Subject: Toyota Tour at Georgetown

Metcalfe County High School students experienced a special treat last
Thursday, February 13th, 2014 on a tour of Toyota in Georgetown, KY. 26 MCHS
students were accompanied by Eric Sexton, Cathy Nunn and Joe Gerughty on a
tour of the plant. Students were welcomed at the visitor's center and given
a brief informational session about the history of Toyota and how it arrived
in Georgetown. Students were then split into 2 groups and placed on tram
rides through the entire 7.5 million square foot facility. While cameras
were not allowed inside the plant, students could visually see the making of
the Toyota Camry from metal to paint. The tour also stressed Toyota's core
principles of customer first, people are the most valuable resources, focus
on the workplace and the Kaizen philosophy. After the tour students and
staff had the opportunity to meet with different employees and sit in a few
of the showroom vehicles in the visitor's center. The average hourly wage at
Toyota is $27/hr. and Toyota employs over 7500 people daily, excluding
vendors. MCHS students were able to see many different types of careers all
at one stop. This trip was made possible through a CCR-Extended School
Improvement Grant in cooperation with Metcalfe County Schools, Family
Resource and GRREC's Race to the Top Grant.
