host your average linux needs, then the answer isn't a better
machine, it's a re-tooling of the linux on it.

This is a bit of OT... But it sort of relates... I just recently
discovered the world of hacking into portable NAS HDDs that use Linux
and the operating system. I was quite surprised as to what all i could
get my WD My book world edition to do not to mention its has 750GB of
storage on board :D

Obviously you haven't read this:

"""
And von Neumann spoke unto the Architecture, and blessed it, saying,
"Go forth and replicate, freely exchanging data and code, and bring
forth all manner of devices unto the earth." And it was so, and it was
cool. The Architecture prospered and was implemented in hardware and
software. And it brought forth many Systems unto the earth.
