Dear CFMIP metrics/diagnostics developers,

Please see below and let me know your answer to 1 and 2.

A.      I talked with Peter Gleckler in PCMDI in the Workshop on CMIP5 Model Analysis and Scientific Plans for CMIP6 at the end of October.

1.       He is planning to collect info of metrics/diagnostics of different processes developed by the experts and publicise a catalogue, and he would like to include codes from the CFMIP diagnostics code repository to the catalogue. One necessary condition to your code being included in the catalogue is that the code is written in an open source language. For your info, there is a future plan to use these metrics/diagnostics for regular evaluation and benchmarking of processes in the future CMIP models. Various works are going on to create a set of metrics such as ESM/Val tools. Since many of existing tools are written in python, this language would be ideal unless you have a specific preference. It is noted that we will still link to people's code from the CFMIP website, whatever language they are written in.

Question: Have you provided or will you provide your metrics/diagnostics code in an open source code? If yes, which language?

2.       Also he asked me whether we are interested in writing a paper as a part of a special issue which evaluates different processes in CMIP6 models.

Question: Would you like to contribute to such a paper as a co-author by applying your metrics/diagnostics to CMIP6 models?

B.      Any update to your code repository should be managed in GitHub instead of Google code. A technical guidance will be provided soon.

Best wishes,

Yoko
