Dear Champions,

Who is leading this initiative and what are the modalities (those of
you on ground zero should form a committe and circulate its
composition)? As a proud and thankful Eagle (who is guilty of flying
too far away from the nest), you can count me in. Once the framework
is set, share the details and I'll be pleased to contribute my 2
cents.

Dumisani and Vilipo are bankers. Can you guys facilitate the opening
of a Bank Account where we can wire some Kwayeras? By the way, did I
see Dunstain Mwaungulu and Dr. Kaonga on this list? I'm forwarding
this to them (apologies ba Judge and Dr. K for cross posting if you
got this thread already). Also I think the call could be extended to
other well-wishers who may not have graced the corridors of the School
of Champions. Why not?

Regards,

Patrick

Thanks for the mail Dan. We really need to do something however
little it can be. As suggested the starting point is to resuscitate
the Old Boys structure and we will take it up from there. Suggestions
on dates as to when we can meet i.e. those based in Blantyre?

The photos flooded me with nostalgic memories about that great
place...

Subject: WE NEED TO GO BACK TO BWIBA - CHAMINADE SECONDARY SCHOOL
NEEDS YOU!

Gentlemen,

You are all recipients of this email because at one point or the other
we have passed through the corridors of Chaminade Secondary School and
as such we are members of the Alumni of the school. I was in Karonga 3
weeks ago and I felt sorry to see the state of this great school. It
now lies desolate in the midst of what remains of the late Brother
George Dury’s forest. The hostels are in a bad shape – you wouldn’t
believe but the same old spring beds that looked old when I went there
in 1987 are still being used today and most of them require “re-
stringing”. You do need to see your old hostels – Kenyatta, Kaunda,
Kamuzu, Brother Benard, Chilembwe, Dunduzu and Brother Emmanuel. The
toilets and showers and “ma sink” all need some attention even if it
means a good scrub, but they lack appropriate detergents. The dining
room is in a sorry state and the present headmaster told me it got so
bad that students were taking their meals from the floor. I wouldn’t
be too surprised if they were still using the same old metal basins as
food dishes.

The class rooms are a little bit better, but the students are still
using the same old desks most of us left 20+ years ago. Looking at the
giant St. Joseph’s hall, the chapel and the library today, I was
deeply moved by the sorry state of the Mighty CHAMINADE SEONDARY
SCHOOL – The school of Champions! It would appear as Eagles, we have
flown too far away from our nest and I think it is time we did
something about it. It occurred to me that the list of the school’s
wishes may appear frightening at first sight, but we can do something
that BIG by each one of us sacrificing a little something
individually. I am aware there is supposed to be an Alumni Association
(the Old Boys) which has been very quiet since the 40th Anniversary
celebrations event in 2003. We do need to resuscitate this in earnest
and make sure it is properly re-constituted so that it can be
effective. Soon it will be 50 years of Chaminade’s existence in 2012
and it would be a great idea to try to restore the lost glory of the
school.

Yesterday, we were in Kasungu to witness a donation of books and 100
mattresses by National Bank of Malawi to Kasungu Secondary School
worth MWK1 million. I was encouraged that even with that sum the
volume of materials donated was good enough to give the school a big
push! It made think that as sons of this great school, if we got
ourselves organized and contributed something, we could do something
even 10 times over this and imagine what it could do BOX 100, KARONGA!

I decide to author this email so that we could get together and try
something! I know some of you are in countries far away from home, but
there are many of us in the country that could make this a reality.
Please pass this email to other Eagles whose email addresses I do not
have, so that the momentum gathers in earnest. Meanwhile, I attach
some of the pictures of the school today!

Let’s keep the fire burning and we need to ACT NOW!

Thanks and regards,
