Or lack thereof...

Just informing y'all that the only flash drive that had the quick books on it was confirmed dead this week. Dan has been helpful but end of the day I'm going to have to recreate the books from last year to file our tax return, our solicitation license, and of course to figure out who has paid and who hasn't.

Just an FYI.

Is the data file what was lost, or the entire QB file with the chart of accounts, etc?

If the entire chart of accounts etc. was lost, I’m pretty sure I will have a backup of that from when I was treasurer.  Then you would only have to recreate transactions.

Sam, unless you have a background in bookkeeping, are you sure you want to do this?  Wouldn’t it make more sense for the board to authorize you to hire a bookkeeper for about $50 an hour for however many hours it would take to recreate this history?  It is drudge, dreaded work.

Currently we have a backup file which is less than a year old and electronic copies of the transactions subsequent to that. Dan is in the process of trying to get a more-recent backup file from the computer at his former firm which might move that date forward in time somewhat.

Once we know whether that effort is successful I'll return to the Board with a recommendation on what to do going forward.  If it turns out there's only a few months missing, then recreating the transactions shouldn't be too hard (or time consuming). Right now the more pressing issue is just the timeline, we're already late on our IRS and Dept of Ag filings so while those fines are not particularly large, they grow each month.

Oh, I’m so glad to hear this.  I thought you were going to be starting from scratch and wanted to cry for you.
