Dear Users,
I am very lucky to find this forum its really interesting. I want to configure dongle with my asterisk server but unfortunately older models are not available in my city. The only available model is Huawei E3531 should I buy this one. Will it work with chan_dongle. Please suggest.

I have an E3531 whose Voice-Functionality is *not* working. Supposedly having voice-support, it just will not allow to place ("NO CARRIER") or receive voice calls (calling phone ends up in a voice message saying that the number is not reachable). USSD (7bit-mode) and SMS work fine though.
It seems to be a problem with the stick itself, as crosschecking with a Voice-enabled Version of Huawei's Mobile Partner Software was also not working. DC-Unlocker says the stick is unlocked, but does not show any info on voice support.
So I would shy away from that dongle and try to get another one, older models will be working without problems but are indeed hard to get.

Regards,
Karsten

I have found some guys that are pretty good @ getting older models on Alibaba.  Ping me directly if you want their details.

I go a little far in the search of compatible modems and maybe my experience is useful to someone.

When i found this channel driver, i use it with some huawei modems i can found in the market in my country (e1753). When i ran out of modems, i decide to find an alternative.

Huawei modems uses a regular dongle chipset, so, i look for a clone. I found some chinese guys that manufacture modems voice enabled with the same chipset. So, with a friend, we decide to buy 4 of them.

Modems work perfect with windows. Comes with the same mobile partner utility than huawei (voice enabled one) and works fine.

But, under linux, it uses a different set of instructions than huawei ones. The ^Cvoice feature still there, but due to a different syntaxis in commands, chan_dongle dont handle it.

I have no enough skills to modify channel driver to work with them, and this chinese guys tell me that they can modify they firmware (with a cost) to make them work with the channel driver.

So, if anyone wants to work on it, there is this an alternative to get new modems at a low cost (about 8-15 u$s). In my case, not enough resources and not enough skills. This made me drop the project.

My 2 cents.

Most refurbished huawei dongle came need voice unlocked. Software dc-unlocker can do that. So i wonder if there is at command to unlock those. Quite pricy to unlock voice around 5 euro

My comment on the E3531 was not denying the possibility that my stick might just have voice disabled. I had also tried some AT-commands manually (minicom on linux) to check its properties, here my findings:

AT+CGMM
E3531
OK

AT+CGMR
21.318.15.00.382
OK

AT^U2DIAG?
ERROR
AT^GETPORTMODE
^GETPORTMODE: TYPE: WCDMA: huawei,MODEM:0,NCM:1,DIAG:2,PCUI:3,CDROM:4,SD:5
OK

AT^CVOICE?
^CVOICE: 1, 8000, 16, 20
OK
AT^CVOICE=0
ERROR

The foremost differences to an E1550/E173 were:
  • the reply to CVOICE? -command returned a 0 as first value instead of the 1 above. This could indeed mean that voice is actually *dis*abled, as I read somewhere on the net that AT^CVOICE=0 would enable, AT^CVOICE=1 would disable voice. As you can see above, trying the enable command yet failed with "ERROR" on the E3531. I could yet not find any Huawei-Documentation regarding the commands return values, the rest of the values seem to be the voice audio parameters. That's where I got the impression that voice would be basically supported but might just be disabled. chan_dongle does not seem to parse that reply string further but bases its assumption whether or not voice is supported on the OK of the reply.
  • GETPORTMODE returns "WCDMA: qualcomm ..." on all my other models. Seems like Huwei might have changed the chipset to an "own" implementation instead of licensing Qualcomm's. No clue if that might impact the voice capability/compatibility to chan_dongle.
  • U2DIAG is not supported (or disabled?) to en-/disable the different USB interfaces.

If anybody has different experiences/settings, I would be glad if you could share them. Maybe it is indeed possible to activate voice for this dongle in the end. Is there maybe a different Firmware also available (as you can see above mine is version 21.318.15.00.382) for this stick that has voice?

Very late reply but this Kazakh firmware for E3531s-1 is known to unlock voice: https://3ginfo.ru/downloads1160.html
At your own risk you can flash it on slightly different models (tested with E3531s-2).

The easiest way to flash on different models is to get the service version of a firmware, here's one for any E3531: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=https%3A%2F%2F4pda.ru%2Fforum%2Findex.php%3Fshowtopic%3D553049%26st%3D940%23Spoil-60987245-2

After that you can flash any firmware on the device, even unsigned or for different models.
