Hi everyone,

It is time to continue the adventures of our intrepid heroes in Evergreen City!

Chris asked a few good questions, and I wanted to outline them here for everyone.

We are up to 505 CP for established characters.  I want new characters to start at the original 400CP level, as a way of not detracting from the legacy characters.  If you write up a background, then they can get up to a bonus 20CP and a profile picture grants a bonus 10 CP (possible 430CP start).

The active point cap is removed.  Kudzu and pretty much all of John's characters made that mute  .  Just be nice, as I'll still allow anything to get by (pretty much), and will only realize what I've allowed at the table in combat.  Then you get 8d6 RKA, armor piecing, automatic mounted laser turret.... , so be nice!

Complications are still set at the standard 75.  If the collective would like less, then let us all know; whatever the group decides is fine.  After watching John and Tyler, I now know how to properly use them (I think).

We need to decide if you would like to start as part of the Guardians or start a new team (unsanctioned).  The latter can have legacy characters in it (sort of a side project to build an auxiliary that aren't on the City's payroll) or just a whole new bunch of idiots trying to make a name for themselves (sometimes may face the Guardians).  An example of this are the Young Patriots.  If you remember, they are a team of three teenagers that have those construction mecha suits painted up in red, white, and blue, and they engage criminal elements around the city as vigilantes.  they've been around long enough and established themselves to the point where the cops cut them a break when needed and they have positive public opinion.

As a follow-on to the above paragraph, I want to reduce the members of the Guardians to a core person for each player on the active roster (players include those not with us at this time like Nick, Eric, and Tyler).  Then, you can have one auxiliary character that is available when needed.  Maybe we will create an A and B team, with the B team being the auxiliary.  The rest can be team support (admin like Cade and Blacklight), on assignment elsewhere / no longer a part of the team (like Raymond Hammond, Eric Weatherby's first character who is now in Vibora City), or just retired (might be called back in emergencies, but likely reluctant to do so).  Think about how you'd like to fill this (John! ), and let me know who is primary and who is auxiliary.  You don't need two PCs at the start (Chris, et al), and not having a second means you have room to fill a slot later when you get bored without sending your existing character to heaven, or turning them into a villain, or working on their Taco Bell franchise... .

Please let me know if I can answer any questions.  I guess I gotta build out the city on a map now, read through my note to remember where things are and which people are in charge.  All this, and I have a wedding to plan!!!!   

Have fun with it!

*yeah Evergreen city!*

1. First off I would like to suggest that everyone start off with the same points. I would like see the team grow with one another. This would allow players like Chris G that has never played in this campaign before to start off equally with everyone else.
2. Active point cap - Thanks for listening to me on this. An active point power of 40 can one shot kill another player. It's just really up to the GM to really look into each power/character design to make sure it fits his world. It's all about balance within the campaign.
3. I'm good with having 75 points of complications
4. New team OR Guardians. Well this really will be up to what everyone will be playing. At the same time it is what you (the GM) feel most comfortable running - and will have fun running.
5. Reducing the members of the Guardians - I'm going to kind of guess what you are saying here. You want us to build 2 characters for the game. One as a primary and one just in case our primary dies? This is of course if we play as one of the Guardians - correct?

I'm really looking forward to jumping back into your game

That's fine with me (as the GM); I was thinking of the experience level that the legacy characters have built vs. the newbies walking through the door.  If everyone starts with a new character, I would prefer we start at the lower level.  I want the Guardians (core team) to be exceptional.  One concern that caused me pause the last time were the new characters entering with the same power level as those Guardians who have been on the field fro a while.

Since most people will be making new characters, if one or two are legacy, then I can work around that.  If the majority were legacy characters, then I can see brinign the newbies up to equal CP.

For right now, build new characters at the 400 CP level (with the bonuses if you add the picture and background), then if we decided to bump everyone up, then you can add the differential as if it was experience.  If it is Iron Maiden shepherding a group of new metas, then I can deal with her being OP by 100 CP.  However if the team was made of IM, Splicer, Micah, and a new character for Chris and Frank, then they could build them at the higher level and explain why they were "transferred" to Evergreen after a successful career elsewhere.

However the way I'm envisioning it at the moment (from our discussions at the table),  everyone is building new except Mark (who is on the fence).  Thus, the new group will basically be sidekicks for IM as she leads the group of misfits and teaches them how to use their powers.  Responsibility will be the equalizer for her, plus I have a habit of hurting heroes via mooks with coordinated attacks. 😎.  And no amount of TK punch power is going to stop a dozen soldiers splitting off into four groups of three, all attacking one hero at a time.  Oh yes, let the pain begin... 😝

2. Active point cap - Thanks for listening to me on this. An active point power of 40 can one shot kill another player. It's just really up to the GM to really look into each power/character design to make sure it fits his world. It's all about balance within the campaign.

You proved this was a good idea in both campaigns, so excellent job on the hard work!  Your characters wreck my adversaries in Evergreen despite the cap, and we dealt with it great in Gotham with no cap.  Plus, it was the limiter on Tyler's multiform PC, and since Patrick wants to make one, it makes sense to release the hounds!

4. New team OR Guardians. Well this really will be up to what everyone will be playing. At the same time it is what you (the GM) feel most comfortable running - and will have fun running.

I'm fine either way.  When we started the game, the question Jason asked was whether we wanted to be freelance or sanctioned.  After discussion, we went with the latter.  Now the option exists to play the former in the same setting to see how it goes.  In a freelance, you'll need to earn the ECPD's trust and possibly dodge your counterparts.  However, you can do a lot more "gray area" actions to get the job done, which will obviously shift the scenarios you encounter.

5. Reducing the members of the Guardians - I'm going to kind of guess what you are saying here. You want us to build 2 characters for the game. One as a primary and one just in case our primary dies? This is of course if we play as one of the Guardians - correct?

No, this was actually to tell you and Patrick to pick two characters and retire the rest. 😁  You can pick one and retire the lot, if you want, too.  For instance, Dante is... somewhere, Micah can go back to heaven, Cade is on desk duty (emergency reserve doesn't count toward the total), Zero Degrees can be in Cali or Hawaii helping out the righteous dudes with the homeless crisis (and catching some killer waves), cause Evergreen is a bummer, and Shadowing can either be running his restaurant (i.e. doing personal jobs) or in another city (tracking down a cartel based in Pittsburgh).

I'm really looking forward to jumping back into your game

Great!  I'm looking forward to it, too.

I second this. My enthusiasm for making a new character nosedives if I'm gonna be 100 points behind everyone else.

I prefer fewer complication points, personally. 50 points, maybe. Or no minimum requirement--but if your complication comes into play, you get an XP for it.

Yeah, this wasn't clear to me either.

1. So everyone is 400 points but our old characters (which are NPC's?) stay at the 505 or we make a 505 character? I believe Patrick is already making his new character at 505 from what we said at the end of the game.
4. New team or Guardians - We need Mark to figure out what he would like to play first. If he wants to play out Iron Maiden it will be hard to play a team that is always attempting to avoid Guardians. So if Iron Maiden joins up we will be Guardians if he doesn't want to play out Iron Maiden then we get to choose what we want to do - my vote would be for new team. If we do freelance are we allowed to still have connections with some of the Guardians?
5. Ok this one sounds like it is directed at me and Patrick.
Micah - goes off to heaven
Shadow Wing - Moves down to LA. He still manages a Taco Bell (his base)
Dante - I can't see him really being "good" anymore for what occurred to him and I honestly see his storyline now as being a villain.
Zero° - will totally catch a wave to Alaska and be based out there. 🤙 Surfing that 1,720 foot tsunami wave
Cade - I can't see him leaving the Guardians so he will stay.
Did I miss anyone?

If everyone wants to make 505 CP characters, then that's fine with me.  As GM in a high powered game, I'm ok with that.  I just didn't want to slight the PCs that have been around a while (aka IM).  If this were the Ranger, she would be okay with it, as long as you followed instructions (Will 😛) and worked as a team, because her superiority to them is from her authority and responsibility for their well being.

However, it did seem a bit weird that a couple of teenagers would have the same starting CP as a character that's been in the field for a couple of years and amassed a lot of experience.  Some are understandable (like if one of the triplets [Project 7, 8 & 12] transferred from Gotham to Evergreen or if a character transfers from Ian's campaign to Evergreen); because, their creation and experience is already in the world's canon.

4. New team or Guardians - We need Mark to figure out what he would like to play first. It would be entirely conceivable that Tara would want to train and mentor a group new metas in using their abilities, especially after what she saw from Toxic Acres.  She would see it as altruistic, and she would likely keep it completely off the grid if possible.

5. Ok this one sounds like it is directed at me and Patrick.

Not just you two, but both of you have the most characters (by a lot) active in Evergreen.  I just wanted to slim down the team instead of making the roll call too massive.  Besides, the city wouldn't be able to pay for everyone and not everyone would fit in the office building.

I guess since I conceive every character as part of the team that can be activated at any moment, I wanted to slim that down, so we (and the world) knows exactly who the current Guardians are.  This is why I'm good with team A (the main team) and team B (the backup/secondary).  Both would be fully active, but you'd think the primary team would be able to handle larger threats than the secondary, and Team A may be out of the city more.

*YEAH!* Now that is set.

Just because your character has a higher power than experienced characters doesn't make them great in the field. They have to learn when to use their powers. Seasoned characters have played out their character and know how to do a great combo or such already - that is truly what makes them more advanced.
"My new character can do a fireball of 15d6 area effect of 10 hexes and he fires it at the villain standing next to the building"
"What do you mean the building filled with innocents is now falling and is on fire?"

character transfers from Ian's campaign to Evergreen
Oh god, that means my easter bunny is active in this world?

It would be entirely conceivable that Tara would want to train and mentor a group new metas in using their abilities
I'm laughing so hard at this. Tara was upset she had to run the Guardians while Cade did desk work - now more metas are going to be pushed on her. Maybe we might want to give a chance to Chris G it possibly leading?

she would likely keep it completely off the grid if possible
of course she will want to keep it off the grid she won't want to take the heat when things go south (and they always do with new characters) teehee.

Besides, the city wouldn't be able to pay for everyone and not everyone would fit in the office building.
So if we play freelance there will be 2 Guardians per player, as the freelance won't be part of the Guardians at all. If that's the case I want to keep Micah in Evergreen as well.

Ok everyone, so I have a question.

Are you going to work together to create a balanced team where you have a bit of overlap and all of the basics covered, or is this going to be the usual Complete Secrecy Until I'm At The Table character creation process?  : p

Just say'n.  Is Mark going to secondarily approve all submissions for "secrets"?  LOL!

I'll be playing out Project 7 aka Kane Powers.
Powers include - High strength and laser eyes (I'm not copying RR I had this planned out a looooong time ago).
If you think of Iron Maiden I'm pretty much the same as her - flying brick with strength derived from TK.
I don't have that whole rip and shred thing she has with her bare hands.

I really enjoy figuring out the characters in game but keeping a secret at this point is pointless.
Patrick is half angel half demon with different personalities.
I'm playing what I just said above.
Mark and Chris unknown at this point - so if you guys want to keep it secret it's up to just you two.
I'll build out Frank's character unless someone else wants to do it.

Actually one step from Superman - Superboy - new 52.  His powers came from TK.

"creation of the mysterious organization [Dr. Helix] N.O.W.H.E.R.E., which seeks to control the new generation of metahumans. "

"Superboy was depicted as a genetically-engineered metahuman clone of human origin designed by Project Cadmus as a duplicate and closest genetic equivalent of Superman"

replace Superboy with Project 7 and Project Cadmus with Dr Helix and Superman with Iron Maiden :)

BAM - instant character history :)

Are you asking about why Superboy got laser eyes or why Project 7 got them?
Superboy storyline is the TK generates an intense focused beam from his eyes - which we can say the same thing for Project 7 as how it is generated.
Project 7 isn't exactly a duplicate clone from Iron Maiden. Dr. Helix is pretty wacko with his designs and is always attempting to manipulate his projects into something better than what Splicer can design. The laser eyes just happened to be something that came out of his project.
Kane is considered to be a hybrid clone - just like Kid Splice.

Can I get the time period of when this campaign will start? Winter/Summer/Spring/Fall? Has any major events occurred in Evergreen since we last played or will we just start off exactly where we left off at?

I'm also curious on this point. Will we get XP for complications that arise?
Will we also be using hero tokens, if so in what capacity?

I thought we talked about this at your car after the game? 😋   I was thinking of starting right after the Pentagon incident.  I guess if you want to get rid of some characters, they could have died in DC and now there is a vacancy.

it's a good place, es[specially if you aren't a part of the Guardians prime.  or if you are joining the core team, then maybe you were recruited in DC.

When do you all want to start it?

Damn son, you already know this.  Nothing has changed since the last time we were here.  The latter suggestion ain't gonna happen, cause y'all are already whining about mismatched CP.  Imagine what would occur if complications arose for some but not others?

On the first point, if we are starting at 500+ CP, then it's 75 Complications.  If we drop to 400 CP (+Bonus), then I'm ok with 50 Complications.  We had 60 Complication points in Gotham and only 300 starting CP, and we had to have a distinct connection to the city, which limited some choices!  No soup for you! 😁

I know you where kind of hesitant about when your game would begin.
So July 19th - day after the whole Dr. Destroy incident?

I guess if you want to get rid of some characters, they could have died in DC and now there is a vacancy.
Up to you. Did anyone die from any of the other teams? Sentinel team was safe inside the Pentagon but who knows what happened to everyone else during this time. I'll leave that up to you.

When do you all want to start it?
I vote for right after the baseball game - Nov 1st.

Was gonna have a ton of complications just for this - end of each game collect my 20 CP points :). Guess it's back to just 75 points which I'm good with.

If we drop to 400 CP (+Bonus)
Noooooo
Sticking to the 505 :)

So what you are saying is within Evergreen city nothing has happened for almost a year? Just Guardians busting up low level gang members? No giant monster coming out of the ocean for it's baby?

Right after the Pentagon event works for me.

75 points of Complications? You bastard! Heh. Oooookay....

I'm considering a character who, among other powers, can steal memories from people with a touch (a very invasive form of telepathy--I get the memory/knowledge I want, but at the cost of the victim losing it). I'm assuming that would be a Transform attack. But what LEVEL of transform would it be? Cosmetic? Minor? Major? Severe?

I'm also thinking that Iron Maiden and Rose are now aware (or soon will be) that they are half-sisters. They met when Rose and Tara were both dispatched to deal with flying missiles (two bricks with supersonic flight?) Tara will probably think that Rose is another clone at first, but Rose has plenty of evidence her mother's pregnancy and her birth, but Doctor Asher (or someone else with the requisite skills) can show that they are half-siblings, and that they share a father--and it isn't Mr. Hancock....

We can start it after the baseball game, but I was thinking long term and the dance we will be doing with our respective campaign cities.  If we start Evergreen after the Dr Destroyer incident, that will give Evergreen three months of in-game play time before it catches up to Gotham.  If we play for a year IRL, that would make the Evergreen campaign last until summer/fall in-game time (possibly the spring, but likely a bit longer).  This would mean the Gotham campaign would then restart in time for the wedding, which would be a good segue back into that campaign for season 2 (if we continue it).

And that's my point; thanks John!  If we want CP to remain equal for everyone, a variable CP award system isn't conducent for that.  I'm ok with a variable system, so it's up to you all.  At the moment, we have an equity system, not a merit system.

No more monsters that you know of.  That was in season 1 😁.  I will have a segue as to what's been going on for the year in-game.  I just need time to create this stuff.  Had I known I'd be up to bat ahead of time, I'd have prepared a little in advance, but the secrecy bug the players seem to have struck again 😛.  Since it's literally Day 2 of being on notice, and now I'm getting full on character approval requests, I need a smidgen of time to get things a bit organized before spewing forth a full on historical timeline of Evergreen from the last session tot he current.  My stories aren't written in a day, ya know 😋... okay, maybe some where... 😎

That was set by Jason and the prime Evergreen heroes have that, so the newbies do too.  You could always buy them down.  Now if you don't mind a lower power game than 500... 😈

I'm considering a character who, among other powers, can steal memories from people with a touch (a very invasive form of telepathy--I get the memory/knowledge I want, but at the cost of the victim losing it). I'm assuming that would be a Transform attack. But what LEVEL of transform would it be? Cosmetic? Minor? Major? Severe?

I have no clue about transform, so I'll need to read it.  If the Ranger wanted to make someone blind (actually blind, not Flashed), it's a Major Transform, I think (sight to blindness).  So, if you are taking away knowledge that they've had ingrained in them for a long time (basic math, tie a shoelace, literacy) it would probably be major.  However if it's a name of a person they met at a party that one time, then it would probably be very minor (depending on the importance of the person to them).  If it's an esoteric or trivial thing to that person, then it's cosmetic.  It depends on the importance of the information on the person effected.

For me, it would be a major transform to remove the etiquette knowledge for saluting the flag, but for you, it's probably minor or less, since I would miss it and likely try hard to remember what I forgot when I encountered a situation that required it (which is more frequent that you might think).

Hancock....

This is great and I think John would agree (co-GMing).  You should write this up as a story, since you're actually great at that skill set and the meeting would both be interesting to watch and is basically a solo-player event. Although, it would be a fun coffee shop scene as they discover their sisterhood and learn more about each other.

That's what I was thinking--major transform. It would mostly be used to draw information from the bad guy (security codes, who he's working for, stuff like that). If I even do this character, I'm not sure. I'm in the "flailing around with too many choices" phase.

As a point of reference, it looks like Chris G. is making a skill monkey, so unless someone else wants the job, they are in a position to be the face of the team and the team leader if that job is required.

Can you buy it in stages?  Maybe in a multipower?  I'm okay with a VPP, too, it's just you need to keep track of it, as I will forget and then end up challenging it at some time.  Also, you can ask John how he made Cade, as that sounds similar to what drove Jason bananas. 😉

Chris - having a skill character is always useful. I can't wait to see what he is all about.

Mark - just melt the minds of anyone you steal memories from. So much easier that way :)
I do like the idea of how that would work. Just a suggestion but when you make the transform make it against mental defense instead of power defense.

Frank will be playing out his old character - Captain Davidson. She has a gun and is very strong. She will have difficulties with ridding in cars as she is really heavy (all that compressed metal and all). She also has a background of the military.

You can totally build a Transform to work against EGO instead of BODY, to target based on MCV, and to go against Mental Defense.  Link it to Telepathy at No Range and you're golden.  You could add a Limitation to the Transform that it takes an additional +X worth of Transformation to get deeper memories; it would probably be expensive.  Or put it in a Multipower, with a Minor for surface or below the surface, Major for deeper, and Severe for core.

Well, since the cat is out of the bag, this "steal memories" power is merely a subset of a "steal your soul" power. Skin to skin contact with the character for more than a couple of phases begins doing NND damage (defense is it must be skin-to-skin contact, and doesn't work versus metallic/rubbery/etc skin). If it's maintained it will kill the subject as the character absorbs their soul (and their powers -bwahahahaha). If it's maintained for only a few seconds, the character can simply grab whatever memories are desired.

Character has a multi-form to represent some powers already absorbed from previous victims...er, I mean opponents. I don't expect to actually use it to acquire more powers in game, but that's the idea. (I'm toying with the idea that this character is another product of Dr. Helix's experiments, who eventually escaped/was rescued from villainy.)

Ok, so a point of rule:  As with Gotham, the Characteristic Maxima chart is in effect.

What that means is "normals" cannot exceed these stats, and any stat beyond these maximums would need to have a reason attached (mutant ability, equipment, chemical imbalance, etc).

This was in effect for Evergreen previously, too.

So, let's see... the new Evergreen team will consist of:

A Flying Brick with Laser Eyes (John)
A Skill Monkey (Chris G)
A Demon/Angel Hybrid (Patrick)
A Robo-Soldier (Frank)
A Soul Eater (me)--a martial artist/blaster/other (depending on which poor dead bastard's powers I'm using)

Interesting team

Only be sure always to call it 'self defense'

As a second guideline for character generation, I don't want to reach Ian's "no holds barred" level of damage that characters can do.   I'm thinking the average would be about 14d6, with 16d6 being on the high end (Iron Maiden level).

Now, you are likely to face bad guys with this or higher damage, if needed to keep you in check.  However, I'm concerned about runaway damage stats; because, all I'm going to do is up the bad guys, then we have an arms race.

Remember as you build your characters that this is the same world you lived in last week!  Initially in Evergreen, you had 300 CP characters!  The average was about 12 Damage Classes, and that still holds for most of the bad guys (and certainly for the normals of EC).  When we get to 14 and 16 DC, we are moving to the outer edge of the Protectors, Champions, and Sentinels.

As such, I may have a Damage Class limit, should things spiral out of control too quickly.  I plan to stay within these levels for a while, so if you want your character to grow in damage, start around 12 DC, so you can get to 16!

If you want a super high power game, talk to Ian :P

Please let me know if I can answer any questions.

LOL, a poet.  Nice old school piano comedy, too!

Honestly, I find her eyes to be the most terrifying power in the Ranger's repertoire.  The eyes are the gateway to a person's soul, and the uniform color that appears as the power builds, effectively blotting out any chance to read her emotion and intention is bad, then the stream of death that lances out with an eerie precision and the strength to cut through steel and dense rock is simply terrifying.

When she was forced to shoot Erulim in the last adventure, I specifically had her verbally apologize as tears welled up (and were quickly vaporized) knowing the horrific visage she presented (and for the power that was about to be released).

You want shock and awe, laser eyes are the way to do it.

Well, everyone is on notice.  If you want a power with that damage magnitude, then it needs to basically be "the nuclear option".  It's going to be stupid expensive to buy and discharge and likely take a while to get it released.

Look at the most recent laser eyes in movies/tv shows.
You have Homelander with laser eyes that burns the womans face off until it breaches the backside of her skull.
In Brightburn you have him laser eyes his father right through the backside of his skull.

Laser eyes can be very nasty and evil.

just look at Radiant Ranger - attempting to attack her fiancé with her laser eyes.

Yeah, that's why she said what she said... it's scary.  I even mentioned this in the Gargoyle story when she was talking to her parents.  They were disturbed by the idea.  her Eye beams are a last ditch option, in her mind.  That's because we treat this stuff with a blase attitude, but if she unleashed that power in front of people she is trying to help, IRL, they would be more terrified of her than the armed penguins!

If you're playing someone on a par with Iron Maiden, why are you worrying about healing? It's very unlikely to come up.

I'm not entirely sure of all my character's powers yet, but I don't expect healing other people to be one of them.

I like Karelia. Well, the *name* no so much. But the character background and design is great. I foresee a lot of sparring between your character and mine, as I'm going to have martial arts skills and good stats as well.

She sounds like she's from the Noble family, of the Noble Causes comic. A whole family of celebrity superheros. Or the Furst Family from Astro City (likewise famous family of supers).

I keep looking at that 8d6 Energy RKA AP/Pen Turret that we fought last time in Evergreen.
I can take 1 shot from it then the next shot I'm dead (on average). Someone with a good OCV is going to need to block these attacks for us.
I remember Iron Maiden could take a few shots from these turrets to get a few starches. I just didn't want to be as insainly buff as her *yet* - a boy's gotta grow ya know :)

 For Karen -
Hunted: "Those guys in the yellow-and-green suits" LOL so funny!
Lots of magic skills/knowledge - this will come in very handy.
For her costume is it all black or brown or something?

Yeah, I'm aiming at a SPD 5 as well. I thought about variable SPD based on which power suite I'm using, but decided it would just cause too many headaches for everyone.

"Those guys in the green and yellow suits" -- yes, very funny.

She has a "boring" costume...but Distinctive Appearance that causes major reactions. What's up with that?

The less boring look comes through time.

She's the result of parenting gone wrong.  From the time she was very small, she was basically shaped by her parents into a superhero, except that her powers just kept not showing up.  Until she was eight years old, she thought everyone had a danger room in their house.  She picked her code name when she was 11, because she thought it sounded cool; it ended up being the feeling you get when you decide at age 11 that you want to be a veterinarian, but then realize at age 12 you can't stand blood, guts, or animal poop -- but your parents have already picked out which veterinary school you're going to and are picking out the wallpaper patterns for your practice.  It was "strongly implied" by her parents that you don't get to pick out a costume until you have powers, and to her mind she doesn't yet have powers.  She can't fly or throw energy blasts or create force fields or do all of the "cool" stuff that superheroes are "supposed" to do in her mind.  It didn't help matters that she basically was the butt of super powered pranks from the time she picked out her code name until, basically, the time she left home.

Uh, wow.  I guess she has a lot of issues.  Is it too late to change my character?  😆

Hey guys, just curious how do we want to begin the game? Do we want to each be doing our own things and eventually meet up together or do we want to jump right into being Guardians? I'm just trying to hash out my character storyline and this bit is causing me to go either one way or the other.
Vote -
A) We each do our own thing and meet up in Evergreen (somehow)
B) We start off as Guardians in Evergreen
C) Kill all humans
D) All of the above

Now I like the "A" option but I'm willing to go with whatever the group wants.
Now if we all do "A" it might be a good idea a few of us know each other ahead of time just to make Chris's life a bit easier.
Now if we go with "B" we can just be thrown into the team and no real background is needed for us to get to that point.

So what does everyone want?

I would prefer option A. I like the idea of forming a new group separate from the Guardians, and having the option to join afterwards.

Votes are in (4 out of 5) -
A - Chris, Patrick, Mark and me.

(I assume Mark is for A from the response).

My character has been in the city for 2 months.
My character does have a connection to Guardians which will be Iron Maiden (my character doesn't know her real ID)
My character has a Public ID and is very Public about who and what he does.
My character will tend to be impulsive about things.
My character is hunted by Dr. Helix
I'm toying with the idea about being enraged when losing a video game but I'm thinking of throwing that out.

These are the big flaws with my character I see that might cause strife within a group.
If you believe your character might have an issue with one of these let me know and I can work on my character some more.

Now does anyone have any type of crazy flaws like "Must kill all humans" or "Berserk" or psychological issues that will cause other characters to hate you?

Yes, I vote for A (we meet up in-game)

Not sure how long I've been in the city. My character is going to be hunted, possibly by Dr. Helix (who created me), possibly by the friends/lovers/allies of some of the supers I've killed. ("Have you ever killed anyone?" "Yes, but they were all bad.")
I won't have a Public ID, but no secret ID either. The general public won't know me from Adam, those in the know will know my reputation: that I've killed more people than most people have had hot meals (a vast exaggeration, but I've killed people), and that my go-to response to a problem is to punch it in the face.

Enraged when losing at video games? Seems rather a pointless complication (how often is it actually likely to come up? Unless you start punching anyone nearby when it happens....)

Casual killer - that is a huge one. Well my character doesn't have a code against killing but I'm still not going to want to see someone be killed just because they where in the wrong.

From the sound of it you will be gearing yourself to be a darker vigilante. If so my character is going to have to come to terms with this style - there might be some conflict here but I'll try not have it impact the group to much.
Now if anyone else has code against killing this will impact you and them a great deal.

As for video games - In real life I sometimes get so involved in video games I get frustrated. Almost all my games I play now are on my phone and me walking around,in the car, or just playing on the couch.
So this could potentially come up extremely often. As I don't see my character being the type that flies off the handle I'm not going to choose this.

Well, I'm not going to be a Casual Killer. (Not anymore, at least. But when you're raised to be a hammer, everything looks like a nail...) But I may have that rep still. And my character will still believe that the best defense is a good offense.

I think Karelia is going to have a problem with this.  That villain you canx'd in Des Moines?  Yeah, that was Karelia's first cousin, Sarah.  The one who never really picked on her about a lack of powers.  The family member she hung out with a family reunions (and left the party with to get drunk with some local college guys).  So... when she finds out... 😈

Plus, Karelia is a goody two shoes, so she is going to seriously balk unless the death was justified for some reason.  She might not turn you in, if you are up to the friends stage, but if you kill in the initial engagement, then it's possible.

BTW, what the hell is you character's name/description/background????

I agree, this would be a pointless thing.  However I can see it if he is addicted to video games, and not playing after a period of time will set him off (then everyone dies via the 16d6 RKA 😛).

Otherwise in combat,
Kane: "hold on... I spend Phase 5 playing a video game on my pone"
GM: "What?  A video game?  Okay."
Karelia: "What the *&^% are you doing?!?!?!"
<Kane fails to pass level 23 of Candy Crush>
Kane: <Phase 8> "AHHHH!!!! Hulk Smash!!!"
Karelia: "Oh, I see..."

First--"canx'd"? What is canx'd?

Second--what? Impossible! I would never! Unless Sarah was being bad, in which case, well, stuff happens.

I'll email you. Also, this is all only about 85-90% certain, other than the most basic outlines, until I finish working out the background.

Karen has villains and heroes in the family.  Still trying to figure out what family that is...

Therefore the likelihood of your character killing one of her relatives is better than none, if you two want to play that up.  Have a chat and see if you can turn it into something fun for the group.  Sort of like the Bink connection with Scotty and the team.

That's fine.  It makes sense that all of his creations show up in Evergreen, as they are all coming to Splicer for answers.

For complications there are levels of when they can occurs - such as being enraged while playing video games.
Uncommon - probably not going to occur in combat but an evil GM might be able to work it into combat with difficulty. This would be a good spot of being enraged while playing video games as it's very easy to setup in an out of combat situation.
Common - This is something that can occur in combat or out of combat. Things such as being enraged when villains threaten the lives of woman, someone wearing a solid red shirt etc...
Very Common - This is something that can occur quite often. This can also fall in conjunction with another complication. A good sample would be what Chris said above - Being addicted to video games (meaning they play often even in combat) and then being Enraged with losing a video games.
Now depending on how someone would setup enraged when playing video games I do not see as being pointless. It is all on how the character is setup.

For playing video games in the car - I only spin Pokestops from Pokémon (Ever see the bumper sticker saying I break for all pokestops - yup that's me). I'm not driving while playing in depth games.

Dr. Helix was already run by you Chris I thought? Or was that only Jason?

Somebody please tell the newbie how we started Season 1 of Evergreen City when I took over from Jason.

Then, tell him how we started Season 2 of Evergreen City with the new characters.

Can we get a re-cap Chris of what might be important from previous games that way Chris (G) is caught up?
I think season 1 started off with us hunting down mechinon (I'm sure I have the spelling wrong to his name).

Canx = Cancel.  We used it in the military.
Learn something new everyday.

My character is Hunted by the forces of Hell and is being watched by the forces of Heaven.
*sigh* I'll have Micah ready just in case.

She has a "boring" costume...but Distinctive Appearance that causes major reactions. What's up with that?
Those colors you have on clash. Me and Karelia will go shopping together to get rid of this complication 

😋

Ok, so since I need to answer my own request 🙄, here is what happened.

First, Jason games started with us all at the mall.  Yep, chill'in at the mall on a weekday afternoon (cause we really wanted to act like tweens during the summer or something), when these mechanical people creatures decided to kill all lifeforms.  The suburban equivalent of the bar, I guess.

So, when I started my campaign (aka Evergreen Season 1), it was jailbreak time!  Iron Maiden was at the University of the Northwest dedication for the new School of Magic and Mystic Arts and who would show up?  Dark Maiden!  (her arch nemesis)  A scrum ensues.

Next, City Hall was attacked by a couple of villains and a platoon of troops to capture the mayor.  Splicer and Kudzu responded, which turned into a bloodbath for poor Snowblind (and got the team in hot water).

This, however, was all a distraction for the main event: a jailbreak at the Henry Allman Penitentiary (aka The Slammer).  ShadowWing Thunderbolt responded to this, where all of the metas in custody were released!

Thus, I had the heroes engaged in three different places across the city, so one bad guy (The Bear) could escape!  It was pretty fun.

For Season 2 (with all new characters, aka Guardians B Team), the adventure started with the team putting an add in the paper for new recruits.  About 300-400 showed up to apply & try out!  The Guardians that didn't switch characters (The Occultist and Iron Maiden) held interviews (actual interview panels) and had the finalists demonstrate their abilities.  It was comedic and fun!

Now for Season 3, what's going to happen on this massive of a scale?  We'll see... 😉

For Season 2 (with all new characters, aka Guardians B Team), the adventure started with the team putting an add in the paper for new recruits.  About 300-400 showed up to apply & try out!
This was an epic scene!  My character was one of the new ones (of course) and I did a write up for it. Probably my best write up I've ever written. This was Danny (aka Zero°) applying for being in the Guardians -
(imagine him talking like Bill & Ted or Crush from Finding Nemo)

Danny walks into the meeting room wearing board shorts, a t-shirt, hoodie and sandals. The Occultist, Shadow Wing and Quick Wit are sitting around the table within the room. Danny has been sleeping on the couch in the receptionist room since this morning not wanting to be late for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

“Have a seat” the Occultist says “and tell us why you are here.”

“Well first off let me tell you like how totally sweet it is for me be in the presence of such righteous dudes” Danny sits down and continues “I’m here to be part of the compadres” he waves his hand at the 3 sitting across from him.

Shadow Wing picks up the file in front of him “Mr. Kass, you file says you have never had a job, how have you been supporting yourself?” he looks over at him suspiciously.

“Whoa dude, Mr. Kass is my father, it’s like Danny or if we go by hero names call me Zero degree, the degree with the little dot at the top (Zero°)” he holds up his hand to show an O with his fingers “and to answer the question I am a professional of the most excellent sport – snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding, and wind surfing. I have won the grand prize of the most mounmentious Extreme Sports Game from Red Bull just this winter for snowboarding.”

Quick Wit blurs a bit and a coffee is now in his hand “What can you do for the Guardians, what type of powers do you have?”

Danny leans back in his chair “Well my blurry dude I’m like good at chilling things down” he holds up his hand again and it starts to glow white.

“Not here” The Occultist stands up and walks over to the glowing door in the back of the room. “Please step through the door and you can show us there”.

The groups steps through to an abandoned warehouse filled with blast marks on the walls, holes dug through the concreate floor, some mannequins piled over in the corner that have all been ripped apart along with other destruction forces that are seen through the building.

“Whoa, you dudes know how to party”

Quick Wit moves over to the side “Danny, show us what you can do to help us, we are on a time table here” as he jitters in the same spot looking to leave.

“Chillax blurry dude I’m getting to that” He points his glowing white hand at the opposite end where the pile of mannequins lay and looks away. A large ice wall appears. “Whoa! You see that?” Danny looks back at what he just did. “Tell me that isn’t totally awesome?”

“Well you obviously can protect yourself” Shadow Wings says “but can you do anything else?”

“Ok dude, let’s say we want pizza and like you go to the store to buy it for us but dude you get lost. You call your bro” Danny slaps his chest “and say bro I’m lost can you help? I would be like dude I can find you.”

“You can find people or track them?” The Occultist asks.

“Exactly dude.”

“Danny please step through the door again wait 2 minutes and come back and find me” Shadow Wing says.

Danny walks through the door and comes back 2 minutes later holding a small can of peanuts. “Dudes you would never believe what I found on top of your mini fridge.” He holds out the peanuts to the group while munching on one of them.

“Please find Shadow Wing Danny” the Occultist nodes towards the warehouse.

“Right, he bought the pizza and can’t find us now, I’m on it dude.” Danny looks down at the ground and seems to follow foot prints that aren’t there. Then he stops and looks further up ahead “Whoa dude, that dude can jump”. He continues on then stops again and munches on another peanut.

“Pizza delivery has arrived dudes” and he points up at a rafter in the ceiling.

Shadow Wings jumps down making a 3-point hero landing. “How did you track me down?”

“Well dude, I just followed your steps. Like each step caused heat to move away from the cold floor. I just followed the change in temperature.” Danny walks over to Shadow Wing and holds out his fist towards him. Shadow Wing pauses then holds out his fist. Danny bumps his fist with his “and bam I found you” he opens up his hand to make it look like an explosion.

“Your powers seem to check out, can I attempt to destroy the ice wall” Shadow Wing pulls out his staff.

“Have at it dude.”

Shadow Wing attacks the wall with his staff but does no damage. He then moves back and throws a boomerang at it that explodes but still the wall has no damage.

“Can you remove the ice wall Danny?” The Occultist asks.

“Nah dude, that’s there until it gets some serious beach time.”

“We need to get back as our time is up” Quick Wit goes through the door and everyone else follows.

“It was nice meeting you Danny. We will be in contact with you - if you have been chosen to train with The Guardians” The Occultist holds out his hand to shake Danny’s hand. Danny holds out his fist.

“Fist bump it is” The Occultist closes his hand to make a fist, bumps fist with him and both exploded their hands.

“Sweet” and Danny walks out the meeting door.

My character theme song -

You'll wind up like the wreck you hide behind that mask you use
And did you think this fool could never win
Well look at me, I'm coming back again
Don't you know I'm still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid

This will be my taunt to get villains attention after they attack -
"I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah"

Cool. Now I have to figure out my character's musical theme. Maybe this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY0WxgSXdEE

I've also decided how to make my big entrances--teleport as a lightning bolt. The classic "superhero landing" except there's a bolt of lightning out of the sky, and then Belladonna is standing there ready to kick ass and take names.

Did we decide when the game is starting? Right after the Pentagon fight, or after the baseball game in September?

Also, unrelated but cool video I found: it's from a playlist of techno music I've been listening to. Video of longboarders blazing along at ridiculous speeds down long, long mountain roads, passing the camera back and forth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLvv-XmjTdU&list=RD4PZ4i7wZjtU&index=12

I'm pretty sure it was right after the Pentagon attack - July sometime. Chris would need to confirm because I can't find the email he said that to me on.
The baseball game is at the end of October, it fell right on Halloween night - promotion to sell super hero outfits at the game 
I think a lightning entrance would be spectacular! Everyone in the city will know you have arrived.

the skateboarding down the mountain is pretty cool - at points that guy must feel like he's flying.
If only there where mountains in Florida I would have been doing this on rollerblades when I was younger - I only got to do this going down 7 story parking garages (with rent-a-cops chasing me out)

Lightning strikes every time she moves
And everybody's watching her

On this great day of Independence, we gather to honor the birth of our nation and all for which it stands.  It would have been difficult for the citizens of the thirteen colonies to fathom the true scope and magnitude of the experiment for which they undertook and the result of their great labors.  Over these many years, America has risen to become a true beacon of light for the world, an ideal and aspiration as much as a plot of land where people live.

Evergreen City was founded on this great American spirit, too.  Pioneers risked everything for a chance at freedom and growth by traveling westward across the Great Plains on the Oregon Trail in the 19th Century.  These intrepid adventurers first settled the delta and coast we now know as our fair city, and it has grown in magnificence to the great metropolis it is today.

Over the last three years, we have faced our own hardships, and we have persevered into a time of relative peace and wealth across our city.  This is in no small part due to the heroic actions of the city’s own super team.

Just two years ago, we formed what would become a world renowned super hero team, The Guardians of Evergreen City.  During that first year, they grew in unimaginable ways as the city fell under siege by elements focused on turning Evergreen into a hive of super-human villainy.  The team expanded rapidly to meet the increasing challenges, and with your help and that of the Evergreen City Police Department, we met those challenges head on to beat back the forces of evil.  The effort paid off.

Over the last year, criminal activity has been reduced 58%, with a reduction in meta crime of over 80%.  This is an astounding figure and is in no small part due to the efforts of the Guardians. In fact, crime requiring the attention of the super team has dropped so low, many of the members have graciously volunteered their time and energy to securing the peace and dignity of other humanitarian efforts across the country and the globe.  It is due to this that I wanted to take a moment on this auspicious day to announce several changes to the Guardian program.

The need for a large contingent on the Guardians has dwindled, and the city must be flexible to account for this shift in activity.  As such, the Guardians program will now be organized into three tiers. The first tier will be considered the Active Component. It will consist of Iron Maiden, who will continue to patrol the city and assist the citizens of Evergreen; Brenda Davidson, who will be assisting the ECPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics unit ramp up their abilities and training to better face meta threats, as well as patrolling the streets of Evergreen; and Cade Connor, who will act as the overall Leader of the Guardians and the administrative liaison between the team and my office.  This group will remain in a full-time paid status.

The second component will be an Active Reserve group consisting of Blacklight, The Occultist, and Splicer.  Each of these team members have other activities that occupy their attention; however, they will remain in Evergreen City and are on-call at a moment’s notice as required.  They have also agreed to conduct patrols on a part-time basis, so you are likely to see them around.

This means there are six Guardians, four of which were founding members, ready to face any threat to the city that is outside of the scope of the police and fire departments.

The remainder of the Guardians are being placed in an Inactive Reserve status.  This is because they have other projects and requirements on their time that keep them away from the city.  These members are welcome to rejoin the project at anytime, and we are extremely grateful for their contributions to our great city.  These changes will be effective tomorrow, July 5th.

It is wonderful to spend this day of celebration with you and your loved ones as we celebrate the birth of our great nation and reflect on the wonders that have been accomplished over the past 243 years.  God Bless the city of Evergreen.

How about this for your theme, John? "I get knocked down but I get up again!"

I'm looking forward to the relaunch of Evergreen City. I've finally sent Chris my character design.

Alice Jordan, aka BELLADONNA. She has a deadly touch (like Rogue from the X-Men, only worse) and electrical powers (among others). Tends to make her big entrance to a fight by arriving in a bolt of lightning. Has a reputation as a killer (she pissed off her former government handlers, who made sure the whole world knows her rep thru a coordinated campaign in the papers, and on tv/internet/blogs--she'd call it a smear campaign except, well, it's all technically true), though she's trying to live it down.

She's another of Dr. Helix's creations, though she's not hunted by him (unless Chris decides to do it anyhow)

What!? Evergreen city doesn't need 20 or more 500 point characters running around it's city anymore?

New campaign add -
"Help Evergreen City become great again. If you believe you can stand up to the Guardians as a villain come to our city, run amuck in our malls, rob from our banks, and hold up hostages."

I really thought about this when thinking of a theme song for Kane but this one is more designed for Cade.  It's about him drinking and still being able to get up again hehe. Still an amazing song.

Has a reputation as a killer

I hope you will be wearing a mask so no one knows of this bad rep.

It's not a reputation for *murder*, mind you. They were all legal. Self-defense, defense of others, etc. But superheroes aren't supposed to kill people, and well...

Government: Belladonna is a killer!
Belladonna: What? I was working for YOU when that happened! I didn't do anything illegal!
Government: That's...technically true. And that's why you're an EX-employee.
Belladonna: You bastards!
Government: See? That temper is what makes you unsuitable for government service!
Belladonna: What!? You-- <mutters> I'll show *you* unsuitable!
Government: What?
Belladonna: Never mind.

As for back-up characters: no problem. I'll just bring in my rougher, tougher twin....

Don't worry about Cade.  The actual Guardians are background not actually engaged.  I'll use them like I do the police, and at most, you all will simply role play them if required (i.e. the Guardians are atytacking the giant whatever on the other side of town and another one just appeared here.  Oh no!  Who can save us!?

Session 1 Epilogue (7/19/2019 in game):

In the initial session of Season 3, Evergreen City was invaded by a large contingent of VIPER forces, both ground and air, with the seeming goal of revenge for their failed plot a year ago.  The incident with Dr. Destroyer and malfunctions within the US Military provided the opportunity Dr. Paraeus was looking for. As the forces of VIPER descended on the city, Kane, Karelia, and Belladonna found themselves converging on City Hall, while Luke was at the airport, having just arrived from a trip.  The three heroes fought several ground troops and four Mark III robots, defeating these foes, while Luke managed to take out several tanks and stealthily get a situational report on the hostages at the airport.

Upon defeating the forces in the lobby, the three active robots moved into the Mayor’s office.  Kane and Belladonna heard a loud explosion coming from the room, and immediately entered to find the last robot fleeing through a large hole in the side of the building with the Mayor, who was wrapped in a net.  The two heroes moved quickly to the opening to see Dr. Pareus and the bots flying Eastward.

Suddenly, a disheveled young woman emerges from a dark corner of the room calling for them.  “You’ve got to help us,” she says to Kane and Belladonna. “VIPER is planning to destroy the city’s infrastructure!”  After a little bit of questioning the frantic woman, they learn that VIPR plans to destroy the city’s electricity generation plant and the water purification plant using explosives.  “You’ve got to stop them!” she pleads.

At the same time, Karelia watched as two VIPER Cycles converge on the office building and crashed tank.  “We need to hurry. The charges are set and the telecom station is rigged to blow soon,” one agent said as he dismounted.  “We also have the evac order, so we need to get these tankers out and get to the rendezvous point,” said the other. The two agents park outside, grab their rifles and enter the large hole made by the tank.  Yelling instructions and firing shots harmlessly into the air to punctuate their instructions, they make their way to the damaged tank.

Meanwhile at the airport, Luke Croy was stealthily walking around the fringes of the main terminal, listen for details as to what the VIPER agents were up to.  “Are the charges set,” one agent asked another, who just entered the space.

“Yes, the tower and underground ATC are set to blow.  We have been issued our evac orders.” Tapping a comm unit on his arm, he said, “All agents, Order Omega two.  Fall back to egress point. For immediate departure.” In reaction, the agents covering the hostages began peeling out of the area in a quick but orderly covered retreat.

Karelia stealthily follows them in.  Moments later, she drags _four_ unconscious VIPER agents outside.  She calls 911:  "This is Karelia... no, not like Star Wars -- never mind that.  I've got four unconscious VIPER agents at <address>.  They were saying something about explosives at the telecom station."  She pauses a moment.  "Your *job*, that's what I expect you to do."  She hangs up.  She quickly secures the agents' weapons inside the tank, then zip ties their hands behind their backs and leaves them face down on the sidewalk.   Grabbing one of the cycles, she zooms off.  She heads back toward City Hall, at least until she can get eyes on VIPER assets, in which case she follows them.

Ok kiddos,

In doing a bit of maniacal plotting and researching the history of our fair city, I turned to a couple of stories I wrote to help remember a few points.  In the group, was my second RPG story.  It is date stamped as 9/5/2016, so a while ago, and was when Jason still GM'd the group.

If you can bear to read this short four pager, it has a couple of interesting details in it (and a walk down memory lane).  Maybe a couple of these people will show up again soon?  Anyway, see if you can find the Easter Egg from the early days of our group as we struggled to form the team.

The Matching Badge Number

John Richardson sat at his crowded desk in the Evergreen Tribune News Agency building.  Pouring over a stack of papers and tapping on an open laptop, the newest reporter was writing an editorial regarding the Mayor’s introduction of the city’s new super team and the impact on the culture of Millennials.

“Hey John!” a voice bellowed from halfway across the bustling space.  Turning, the young reporter saw his colleague approaching at a rapid pace waiving a small stack of paper.  “More data mining, Jack?” he asked with feign excitement.  “Sort of”, Jack started, “and you owe me lunch for this one.”  Jack handed his desk mate the stack and said, “This is a list of the most recent graduating class for the ECPD Academy.  You are going to find the name highlighted at the top of page two interesting.”  John took the stack, which actually contained the name, badge numbers, and precinct assignments for all officers in the Evergreen Police Department, with the newest officers listed first.  “You’re welcome,” Jack finished, stood, and walked away.

John quickly turned to the second page, and smiled with a mix of remembering the past and a man hitting a home run.  Highlighted was a name he remembered well.

Kaltnacht, Kristen            6867       Precinct 3, Novatown

“So, she joined the police, huh,” he said softly to himself. “Maybe she’ll be of some help.”  As the newest reporter in the news agency, John Richardson’s sole focus was to make a name for himself.  Dreams of Pulitzers danced in his head, and he felt reporting on the metahumans, both supers and Novas, plaguing Evergreen City would be the key to his goal.  Unfortunately, his beat was the life and times of EC’s millennials.  The “Supers” beat was assigned to others, but if he could just find that one thing to make him valuable to the metahuman desk…

John decided to peruse the rest of the list.  Most of it was boring with lists of pending retirements, officer reorganizations, and the rest of the graduating academy class.  None of which interested him.  After almost an hour, he managed to make it to page 21, and a huge smile broke across his face.  Buried deep within the long list were a few new lines.

Connor, Cade                     6891     Sentinels HQ

Hemmet, Raymond            6892      Sentinels HQ

Quasar                              6893     Sentinels HQ

Blacklight                          6867     Sentinels HQ

Iron Maiden                       6894     Sentinels HQ

Coldspark                         6895     Sentinels HQ

“Interesting,” he again said softly to himself.  “This must be the supe…”  His voice trailed off as his eyes faded back to the center of the list. “Blacklight.  Where have I seen…” he set that page on his desk and quickly rifled through the previous pages, his search coming to rest on the highlighted name on page two.  A wicked grin filled his handsome features. “I guess I need to look up my ex.”

.           .           .           .

It was late morning, and Kristen was enjoying her time off from both jobs.  The cloudy mid-April day was crisp, as winter fought to remain relevant in the face of spring.  Dressed in a green knit long sleeve top and jeans that were tucked into her brown boots, a brown light jacket, and small matching purse, belt, and other accessories, she walked briskly along the downtown sidewalk smiling at people she passed.  The day was great, and Kristen was happily heading for one of her favorite resale shops.

She turned the corner and saw a small group of people heading toward her.  They just cleared an intersection and began to disperse.  Her new police training mingled with her natural urban instincts to scan the people in the group to be sure things were safe.  Satisfied, she continued her jaunt and began to look more deeply at the faces in the crowd.  Her view hopped from one to the other until she landed on one she recognized.  A swell of excitement flashed over her, immediately replaced by a deep sadness.  The song that was flowing around her, the Go-Go’s Head Over Heals, faded and was softly replaced by Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings as her smile faded.

John had just exited the Tribune News Agency building and crossed the street, stepping lively in an attempt to break away from the pack.  He had a mission, and wanted to get started right away.  Looking up, he scanned the horizon noticing the staggered group of people moving toward him.  He couldn’t believe his luck.  John smiled wide when his gaze locked on the face of the person he was looking for. ‘There she is!’ he thought to himself.  “Kristen!” he called out waiving his right arm and moving to intercept his former girlfriend.

John made his way toward Kristen, and the two stopped when they came within an arm’s length of each other.  “Hey Kris,” John said with a charming smile on his face. “Nice to see you again.”

“Hi John,” Kristen replied shifting her stance and feigning a warm smile.

“So, how are you doing?” he asked with genuine concern.

“I’m fine,” she replied.  “How is the new job?”

“It’s pretty good.  In fact, I stumbled across some information you might find interesting, and I was hoping to find you.”

Kristen paused for a long moment to measure the honesty behind the statement and his charming smile.  “Ok,” she replied.

“Let’s sit and talk for a bit,” he said in a soft tone, gesturing to an “Evergreen’s Best” coffee shop across the street.

The two crossed the street making small talk as they entered the café.  Kristen’s tension began to ease a bit and her mood felt marginally better as they ordered their brew.  The two chose a small table near the window and sat down.

“How is Stephan,” John asked.

“He’s fine,” Kristen answered. “He has his sights set on a girl named Jessica.  They’re both in tenth grade this year.  Puppy love.”  She paused at the last bit, feeling the love she once had for the man before her.

“Congrats on your new job,” John said with sincere pride.

“Thanks,” she replied, a smile forming on her lips.  “It is pretty enlightening and gives me purpose.”

“I hear you are in Novatown. Be careful out there.  The Novas can be a little mean and dangerous, and the non-metas can be just as harmful,” he said, the statement holding a double meaning.  While his tone was laced with true concern, he also paused to gauge her reaction to the comment.  John took a sip of coffee and waited the response.

Kristen’s demeanor brightened a bit, but the Adagio continued to quietly play.  She also took a sip of coffee before replying. “I’ll be alright.  I have been partnered with an old veteran that knows his way around.  Hopefully, I can help bridge the gap between the Novas and the rest of the city.”

“Yeah, and how would you do that,” he asked with a glint of slyness in his eye.

Kristen recognized that look, even though it came and went in a flash.  Stiffening, she replied, “as a police officer, I hope to bring justice to those who feel betrayed by the system.  Also, I can also help those with prejudice shed their irrational fears by showing them there isn’t much to fear.”  She took another sip of her latte.

“About that,” John began, “there was a murder at a hotel near the university the other night.  The victim, Dr. Frederico Esposito, was a scientist from Hudson City, in town to speak at this weekend’s TED Talk.  Word in the bull pen is that the perp may be a metahuman or belong to some related agency, given the nature of his research.  Do you think the new superhero team could have been behind it?”

Kristen became angry at the accusation, and her face betrayed her feelings, as did her music, the room suddenly filling with the opening chords from Phantom of the Opera.  At the same time, she leaned forward, locked John’s gaze, and with a vehement fire she whispered loudly, “Certainly not!!  The Sentinels are dedicated to helping people and protecting life, NOT killing innocents!”  Just then, she caught herself, sat back in her chair, took a deep breath and regained her composure.

The music in the room quickly shifted to Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata at a barely audible volume.  The café patrons and staff looked around confused by the sudden outburst of music and abrupt silence.  John just smiled deeply, still staring into Kristen’s eyes.

“I have something else,” he said thinking he should press the advantage he acquired.  “A colleague of mine obtained a current list of officer names and badge numbers.”  He paused to reach into his coat pocket, pulling out two pieces of paper, the highlighted one and the other with the super team listed.  Laying the papers on the table he said, “this one is your badge number 6867, and the other lists the badges for the city’s new protectors.”

Kristen looked at the paper as he set them in front of her and swallowed hard.  Her brow furrowed in concern, as the next question was evident.

John leaned in and lowered his voice to ask, “the badge for you and this Blacklight character seem to match.  Do you know who this is or why they would be the same?”  Kristen looked up at him with great sadness and a weight on her soul she had only felt a few times before.

In an instant, several thoughts flashed through her mind.  What if she was outed?  What would happen to her brother, her family, her friends?  Would they be in grave danger within a blink of an eye?  Would some supervillain, or worse, the haters of Evergreen City seek to make an example of them and hold them accountable for her actions?  What would life be like if everyone knew?  How would her friends react?  And her new partner?  Would John be able to determine the identity of the others on the team?

The pleading look in her normally joyous deep blue eyes told the reporter everything he needed to know.  His lips clenched tightly, and he nodded in pity… and love.  John picked up the papers, neatly folded them, and replaced them to their pocket.

He whispered reassuringly, “it’s ok.  I won’t ask again.”  Standing, he moved beside her chair, kissed her on the top of her head, and moved toward the door.  He found the line again, a line he knew he should not cross a second time, and despite his ambition, he would leave the question unanswered… for the moment.

Here is a little background on Novas, as a reminder:

Novas spend their time just like any other person living in a racially-segregated ghetto -- some of them have jobs, some live on the dole, some fall into lives of crime or hooliganism due to feelings of ostracism or the lure of easy money.  There's efforts on the parts of non-profit groups and the local government to better integrate them into the mainstream of society, but there's a lot of prejudice and bigotry to overcome -- some people feel inadequate or threatened by the general physical superiority of the Novas, and some fear their alleged propensity for violence.  And now that the first Novas are old enough to have children of their own, and those children are reaching their teen or adult years, we're seeing a whole generations who have known nothing but this segregated life, stewing in the resentment others of their kind and growing up resenting the baseline humans for keeping Novas down.

Keep in mind that there are also Novas who live outside of Novatown -- a Nova could be your bank teller, or the bouncer at the local club, or the new boyfriend/girlfriend your DNPC brings home for dinner to meet everyone.  But they face a lot of the same problems that other minorities have historically faced when they were the first to succeed in a society that looks down on them -- people are generally suspicious of them, there's whisperings behind their back about how they only achieved their success due to affirmative action or the like, their children being denied access to certain schools due to fears of insurance liability or pressure from parents' groups, and so on.

Was interesting yesterday to see direction change in the game.
"Yup Evergreen city is all full up with super heroes. We aren't hiring right now but fill out these forms"
*Oh by the way there are other super hero teams in Evergreen that are trying to also do super stuff beside the Guardians.*
Belladonna "Screw them, lets form another team in Evergreen"
Kane "Why do we need to make a team here? We can go anywhere."
Karelia "Let's go to Seattle."
Luke "What type of sandwich is this again?"
Belladonna "Hawaii sounds nice"
Kane "Are you going to finish that sandwich Luke?"
Karelia "Seattle?"
Kane "A nice beach sounds good, Hawaii or maybe south Florida?"
Luke "I'm good anywhere"
Belladonna "A beach town in Florida or Hawaii works."
Kane "Why do they put so many onions in this sandwich?"
Karelia "I hear Seattle is nice"
Kane "lets take a vote to our new city, I'm for South Florida"
Belladonna "South Florida"
Luke "Sure"
Karelia mumbles under her breath "Seattle"

Just as the characters are getting up from the table after this discussion Capt. Davidson calls Luke "I have an assignment for South Florida and need a group, want to go?"
Luke "KANE TURN OFF YOUR PHONE!"

Just thought I would write up the defining talk of our characters taking a new direction.
