I put a Linksys WRT54G in Rhino's Thursday night (2007/19/25). It's
connected to the Knology cable modem that Rhino's has, and was
providing "100%" signal strength in the back part of the club [the
mezzanine]. Preliminary tests show 5Mb down/3Mb up.

What do I need to do to tie this new hotspot in to the CFN mesh?

First off the access point needs to be running firmware with a linux
kernel. All the current nodes are running OpenWRT but DD-WRT should
work too. Second you will need to install wifi-dog ( http://dev.wifidog.org/
) and make sure all the packages that wifi-dog needs are installed as
well. I can help you set things up. Only problem is my free time is
almost non-existent lately and rhino's is closed during the day when I
do have free time.

Here is one thing work pointing out:
If the hardware has limited flash storage for firmware and requires
using a stripped down version of OpenWRT, DD-WRT or whatever firmware,
then it probably won't be able to run wifi-dog because of all the
package requirements.

Ryan,

I did. Sorry I never got back to you. I can't find the message now.
Refresh my memory. Seems like you mentioned throttling bandwidth and
asked if we had available hardware. As for the hardware, we have some
linksys units available but they may be flaky. I know some were
pulled because they were not stable. (Ok who boosted the wireless TX
power levels???) My recommendation would be to get the guys at
CyberLanding to pay for a device supported by OpenWRT and let us set
it up for them.

5A, I hope this message posts (some of mine haven't, so I'm not sure, thus I'm sending Tim a copt and he can respond and /that/ may post)... but I'm sending this on to Shane of Rhino's, who will most likely make it possible for y'all to get inside to work on this... also will call Brent with this news.

And Timothy, thanks again for your help in making last night's open mic another success. You'verseen the lackluster attendance (both performers /and/ audiences in the other OMs here in Shadowville, and it was heartening to see that this can be done right, and Rhino's is the place to make it happen, on all fronts.

How far away are we from getting the live streaming broadcasts upo and kicking at Rhino's?

This is the one clip I did manage to get recorded up to YouTube last
night - The problem referred to in the clip is a still-unexplained
mal-function in Adobe Flash Player's mic + video stream acquisition
under Windows Vista...

type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425"

Here is the URL for the clip in case the object embed element doesn't
come thru: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYIYy2hIOY8

The newest versions of dd-wrt have wifidog pre-installed.  If the router has a larger flash (>2m), you can install the dd-wrt beta.
