The University of Georgia Office of
Service-Learning coordinates a network of AmeriCorps VISTAs (Volunteers
in Service to America), to support local community and campus partners
to increase their capacity for bringing individuals and communities out
of poverty. The University of Georgia VISTA Network is seeking several
AmeriCorps VISTAs for a year of service, starting Feb. 21, 2017. Applications for the below are due no
later than January 4, 2017. The AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to
America (VISTA) program places passionate individuals in a year-long, full-time
position to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or
public agency. They focus their efforts to build the organizational capacity
of organizations that improve health and educational services, reduce food
insecurity, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income
communities. AmeriCorps VISTAs are full-time, year-long volunteers and
are compensated with a small living allowance (less than $1,000/month),
health care benefits, a relocation allowance, and an end-of-term education
grant or stipend.
School Garden VISTA: As part of a network of VISTAs, the School
Garden VISTAs are placed at one of four middle schools in Athens-Clarke
County, GA to develop and implement integrated programs incorporating gardening,
nutrition, and sustainability to improve the diet and health of middle
school children. Activities include establishing programs with children,
university students, and school personnel to support and maintain school
gardens, to enhance access to fresh fruits and vegetables, to reduce food
waste, and to enhance sustainability, both during the school day, after
school, and during the summer. The VISTA will recruit and train volunteers
to assist with school gardens, develop and implement garden, nutrition,
and sustainability programs at a middle school, support food waste reduction
and promote increased use of fresh produce in the school cafeteria, collaborate
with others in school garden network, track/evaluate efforts, and build
capacity for program sustainability. Priority will be given to individuals
who are recent graduates, have gardening experience, have an academic interest
and background in related issues, and have previous volunteer experience
with school children. Ability to collaborate with diverse constituencies,
work independently, travel (within Clarke County), and utilize social media
is required.

at the Athens Community Council on Aging (ACCA) in Athens, GA and works
with the various partners to build capacity within the Senior Hunger Coalition
(SHC) efforts. Specifically, the VISTA will be a central communicator between
Campus Kitchen, the Food Bank, UGArden, and ACCA in order to expand meal
distribution to better meet the needs of current clients and to reach more
under-served seniors in the area. The VISTA will help secure resources
for SHC by raising awareness of senior hunger in the Athens area, writing
grants, and organizing fundraisers. The VISTA will also help strengthen
existing beyond-meal initiatives including Senior SNAP Outreach, Lunch
Buddy, and a senior transportation effort, all of which target the root
causes of senior hunger.
Apply by January 4 through the AmeriCorps
portal at https://my.americorps.gov/mp/listing/viewListing.do?id=52783&fromSearch=true UGA Law Clinic VISTA The Law Clinic VISTA will be placed at
the University of Georgia School of Law, and will work to enhance the ability
of the law school’s 15 experiential learning clinics to better serve low-income
people with critical legal needs in Athens, GA. The law school needs data
management tools that can collect, analyze, and report information about
its activities, allowing them to assess the impact of their work on clients,
to identify gaps in services, improve outreach and education, and enhance
their ability to secure funds to support their work. The VISTA will assess
current data collection methods and propose improved methods for capturing,
assessing, and reporting clinic activity; interview faculty and staff to
determine data needs; and identify data management software, including
law practice management tools, that will produce information to guide decisions
both about individual clinics and the clinical programs as a whole. The
VISTA will learn about each clinic; research database applications for
the law practice clinics; develop protocols for data entry; train others
on how to use the database; and report data to demonstrate impacts and
outcomes from legal services provided to low-income clients. Candidates
must comply with client confidentiality rules. Preferred qualifications
are a background in data collection/management in social sciences; demonstrated
interest in law, political science, social work, or public health/affairs;
experience in public or non-profit administration and grant writing; ability
to collaborate with diverse constituencies, work independently, and use
database applications; a listening ear; and awareness of social, economic,
and health-related issues arising from poverty.
