I visited some of the good people at the City of Thunder Bay yesterday. They were interested in a whole range of ideas on engaging citizens, and they mentioned Local Government Week.
I wasn't aware of it before, it's an initiative of Ontario's Min of Muni Affairs, apparently focused on schools and kids, but I don't see why it doesn't look at civics education and citizenship more generally. In any case, it would be an interesting opportunity.
Anyway, I also noted that the week (October 18-24th) happens to coincide with Edmonton's ChangeCamp, and was wondering if this might be an opportunity to help get some ChangeCamps going in mid-sized Ontario cities that same weekend. I'm interested in possible media pickup in these local communities to raise awareness of our community overall in other places.
Of course, this is late notice to be recruiting local ChangeCamp organizers and such, and I'm not sure how best that ChangeCamp.ca can support multiple simultaneous events at once. But I would be interested in using it as a test to see how these might best be supported in the future.
Is there anyone one this list that would be interested in exploring this further? We have Sault Ste Marie and Sudbury people here, perhaps others in other cities in Ontario? I could probably find interested Thunder Bay people, Windsor, London, Kitchener-Waterloo and Kingston. Other possibilities?
This would be an opportunity to focus and finally develop a first attempt at an online "ChangeCamp-in-a-Box" resource that we talked about all the way back to ChangeCamp Toronto in January.
