Hello! This seems like such a simple question, but of course I
wouldn't be asking it if I knew the answer: Is there an English-
language translation of Rikyu's 100 poems/sayings available
somewhere? I see that there are a few of them at the Teahyakka
archive[1], but I wonder if there is something more complete out
there.

Hey Katie,

They used to all be on Teahyakka although they were in a strange order
sometimes depending on the weather or something.

The best translation (in my opinion) out there right now is in the
book called "Sen Genshitsu Talks About the Enjoyment of Tea", a
Tankosha book, 2006. The hundred poems start on page 95, translation
by Gretchen Mittwer.

Let me know if you have access, if not we should be able to get them
to you.

Do you know where you can buy this book? Looked at amazon there was one used copy for 50$ but they would not ship outside if USA. I would very much like to buy this book.

I got mine in Japan so I haven't looked; however, I did find it on the
Tankosha web-site for under 1600 Yen:

http://www.tankosha.co.jp/cgi-bin/bookdetail.cgi?pc=0000003296-000000

but I'm not sure if they will ship it outside of Japan. They did ship
the Chanoyu Vocabulary books abroad so they will probably do it but on
the web-site they only let you enter Japanese addresses. Might have
to get a friend in Japan to pick it up or contact Tankosha directly.

I'll let you know if I find it somewhere else as well.

By the way, we should all petition Tankosha to add an English
translation to their web-site as well as ensuring they take foreign
credit cards and ship abroad. What a nice world that would be.

I'll be happy to sign any petition that will get me more information about Tea in English. As for the book I'll e-mail a friend in Japan to see if she can get it for meg.

I'll be very happy to sign it too.
I just got back home after three years in Japan, and I'm already preparing a tea room to start spreading tea in Jordan.
Wish me luck.
