I've watch a few videos on downloading roms but question all downloads I come across thinking it could be a virus. I've been directed to websites such as Internet archive and Arcade data base, Are any files downloaded at either one of these safe? Is the Torrent download of roms safe? Where do you guys download roms? I'm looking for mostly neo geo and arcade roms merged and unmerged single game roms ,thx!

My Opinion is that there is never really a "safe" way to download anything online, however I have never had any issue with archive.org. I could be wrong, but I believe that they pre scan any file that is uploaded.

It's probably against the rules to provide any other links or elaborate where to get roms from so I'm not getting into that, but Google is your friend. I know it mentioned elsewhere on here so I'm just going to mention to google MAME Pleasuredome for the MAME arcade set, same for HBMAME. Neo Geo roms are in the full MAME set.

Retro-Rage, I would agree about not saying anything is a 100 percent safe. That said, I like the confirmation that archive.org is safer than most. Yeah, ill try the google search for "MAME Pleasuredome" and "HBMAME". Thanks man!

Well what sites do you mean exactly? Beside the collection archive and the Homebrew Availability List links already given in this thread which specific ROMS are you looking for? Generally if you are not comfortable or experienced enough to download from just any site then you should probably avoid it. Myself my PC is set up defensively enough I've no fear of downloading from any site, even if something did manage to get through it would be detected and eradicated pretty quickly but that's me.

Other than the sites listed already I tend to get roms from THE ISO ZONE but I know when recommending that to others they come back complaining of ADs / Malware / pop ups etc, thing is because of my set up I don't even see such things so I keep that in mind these days before recommending it. But really even they don't offer anything not already suggested in this thread, were you looking to get a hold of Homebrew that would not be offered here? Because I cannot think of anything else one would be trying to get off risky / questionable sites?

All the original legacy roms are available in the "pinned" Rom Dump Project thread. Team Pixelboy has released a lot of rom images of his releases freely in his yearly Bulletin posts and you just need to search for the thread and then download away. CollectorVision has released a number of rom images of their game releases and you need to visit their site to download. NewColeco has a website with almost all his games available in rom format. Opcode has released all or most of his releases in rom format in his sub-forum. Last, but not least, checkout the ColecoVision and ADAM Information pinned thread for links to numerous other CV websites, especially TenFour's site.

A good idea is to read through all the old threads here in the CV&ADAM Forum as there is a lot of great information and plenty of good stuff to download safely. This place is like an encyclopedia of CV and ADAM information if you put it to use.

You're not gonna find anything ColecoVision related on those sites that isn't available here in the Rom Dump Project pinned thread with the exception of some demos and WIPs. Everything you WANT is right here or on one of the linked websites (TenFour's colecovision.dk website to be exact) in the CV&ADAM Information pinned thread.

DK Arcade hasn't even been finished, let alone released, so nothing to be had there. Check Opcode's sub-forum for the DKA thread that contains a very long and excruciating history of it's development.

There are a lot of really cool DEMO and WIP rom images for the CV that have been made available here, but there is no one site that has them all available to download easily as one package Hopefully that will change this year with a couple new people starting up/taking over CV websites and the digital archive of files that I have made/will make available to them. It's about time the CV has one or two encyclopedia style websites highlighting EVERYTHING.

I wonder if is possible for those people who download the Android source code and customize it then release their custom roms to hack the API or any other part of the codebase like GMail client or network stack so to push in the rom some kind of spyware, virus and so on...

No piece of software that you install on any hardware of any form is 100% safe unless you are the author or you've read all of the source code, verified its safety, and built it yourself. Okay, so this may be something of an oversimplification, but it's actually not too far off in most cases.

Custom ROMs are no exception to this. Yes, a ROM author could put spyware, a backdoor, or just about anything else they wanted into a ROM if they wanted to maliciously exploit it. With AOSP ROMs I suppose the possibilities are somewhat magnified since the Android source itself could be modified to contain some kind of exploit or spyware.

The question "is Android safe by default" is in some ways kind of a meaningless question. Is it designed to be safe? Well yes, data is protected at the application level and apps are sandboxed. Any OS is intended to be safe, but all of that goes out the window when you run a ROM that's not pure AOSP. On top of that, the nature of code is that it has bugs, with Android being no exception. Custom ROMs and manufacturer ROMs alike can absolutely have the potential to introduce (either intentionally or unintentionally) ways for your data to be sniffed or stolen.
