If you don't see an option to install Visio or if you selected Install Office from the office.com home page and Office begins to download immediately, cancel that installation and do the following.
After you download the Office Deployment Tool, double-click on the officedeploymenttool executable (.exe) file to extract the ODT files. When you're finished, you should have several files: setup.exe and some sample configuration.xml files. For an Office LTSC 2021-specific sample, see Sample configuration.xml file to use with the Office Deployment Tool.
On 22 September 2015, Visio 2016 was released alongside Microsoft Office 2016. A few new features have been added such as one-step connectivity with Excel data, information rights management (IRM) protection for Visio files, modernized shapes for office layout, detailed shapes for site plans, updated shapes for floor plans, modern shapes for home plans, IEEE compliant shapes for electrical diagrams, new range of starter diagrams, and new themes for the Visio interface.[9]
If you are working on a DU-Owned Windows computer and need the use of Visio, please go to office365.du.edu and sign in with your DU Email account. Once you are here, please click the install office drop-down at the top right, and select other install options. On the next page click view apps & devices, if you have a Visio license for your account, the option to download Visio should be available there, if it is not, please submit a ticket or call the IT Help Center at (303) 871-4700. Requests for this software must be provided by a benefited staff or faculty member.
Microsoft Visio Pro licenses are available for lease through the Division of Information Technology for faculty and staff who need to create flowcharts, network diagrams, org charts, floor plans, and more.
Upon completion of the license request, an invoice will be sent to the requesting department. Prior to provisioning the license request, payment must be made to Division of Information Technology via interfund voucher (IFV) or KSU Foundation check for faculty/staff licenses. The Division of Information Technology is unable to accept personal payment for these licenses. Within seven days of receipt of payment, individuals will receive an email notifying them that Visio is available in their Office 365 apps.
In early January, the Division of Information Technology will send current Visio Pro licensees a renewal invoice in early December. License privileges are automatically revoked for non-renewed licenses.
The Visio download is a desktop application that will only function on Windows. All OU accounts have access to a browser-only version with reduced functionality that is available at portal.office.com for free. Browser-based software will run on Windows and Mac operating systems. To access this software on a browser, log in with your @ou or @ouhsc account at portal.office.com, click the cluster of dots in the top left of the screen, then select "All apps" to see available programs.
The Visio web app does not have the ability of editing the actual dimension of shapes. Update Summer 2023 : The web edition does now have the Format Options which includes Dimensions. Sure, you can re-size shapes using the handles, but unlike the desktop app, you cannot type in the size that you want a shape to be. Moreover, the desktop app has a Size & Position window where you can enter dimensions as Metric or US Units, provided you add the correct suffixes, and you can enter some mathematical formulas. This lack of dimensional capability may be ok for schematic diagrams, such as flowcharts and organisational charts, but is definitely a serious handicap for any measured type of drawings, such as office layouts or rack elevations.
CAD (*.dwg) files can be inserted into pages using Visio desktop, and these Visio documents can be viewed online with the Microsoft File Viewer, but they cannot be edited using the Visio web app yet. However, the desktop app can be used to convert selected layers into native Visio graphical elements, which may result in a larger number of shapes, some of which may even be invisible and outside the drawing page! Once I had removed all of the ghost shapes, and ungrouped the single shape that was left which had all of the other converted shapes as member shapes, I was left with too many shapes for the web app to handle in this example of an office floor plan. So, I removed the layers that contained the furniture and workstations because I wanted to re-plan the desk layouts anyway. I was then able to open the floor plan in the web app for editing, however, the lack of dimensional accuracy is a drawback.
