With the exception of a few slackers who I have emailed, the huge majority of you have put your topic outlines on the Trello board and done a damn fine job too. Thank you for that!    This will help the content committee make sure we have good coverage, with as little overlap as needed.  I appreciate the hard work all of you are putting into CFSummit. Some of the topics can't put public points out due to NDA, so you get a pass.

I would like to float an idea:

  • Have you ever had someone ask you a really good question during your presentation?
  • A question that made you wish you had included that information in your talk? (too late now right)

What is your opinion of opening the Trello board up for comments to the public? Then you could solicit questions about your topic prior to the conference? It also may help you organize your material and my continue the sense of transparency and openness we have being trying to promote as part of the conference.  Some topics don't lend themselves to people asking questions beforehand and some topics can't be publically discussed prior to the conference, but the vast majority of topics may benefit from this "crowd sourcing"

Thoughts?

You can publicly flog me, I don't mind.  Or better yet, just tell Liz and she can flog me for you!

I'm ok with that. I think most of us want to deliver talks relevant to what attendees want to know/learn.

I'm all for it. The better I can shape this ahead of time the more worthwhile it'll be for both speaker and audience.

I hate it!!  No way!

Say, where can I get in line for the Liz floggings?

Jason

P.S. Yeah, that's cool. Open them up.

Sounds good to me. I would ask that you tell people that there will be a deadline for adding comments, and that be made clear as part of the announcement of public commenting. It'll be right difficult to rework the presentation the night before the conference begins.

Yeah, that's cool.  My presentation is totally done, packaged, and ready to go but i guess I can rewrite it again for the public.  **

Ok I have opened the board up for commenting and posted this blog article about it: http://cfml.us/bb5

With respect to this opening for questions, I do have a couple of concerns, that I think could be addressed by a tweak of the blog entry before too many read it. (I realize this will be seen by some as me being Chicken Little, and at risk of being TLDNR’d.  Hey, I’m a consultant and I get paid to anticipate problems.):

- first, right now, there’s nothing (in the blog entry or on the trello board) to clarify that this is looking for feedback, which the speaker will consider. It’s not a guarantee that the speaker will address that point, right? Maybe it will be too much to get into, or may seem off-topic to the speaker, etc. Right now, there’s no setting of mutual expectations.

- second, by letting them know they can ask a question, it may imply that this is an open forum for discussion of that question, where they may expect (or a speaker may desire) to have some back and forth. And then others may chime in in reply, which could grow outside the intention of the request simply for “questions” to be considered, right?  Again, even if a speaker is ok with the interaction,  some speakers may not be so motivated. Should the questioner then be miffed if there’s no reply?

Perhaps you may want to tweak the blog entry, or add something somewhere on the trello board, like that left “conference notes” area, to conveys that this is a place to ask questions which will be considered to be addressed in the talk, with no guarantee of that or even any reply from the speakers.  (If it’s in the activity area on the right, it will be lost off the top of the display as new comments/questions are posted, right?)

Seem reasonable? Or needless melodrama?

I think people (if they comment at all) will understand the intent. Not everyone needs everything spelled out for them.  If they get out of line I will send Jason to remove their kneecaps.

How will we know if someone has commented on one of our 'cards'? Is there some kind of notification in Trello or will we need to check back periodically?

by default trello will email you every now and then (every few hours?) with recent activity on cards to which you are assigned or subscribed. you can modify this behavior in your personal trello preferences.
