Dear Dr. Whiteson,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding a potential 'Perspectives' piece highlighting the likely applicability of ideas from island biogeography to patterns of microbial colonisation and infection of the lungs via dispersal from the oral cavity. We were intrigued by your approach and agree that it will be of use to broaden the dialog between microbial ecologists and clinicians of cystic fibrosis patients. Unfortunately, at this stage, we are not persuaded that the novel biological insights of your perspective represent the strength of advance that we would require for publication in PLOS Biology relative to other recent studies, reviews and essays that have discussed the importance of community ecological perspectives for understanding patterns of microbial diversity and infectivity in the lungs. We receive a large number of unsolicited proposals for our magazine section and, unfortunately, are unable to take them all.
I am sorry not to be more positive on this occasion. If you are interested in pursuing this with one of our sibling journals at PLOS, please find full details at
http://www.plos.org/journals/ . The editors of the journal will then let you know whether your work is suitable for full submission there.
Best wishes,
Christine
