The Metcalfe County Kentucky Proud Farmer’s Market received a Healthy Communities Grant to help to make locally grown fruits and veggies available to SNAP participants.  Local fruit and vegetable producers and gardeners have a chance to get a piece of this grant through vending at our Farmer’s Market this season.  This grant will provide participating producers/gardeners with the opportunity for them to apply for and obtain at no cost to them, an I – phone with the card swipe attachment and funds a free one year contract, to allow Farmer’s Market vendors to accept the SNAP debit benefits as payment for their produce.

THE METCALFE COUNTY KENTUCKY PROUD FARMERS MARKET IS SEEKING RELIABLE GARDENERS AND LOCAL FRUIT AND VEGETABLE PRODUCERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FARMERS MARKET THIS YEAR.

We are considering BIG changes to make it more accessible: possible location changes, possible “travelling” Farmer’s market that sets up at the Food Commodities distribution at Bowling Park once a month and potentially at the City Park during summer baseball game nights.  We are also considering winter market times to benefit our local high tunnel producers, if they want to participate.  Do you have any suggestions for bringing the Market to the People?  Contact Lynn Blankenship at the Extension office at 270-432-3561!

THE 2014 FARMER’S MARKET ORGANIZATIONAL AND PLANNING MEETING WILL BE HELD AT THE METCALFE COUNTY EXTENSION OFFICE ON FRIDAY MARCH 21 AT 4:30 P.M. This will be the ONLY opportunity for interested producers to apply to be able to accept the Farmers Market vouchers for the WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition voucher programs, to complete the application for the debit machines and to provide input to potential changes to increase the customer base for farmer’s participating in the Metcalfe County Farmers Market, this season.

Thanks to additional funding from the grant that we received, we will increase the advertisement of the Farmer’s Market this year and will be conducting more recipe testing and sampling events.  We have local folks that want to shop at the Farmers Market; we just need local Farmers to participate!
