an email was sent out to everyone from a hacked account that has a virus in it

Uh oh. I already tried to open it. Thankfully my pdf reader failed to open it and it gave me an error code. I deleted it from my gmail and my computer and emptied out the recycling bin. I am running my anti-virus software now to see if my computer became infected. Are there any other actions I should take?
Is it something I should worry about?
