Hello all,

I hope all of you are having a wonderful summer time.

I just would like to share some information that might
be useful for those who are dealing with int'l criminal justice,
multilateralism in conflict management and US foreign policy
toward Africa.

I've been doing my fieldwork at the African Union (AU) HQ
in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Yesterday, I attended a workshop
on ICC Endictment of Sudanese President sponsored by
Institute for Security Studies (ISS). The Ambassador of
Sudan to Ethiopia/AU gave an official statement that was
followed by very intense debates among African/non-African diplomats,
AU officials, human rights activists and so on. As you can guess,
the overall tone of debates here was more toward political realism
than legal idealism and a sort of defensive of the Al Bashir regime.
ISS (South African based) has been doing excelent research and
consultation works for the AU. They have posted some relevant
documents from the workshop on their website.
http://www.iss.co.za/

Last year, the US State Dept created a new ambassadorial position
that exclusively deals with the US - AU relations besides
a bilateral ambassadorial position that deals with the US -
Ethiopia relations. The State Dept has a policy to upgrade
the US Embassy to Ethiopia/AU to the largest embassy
(in terms of number of diplomats and local stuff) in Africa
within a few years. Currently, the embassies in Kenya and
South Africa are larger than the one in Ethiopia. This US foreign
policy signifies the importance of multilateralism in diplomacy,
conflict management and economic development in Africa and
definately gives some credits to the AU's efforts for
African regional integration.

One more story I want to share is that there is a GDA Ph.D student
who is currently serving as a consultant at the AU Peace & Security Dept.
She has been helping me a lot here, and I really appreciate
our global DGA network and friendship. Success of our DGA students
and alumni is always encouraging and inspiring to me.

See you all in September.

Way to go ...

By the way, my daughter Camille, who is also a Rutgers student (Undergrad Political Science) , now works for the United Nations in New York.  She has two credits to go to getting her diploma in the spring.

And Mae Ramadan (DGA) and some other Rutgers MBA graduates are interning at the UN Headquarters this summer.  I had lunch with them one time.

Mae Ramadan,

I used to be the DGA Rutgers program and used to intern in the Dept. of Disarmament Affairs, and wanted to know if there were any openings/opportunties within the UN. Please feel free to contact me.

Respectfully,

Hey, Mae. Congrats too....

Yesterday, we passed by your office on the way to the cafeteria (me and Camille) and you were already out (around 1:30 lunchtime).  A chubby guy opened the door and I thought he gave you the message.  Again, congrats also.
