Inthis section I'veincluded a series of flashcards that can be printed and used to reinforcelearning, the complete list of grade four, part one Fry words (see bottom page) and some activityideas for using the flashcards.

The first thing I do is print out and supply the kids with all the previous grades' flashcards and do a quick review of those. This way they have them in their "toolkit" when making sentences and doing creative activities with the grade two cards.

The flashcards can simply be held up, giving the child the opportunity toread each one. But if you're looking for a more engaging activity, trycombining the Dolch flashcards with the noun picture flashcards for a variety ofactivities (I've listed some suggestions here from simplest to hardest). Ifyou're printing the cards for one of the higher grades, you should considerprinting the ones for previous grades as well -- the Dolch words are cummulativeand you'll be able to make more complex sentences.

I earned my degree back in the early '90s, and as a lifelong learner, I continue to delve into the things I love. This includes technology (though I struggle to keep up!), art, early childhood education, history, and mythology as it relates to sociology.

Over half of every newspaper article, textbook, children's story, and novel is composed of these 300 words. It is difficult to write a sentence without using several of the first 300 words in the Fry 1000 Instant Words List.

Many of the Fry 1000 Instant Words are difficult to portray with pictures or hard to sound out through phonics methods. Therefore, these words must be learned as sight words and they must be quickly recognized in order to achieve reading fluency.

If you are using these free Fry 1000 Sight Words teaching resources with your students, please feel free to give your students' parents the address of this webpage (shown below) so that they can print flashcards for their child to practice with at home.

My students love completing the fun book report projects that I have designed. They are always eager to begin reading their next books so that they can start working on their next reading response projects.

I wanted to share these Fry 1000 Instant Words resources with other teachers for free in hopes that the time that I spent developing these flashcards would be more beneficial by reaching even more children who were having difficulty in reading.

After children have mastered reading the Fry 1000 Instant Words at each level, it would be beneficial for them to learn how to spell these words, as they are also the most common words that students use in their own writing.

The Dolch Sight Words are a list of the most frequently used words in the English language. These sight words make up 50 to 70 percent of any general text. The Dolch list was developed by Edward William Dolch, PhD. in 1948 and published in his book "Problems in Reading."

Heart words are high frequency words that have some part of their word irregularly spelled. Students need to know these words by heart because they show up frequently in text and are used often while writing.

A heart word example is the word "the." The /th/ sound matches how it is supposed to be spelled, yet the "e" makes the schwa sound when it really should say its long sound. This word is heart word because part of it is spelled irregularly.

With heart word flashcards, a heart is placed on top of the word part that is not following a pattern. It is always important to point out to students the parts that do follow a phonics pattern, and the parts that don't.

This resource is science based and includes everything you will need to successfully teach your students the heart word method for those tricky, irregularly spelled heart words. This resource also includes background information for the teachers as well as an instructional routine to help your students map Fry's fourth 100 high frequency words. This NO PREP resource will save you time and your students will become heart word masters!

These digital and printable high frequency word flashcards are an easy and engaging way to fit in daily fluency practice. Words are on easy to read, black and white slides so there is no distracting images or patterns. The tricky part of heart words is clearly labeled with an underline and heart. Practice these words using a projector screen, interactive whiteboard, tablet, computer...or print them out for small groups or for students to take home!
