Meeting Re-cap (September 3, 2011)
Thanks to all attendees: Sarah C, Clare W, David T, Eric O, Robert M,
Stephen M, Wendy K, Jim D, and der Brat
Thanks to Sarah for hosting.
My recollections of what we decided:
Earth’s Last Birthday Party: Jim Dee is the planner. Everything is
pretty much set with time and place – Oct 16, 1-3pm at Book People.
The cakes are going to have images, and Jim wants to find suitable
ones. David T is going to see if his daughter might be able to help
with the cakes where she works. Clare has requested we not get el
cheapo cakes from HEB.
For Darwin Day: Jim will also check with them about times: either Feb
11 or 12 (the actual birth anniversary day). We expect to have
children’s events and a panel discussion at Book People. Robert Milne
is working on the panel of experts which includes himself and some of
the following possible folks: Donna Howard, Sarah Eckhardt (sp?),
David Hillis, Camille Parmesan, S. Sarkar.
Darwin Day also will have a potluck dinner and movie most likely at
TUMC - either Saturday Feb 11 or in conjunction with the Evolution
Sunday that Sid Hall has each year.
Eric is taking the lead for the Samhain (Oct 29) and Saturnalia (Dec
17) celebrations. He will need help with setting up and cleaning up.
He is looking into 3 possible venues: First UU, Trinity UMC, and
Cospace for either or both events.
Robert suggested Michael Burns (a CFI member from Uvalde) as
entertainer for the Saturnalia; he is apparently quite a good singer/
guitar player. Also, we expect to have the white elephant gift
exchange at the Saturnalia, and karaoke and costume contest for kids
at Samhain – and maybe a “spooky house” – both events would be potluck
dinners.
I have suggested and will take the planning lead for a “March Sanity”
party – possibly March 17. Another potluck affair with entertainment
of some sort. [Suggestions are being taken]
Finally, we mentioned some changes in Drinking Rationally on the 2nd
and 4th Mondays. We are looking to return to Sherlock’s. Other
suggested venues were Opa’s on S. First; Waterloo Icehouse on 38th;
and Vino Vino on Guadalupe.
[Someone mentioned something called Café Scientifique, but I missed
the details of what and where.]
I expect to call a planning update meeting in early October - let me
know if you have a preference.
