Literacy in science is of essence for all citizens in our modern society. In high school, a biology curriculum should focus on actively engaging students with the world around them. Students should gain in-depth knowledge of the different living organisms and the environments they each live in to better protect, sustain or enhance the natural environment.
Typically, high school biology covers the basic biology of living cells, including bacteria, animals, plants, and other forms of life as well. High school biology these days also has a little bit of chemistry, specifically about water, proteins, lipids, and DNA. Courses focusing extensively on DNA, however, are more college level molecular biology, as opposed to the cell biology covered in high school classes.

This year we are offering 2 opportunities for high school students. These opportunities will be a mix of in-person and virtual experiences. They begin as soon as this spring and extend potentially throughout the 2024-2025 academic year. The application for all of these opportunities was the same. This means your one, complete application will allow our hiring committee to consider you for all of the opportunities that you are eligible for and interested in.
In this internship, high school interns complete systems biology research and, if applicable, help develop hands-on instructional modules for students to use as part of school-based science curriculum.
CeBA seeks to introduce high school students to laboratory research in Cell Biology. Participation in this program will help students develop several scientific skills including hypothesis formulation, practical bench skills, data analysis, and dissemination of results. Participants will be mentored by a current researcher in the Duke Cell Biology Department and participate in several activities outside of laboratory research such as career seminars and scientific journal clubs.
Duke University's Department of Cell Biology is offering a paid summer research opportunity to high school juniors and seniors. Participants will complete an independent research project under the guidance of a graduate student or postdoctoral scholar. They will get to see what it is like to be a cell biologist working in a research laboratory. Our goal is to encourage the next generation of young scientists by giving them the confidence and experience to launch their careers!

The Biology program at Iowa State University offers a uniquely flexible and robust curriculum. Students in Biology have the option to select from over 160 advanced courses, allowing them to customize their biology coursework to target specific interests and career directions.
In order to best prepare for coursework in the Biology major, the Biology Student Services Office recommends that high school students complete the following courses prior to beginning their adventure in Biology at ISU:
Chemistry is one of the primary supporting sciences students encounter in the Biology major. For this reason, it is important to have a strong foundation in high school chemistry. Our office encourages students to complete a minimum of one year of high school chemistry.
A firm understanding of introductory level physics can lead to greater success for students enrolled in the Biology program. One year of high school physics is recommended. Students in high schools with AP Physics offerings may choose to enroll in these courses in order to attempt college credit for physics.
Courses in Biology, such as Anatomy and Physiology, Genetics, and Advanced Sciences, are helpful for students entering the Biology program. However, these courses should not take the place of the Chemistry and Physics courses. One year of high school Biology is recommended. If students have the opportunity to enroll in additional Biology courses without sacrificing their supporting sciences, these courses may prove to be beneficial.
Math is an important factor in student success at the university level. Our office encourages students to complete Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Trigonometry in high school, if possible. Students with the opportunity to enroll in AP Statistics, Pre-Calculus, and/or Calculus I courses in high school may attempt college credit for Math.
Although world language is not specifically required by the Biology program, our office encourages high school students to complete three years of foreign language prior to enrolling at Iowa State. This is particularly useful for students interested in obtaining a Biology degree from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which requires 3 years of world language in high school, or 4-8 credits of world language at the university level.
This four-week intensive training program is designed to expose students to a broad range of molecular, microbiological, and cell biological techniques currently used in research laboratories. Students are immersed in the research experience, giving them a taste of "life at the bench." Using a project-based approach, the course progresses from a survey of basic lab techniques to the application of current molecular techniques in cell biology, genetics, developmental biology and cancer biology. After two weeks of basic training, students spend the remainder of the course working on an independent project. Most of a typical RIBS day is spent in lab with lectures given when needed to provide background and context for the experiments. Communication skills are important in science. RIBS students will have weekly writing assignments and keep a detailed lab notebook. Students read original research articles and participate in group presentations. Students will also attend weekly lunch time seminars given by research faculty. The course ends with a research forum in which the students present the results of their projects. Successful completion of the course will give participants the experience and confidence to work in a research laboratory.
RIBS is a residential program and requires students to live on-campus and attend classes in person to complete the program. Students who have completed a significant amount of lab work outside of class may find this course repetitive.
Eligibility: Current 10th or 11th grade students. Students must have completed one year of high school biology by the start of the program. This course is the most rigorous of the pre-college offerings in Biology, requiring that students have a demonstrated passion for science, with top grades in high school biology, math, and chemistry in honors or advanced-level courses, if available at the student's school.

I want to pursue a career in wildlife biology or conservation biology. At my school, there are extensive programs to prepare students for a career in the medical services, and engineering. There's classes for theatre and visual arts, as well as other performing arts programs, however there does not seem to be anything at my school to expose my to the areas of my interest. Is there something I can do on my own time to get some sort of experience/exposure to wildlife/conservation biology? If so, what?

High school biology teachers not only teach and help answer questions, they also inspire their students to seek out the answers for themselves. Using different learning methods and materials, they have the opportunity to encourage students to explore the natural world around them and learn about new and evolving scientific theories.
High school biology teachers provide instruction in the life sciences for students between the ninth and twelfth grades. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on lab projects, field trips, mixed media materials and discussions, they teach students about different subject areas within the broad field of biology, including ecology, botany, zoology, biochemistry and genetics. At some schools, biology teachers may provide preparation courses for standardized tests, such as the AP biology exam.
Although teacher certification requirements vary from state to state, all public schools require teachers to be certified in order to teach science. Many states also ask public school teachers to take supplemental education courses to maintain a teaching license. If you accept a position at a private school, you may not need a teaching license.
