Use chan_dongle on OpenWRT as a 'remote trunk' on separate FreePBX installation

I have a FreePBX installation based on a dedicated CentOS machine.

I also have an OpenWRT router with a 3G dongle as a backup WAN connection in case of internet outage.

The SIM card not only has a data plan, but also a call/sms plan, so I would like to be able to use this same dongle/sim make voice calls.

Is there any way I can leave the 3G dongle I the OpenWRT router but use it as a trunk in my separate FreePBX installation?

I've never really done any direct Asterisk configuration (I've hidden behind FreePBX up until now), but I understand chan_dongle and asterisk are available on OpenWRT. If using the dongle directly between the FreePBX box and the OpenWRT router is not possible, would some sort of forwarding work, whereby the FreePBX box would call via an Asterisk extension on OpenWRT?

I hope this makes sense?

Yes, it can be done.

But i haven't do it.

The theory indicates that u can:

1 - Load up an Asterisk under Openwrt (you need space in the device, maybe an USB flash mem or an external HD). Load up chan_dongle on it. Connect your actual Asterisk to the one under Openwrt via IAX2.
2 - Load usbIP ( http://usbip.sourceforge.net/ ). Share USB port with your server.Manage the modem like local in Asterisk with chan_dongle.

My 2 cents.

Sure! I'm using chan_dongle on openwrt, and clearly you can make a
trunk.

You have to compile chan_dongle on openwrt, indeed, and also configure
the trunk.
So i think you have to learn a bit some ''direct asterisk
configuration'' stuff... ;-)))
