Jon is a writer from California and now floats somewhere on an island in the Mediterranean. He thinks most issues can be solved by petting a good dog, and he spends plenty of time doing so. Time not spent at his desk is probably spent making art or entertaining humans or other animals.

The skin also tends to become drier and thinner, making it more difficult to maintain its form. As the skin becomes less resilient and full, it becomes more vulnerable to gravity and slowly begins to sag.

Most recommended exercises should be done one after another to ensure the facial muscles are worked evenly. People should hold each exercise for 5 to 20 seconds before releasing. Each exercise can be repeated 8 to 12 times, several times daily.

Jowls are usually harmless and do not require medical attention. But for some people, having severe or very noticeable jowls makes them feel uncomfortable, or causes them anxiety and lowers their self-confidence.

Fillers are compounds that are injected into the cheeks to fill in the places where fat has been lost from the skin. Lifting the cheeks also naturally lifts the skin around the jawline and corners of the mouth.

During most neck lifts, a surgeon will make a cut along the side of the face and under the chin, then reposition and sculpt fat and tissues in the jaw and cheek. They will also cut away some excess skin and tighten some of the surrounding muscles.

Neck lifts are widely considered the most effective treatment for jowls, but the surgery has a long recovery time and carries the most significant risk of complications. The most common complications are scarring and infection.

Ultherapy involves the use of ultrasound therapy to stimulate the long-term production of collagen in the deep layers of the skin. Research has shown that this form of therapy provides effective facial rejuvenation through the tightening and lifting of loose skin.

Ultherapy only requires one session, and people can usually return to their everyday activities immediately after the procedure. Most people notice a continual improvement in skin tightness and firmness several months after treatment.

Less invasive alternatives are becoming more popular, as well. These include acupuncture, facial massage, and facial yoga. Regularly performing facial exercises may also help reduce the appearance and severity of jowls.

This routine aims to naturally reduce the appearance of jowls using a combination of facial exercises and facial massage techniques. You can do the full sequence in around eight minutes (I have a YouTube video of it here if you prefer to follow along with me).

Apply a few drops of facial oil or serum to your lower face to make sure your fingers can move easily over your skin. I use the Fusion by Danielle Collins Pro Lift Moisturising Facial Serum. Packed with organic botanical seed oils, it is very nourishing and hydrating and absorbs easily into your skin too.

As well as being a great massage to use to tone jowls and sculpt the jawline, this technique is wonderful for relieving tension in the jaw area. This is somewhere many of us find we store a lot of stress and emotion, so it can end up feeling very tight.

Finish with your mouth in the smile position. Place your index finger on your chin and scoop your lower jaw outwards repeatedly as you slowly tilt your head back. Continue the movement with your mouth as you bring your head back down, then repeat the same sequence again twice more.

Use your index fingers to smooth the skin on either side of your mouth. We never want to create any new lines with the Danielle Collins Face Yoga Method. This is where a mirror can be handy, so you can check that you are smoothing out any little lines that appear when you take this position.

Using your index and middle fingers and your thumb, pinch down into the muscles around your mouth and lower cheek area. Use a little twisting motion to get deeper into the muscle but remember not to lift or drag at the skin.

The course is designed to help you learn more amazing Face Yoga techniques in just 10 minutes a day. There are 10 sessions and you get lifetime access when you purchase the course, so you can revisit the lessons at any time.

Let's discuss Jowl, a common problem area that's difficult to improve using face yoga, self-care methods, or medical treatments. The cheek muscle is responsible for lifting the cheeks and jowls, and it cannot be fixed with just a gel. It's crucial to lift up the muscle, but relaxing the depressor muscle is also important. This muscle is stronger than you think, and preventing saggy emotions and downward angles can help reduce jowl. While gravity plays a part, it's mostly due to the use of the saggy muscle.

I've learned that the tongue should be up and flat, not hanging down, as this can cause tension in the face and neck muscles. Chin tension can also cause muscle depression, so it's important to reduce chin tension and keep the tongue up and flat when the face is at rest. This can reduce tension in the face and even the neck muscles. By mastering good face posture, we can achieve the best version of our face naturally, using natural self-care methods. It's important to keep our facial muscles relaxed and to move them in better ways to achieve our best face.

DAO stretch can help relieve tension that causes a saggy face and undefined jawline, while the masseter stretch can prevent jaw tension and wrinkles. Good face and tongue posture can also help reduce tension in the face and neck muscles. Practicing these exercises and techniques can lead to a more relaxed and toned face. Additionally, regular massage can target specific facial muscles and help maintain good facial tone. It's important to maintain good facial posture and relaxation to achieve the best version of our face naturally.

There has been limited research on the effects of face yoga. Most of the studies have assessed results in a nonquantitative way, focusing on elements like visual observation, participant satisfaction, or questionnaires. Consequently, more research is needed to determine how face yoga benefits people.

May improve facial appearance. A study of 16 women aged 40 to 65 years had participants perform 30 minutes of facial exercise daily for 8 weeks at home. For weeks 9 to 20, participants continued with the exercises three to four times a week. Participants showed some improvements in facial appearance, especially with regard to fullness of the mid-face and lower face.

May improve facial muscle tone. One study focused on the effects of facial exercise with a PAO facial device. The middle part of the device is a mouthpiece. The two wing-like sections on either side of the device are balanced weights. When you nod your head up and down, this causes the weighted ends of the bar to swing.

This study involved 50 women aged between 30 and 63 years. They used the PAO device twice a day for 30 seconds for 8 weeks. The results were assessed using laser scans to determine surface areas, volume, and facial surface distance. Participants displayed increased thickness of their facial muscles.

May lessen the appearance of scars. Experts say that doing facial yoga exercises can help reduce the appearance of a thick scar. When you exercise or massage your face, this stretches your skin and can help a thick scar become more pliable and thinner.

Some experts say that facial yoga may cause wrinkles due to the repetitive movements of the skin. When you repeatedly contract your facial muscles, this might actually cause wrinkles to form. As you age, your skin naturally loses collagen and elastin. Too much massaging or manipulation of your skin may increase its loss of elasticity.

By exercising and strengthening the large bands of muscle that run from the shoulders, both sides of the neck and attach to the jaw bone, (called the Platysma muscle) the appearance of the neck region can be considerably enhanced.

People tend to have a lot of problems with self-expression (speaking their truth to others) around the throat area and this leads to muscle tightness. Regular facial yoga exercises may help release internal emotions and help with communication and self-expression.

Facial yoga method is great for people that work in front of a computer, are frequently on their phones, or spend a lot of time driving. These exercises can help counteract a lot of that forward crouched motion associated with these activities.
