Hi Fernanda and All!

I'd love to stay on this list to offer input when I can, but going into 2013, I will likely be busy with other projects/my full time job and thus not be able to serve with the planning group. I can also help with any online advertising (posting any announcements/flyers on FB, email, etc.) if needed.

Wishing everyone a happy December filled with good food and joy. :)

Hey there!

I would be happy to meet with everyone in Januray if the scheduling works out. My calendar might be pretty crazy in the spring so we will have to see how involved I can be in planning depending on what everyone decides they want to do.

Happy Holidays!

Thanks for starting the discussion Fer!!

I'm in for sure.

And some things...
- I've been attending the Food System Alliance meetings (just fyi, I'll send updates as appropriate).
- 1 in 10 will meet for an update/checkin, hopefully in two weeks (still working out date, y'all will be invited).
- Please SAVE the date: Sat Feb 23rd for the first ever KALE Festival! It will be at the Peace Garden. It's early planning stages right now, so we'd love input/collaboration since the date will come up quick! (intention is somewhat like a mini CFJ).
- There's a "People's Assembly" in early stages as well, around food justice. I went to first meeting. Too much to tell about it via email. It is related to CFJ and they'd want us involved, so just something to roll around in your head right now.

Hope y'all are well. Been too long!

Speaking of the peoples assembly, I'm including some people that we're a part of that assembly in this thread so they are aware of the interest to continue this tradition here in San Diego :)

Looking forward to organizing!

Hey Gang,

I'm glad to see the discussion starting for how to address the CFJ for
2013.  I would like to ask that someone in the group volunteer to represent
the CFJ planning group at Roots.  I'm no longer able to commit to helping
plan the CFJ (though I will absolutely attend whatever the group puts
together and am happy to record video of the event if desired).  As such,
since Roots is our fiscal sponsor, it needs to have someone come to the
board meetings and provide updates about the planning. Roots, of course,
likes to help promote food justice events in its monthly newsletter and on
its website, so an update to the board also gains the CFJ events some
exposure to the community and assures good attendance (at least from a
segment of community).

If possible, can the group designate someone from the first meeting to
start providing updates?  The Roots board meets monthly, usually on the
first Thursday) but if that's a challenge you could send in a written
update via email.  Thank you!

Ian - How much does Roots still hold for CFJ??? (can you ask Roots for financial update for us?)
- If you cannot be our contact, who will be the contact to give us those updates? As much as we have to be accountable (turn in receipts for any reimbursement), we also need that from Roots (transparency about what monies we have).
- Are they fiscally sponsoring until that money is used up or do we have any other type of agreement?
- CFJ can certainly talk about someone maybe attending Roots (Jan 3rd? what time and where? I have a meeting at USD from 6-6:30, but otherwise can be available. Feb 7th might also be possible).
- If you aren't able to represent Roots for and with us, is there someone else from Roots that can start attending CFJ meetings? This is this big Food Justice picture after all and you *know* how CFJ needs help, so it's better if we have more connection than us going to their meeting and them spreading word. So, maybe Mindy? Erica (lives in City Hts)? Adam (Rachel's brother)?
Thanks.

And EVERYONE...
Here's the sum of responses regarding attending meeting(s)

Hey Gang:

My recent kidney scare/surgery was a wake-up call that I really need to shift gears and refocus on better work-life balance in 2013.

Per our wonderful conversation at the 2012 CFJ Event debrief, I maintain that I am deeply committed to food justice efforts in San Diego, but need to take a hiatus for now.  Please keep me on the list though - and I'll be happy to help get the word out for your key events.

(If anyone ever wants to get together just for fun I'd love to catch up!)

Hugs to you all,
~K

I'll check on the Roots account balance.  Regarding someone from Roots getting involved in the planning of CFJ, this could be the same person that's going to Roots meetings.  You're welcome to reach out to Erica, Mindy and others, of course, but the person coming to the board meetings will know just as much as any Roots people about the organization.

I know CFJ needs more planners, but I simply can't commit this year.

Roots balance is $2400 even.  I spoke to Mel and he would like to connect a representative or two (or three, whomever wants to connect between CFJ and Roots) with the executive committee of Roots first.  It's a good time to re-establish what the relationship between the two groups means and make sure it still makes sense for Roots to be the fiscal sponsor for the CFJ event/group.  Part of that is to review the fees that Roots charges any of its programs (you may remember that we had a similar fee under ASD).  I think Roots is likely still the right organization to provide fiscal sponsorship, personally, but it's still good to review.  I wasn't able to provide a good connection between the two groups last year and, as a result, I think Roots felt like they didn't have enough information about what was going to happen prior to the event (so they couldn't effectively help to promote it).  I know we all felt like a lot of pieces were a bit sloppy last year, and there's a general concern about that, too.  Roots being the sponsor of the group needs to ensure that the event, at a  minimum, doesn't reflect poorly on the organization.  That may seem like too much oversight to some of you, but they don't want anything that we haven't already set for ourselves as goals.  I know we all want to have a high-quality, well-attended event that we can be proud of.  Roots only wants the same thing as our main sponsor (as would any of our sponsors, donors or volunteers), so I would hope that wouldn't seem unfair.

I'll let you know what the date/time/location is for the meeting between Roots and the CFJ representatives and if too many people can't make it, I'm sure we can reschedule.  It will likely be a Monday afternoon (and one more reason I can't be there).

Thanks for the update Ian!

Mel wants CFJ to meet with the Roots Exec Committee first... first before what? (Not a problem, I'm just not clear what it means - before CFJ meets at all, or before a month or two into planning, or what?).

Regarding date/time/location... I don't remember people's schedules (or how much they may have changed, etc). But if Roots wants 2-3 or more of us to be there, it seems a fair/best practice to check in about that first or at least offer options. A Mon afternoon might work out fine, or not at all. Even though the Exec Ctte (which has 4? people) will have time constraints as well, it would essentially be inefficient (and sad) to plan one and then find out none of us CFJ could attend! Maybe a doodle would be helpful?

Or... CFJ folks (ANY of you, even folks who can't do planning meetings)... do any of you know right now if a Mon afternoon might work for you? I *might* be able to do 4-5pm (no later), but I'd need to know ASAP (usually it won't work, but I can make an exception with enough advance) and only if it was at OBPeople's or some other metro location (like City Heights).

As for the relationship... well sure! It definitely makes sense to re-connect/re-establish. If for some reason odd reason it didn't make sense to continue though (highly unlikely, but still), what would that mean?!? Asking since it was put out there (even though likely not a problem)

Also, a fee makes sense of course. Hopefully it's similar to ASD (which was 7%). Did we not work this out before?! Zoiks, that's bad form! And oversight makes sense as well. Though I will say that some of that responsibility will have to fall on them as well. This is/was supposed to be partnership, not just fiscal (because if it was, we could have gone to a number of other org's).

Thanks again Ian! Always good to get things cleaned up :)

While my term on the Board of Slow Food Urban San Diego is ending as of December 2012 - I just want to put in a reminder that for several years SFUSD was also a fiscal sponsor of CFJ  Event.  There is a new Food Justice chair (whom I haven't yet met) coming on board in January - so it might be good for the same CFJ rep to Roots to also connect with SFUSD.  I can connect that individual once I connect with the new Chair.

Hope that helps,
Kate

Checking back in... hope you are all enjoying the holiday season.

And maybe now y'all have a better sense of your Jan schedule?

Here are times I can do...
(it might open up more, but i'm still figuring out)

Thur 3rd @ 7pm (meeting 6-7)
Sun 6th @ anytime (11-1 or 2-4 or 5-7 or 7-9)
Fri 11th @ 7pm (milking goat before)
Sat 12th @ 5pm (workshop til 4pm)
Sun 13th @ 11am-1pm (before people's assembly at 3)
Wed 16th @ 7pm (meeting 6-7)
Thur 17th @ 8pm (after 1in10 meeting, but sooner would be good)

Previously, the "YES get together" folks were:
Fer, Rachel, Mariah, Cathy, Corrine, Priya, Andres
But of course ALL are welcome.

AND... two other things that y'all might want to participate in:
-- Sun 13th @ 3pm til 6pm (I think, or 7??) -- early planning/discussion for a "People's Assembly" around food. Coordinated by "Food Solidarity" folks
-- Thurs 17th @ 6pm-7:30 -- 1 in 10 Coalition (we had about 20 folks get together on 12/20)

Thanks,
Mariah
