Hello! Some friends of mine have a bunch of unwanted bamboo of
varying sizes in their backyard, and I thought I'd make use of some of
it by cutting it into a few futaoki. I imagine it's a pretty simple
process of cutting at the right distances from a node, sanding the cut
edges, and drilling a hole vertically through the node to keep a
kettle lid atop it from creating a vacuum seal. Is there anything
else I should know or consider about making a bamboo futaoki?

Hi

Usually a bamboo futaoki is made from fresh bamboo so that it is green. They are keept wrapped in plastic inside a fridge to keep them green untill they are used. Traditionally a bamboo futaoki was a renewable item like chakin that was used once and thrown away. The old yellow ones are normally only used in October as the most rustic of months or if the futaoki has a kao (signature / squiggle )  from a famous/important person. However as with many things we have to make exceptions. However, the tea masters that came up with this had a abundance of bamboo just outside their homes, we don't. So I would make futaoki of yellow (not-fresh) bamboo and use it. You might also consider making hanaire or chashaku from the bamboo as old bamboo is more often used/appreciated in those items.

Hello,

I have made some bamboo futaoki. It doesn't have to be green
bamboo.Yes, green bamboo is preferable, but it you'd like to make one
from the yellow bamboo there are some things you can try. I put the
bamboo in a vise to hold it while I was sawing. If you don't have a
vise holding it steady is the important part. Put masking tape over
the place you are going to saw and draw a line so you can make it
straight. The masking tape prevents tearing the fibers.I use a back
saw (small teeth and easier to control) or a Japanese cross cut saw.
Support the piece that will be cut off as you get to the end of sawing
to prevent breaking and leaving a knob on one side.

Drilling the hole is tricky. I used a punch and it made perfect star
shape.

Good luck.

Margie
