The US Department of Agriculture NIFA Grant for food security is currently open for applications. Approximately $6 million will be made available to support new awards that focus on reducing crop and livestock losses in U.S. agricultural systems. Proposed projects should develop and extend sustainable, integrated management strategies that reduce pre and post-harvest losses caused by diseases, insects, and weeds in crop and animal production systems, while maintaining or improving product quality and production efficiency. Proposals should aim to develop approaches for managing losses throughout the whole food system (production, harvesting, storage, processing, distribution, and consumption), and should address the social, economic, and behavioral aspects of food security. Project types supported by AFRI within this Challenge Area will propose multi-function Integrated Research, Education, and/or Extension Projects, Food and Agricultural Science Enhancement (FASE) Grants, and conferences and/or workshops. M.S. Assistantship in Fisheries Ecology in the Amazon

A qualified and motivated candidate is sought to investigate hydrological influences on the dynamics of commercially important fish populations in the Amazon Basin. The selected candidate will design a catch data analysis plan to investigate the following two main research questions: (1) how natural fluctuations in river water levels affect the population dynamics and associated fishery yields of a chosen species (e.g., Prochilodus nigricans,Colossoma macropomum); and (2) how water level fluctuations altered by climate change and constructions of dams impact fishery yields and associated food security.

Evaluate Asian carp populations in tributaries of the Mississippi River across southeastern Iowa. The selected person will undertake a project to classify fisheries policies (government financial transfers) and determine their impacts on indicators such as harvest, biodiversity and income. She/He will report to the Senior Economist of the Fisheries Policies Division in the Trade and Agriculture Directorate (TAD).
Responsibilities:
• Plan, research and draft analytical and conceptual reports on government financial transfers to fisheries, their classification, implementation and the interaction between the impacts of these policies and the system of fisheries management rules and regulations in place.

Associate Biologists typically have three to six years of experience and possess a Bachelors or Masters of Science degree in appropriate fields. Candidates should be familiar with plant and animal identification and/or ability to determine species; be able to work well with only general direction in a busy, work environment; and be willing to take on new things and learn new skills. The ability to be consistent with routine tasks is also essential. Rigorous field schedules, some out of area travel, and some physically taxing environmental conditions are elements of the work.
Specific skill sets of high interest at this time include, experience working with state and federally listed species, experience conducting biological investigations in southern California native habitats, wetland regulatory permitting experience, scientific diving and small boat handling experience, and experience with physically demanding environmental work on the water or in natural areas.

Fish Habitat Technician

The culturist will work at the Tutka Bay Lagoon Hatchery (near Homer, AK) and assist management staff with the rearing and stocking of pink salmon at a remote hatchery located at Tutka Bay. Duties include sorting of broodstock,collection of gametes, incubation and short-term rearing in net pens. Duties also include routine maintenance of the facility and equipment. Required tolive on site (housing provided).
Qualifications:
Two years experience at fish culturist level or more, with 1 year working experience with pink salmon is an asset, however, not essential. Must be comfortable working around boats and in a remote location.

The policy internship is designed to further professional development for current or recently graduated students by working with Ocean Leadership’s Public Affairs staff. Postdoctoral Research Associate

Assist with the development of a spatially explicit population model for Asian carp to evaluate harvest scenario options. This model will facilitate management decisions regarding harvest strategies along the Illinois River to reduce the odds of Asian carp entering the Great Lakes. This will include parameterization, model construction, and scenario simulations to identify optimal harvest strategies while accounting for uncertainty, as well as sensitivity analyses to prioritize future parameter estimations. The incumbent will work closely with researchers from Southern Illinois University, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, among others.
Qualifications:
