Hi Everyone!
Abbreviations at the bottom.*  Hope summer is going well.  I have a slew of CFE business and news.
- Congratulations associate interns!  You have all been promoted to real interns!  Once we get the new budget (still waiting), I'll meet with Leslie to change your position (and wage) in the system.
- Did anyone register us for the Community Resource Expo?  The deadline is Aug. 2.  We need a point person for this.
- We got an office (Reiss 246)!!  It's super nice, and we'll be able to hold office hours, store stuff, study, and hang out there whenever we want.
- Beyond the Bottle and recycling projects are near completion!
- Edd wants to sponsor 1 event/month except for December (no events) and April (many events).  Edd has sort of picked out the events for the fall semester, and they seem really cool to me.  We will need help organizing and advertising all of these, of course.
  • September 30: Environmental Film Festival asked us to screen "A River Changes Course" http://ariverchangescourse.com/
  • Some Wednesday night in October:  Lincoln Brower, a famous monarch butterfly conservationist.
  • November: John Seager, President, Population Connection (formerly known as Zero Population Growth)
- Edd is giving us freedom to choose speakers/events for January, February, and April (March is EFF).  Between these three speakers/events, we will probably have $1,000-$1,500 available for honoraria, travel expenses, etc.  I want to go for a big name speaker in April, so start thinking now.  Bill Nye the Science Guy was an idea I recently had.
- We are probably looking to hire 2-3 new associate interns.

Can everyone send me an email with the following information:
1. Study abroad plans for this year;
2. An estimate of how many hours per week you will be able to work;
3.Are you work-study?  (If the CFE is your primary employer at GU, the government subsidizes your pay so the CFE saves money);
4. Active projects/events/speakers you are working on;
5. New project/event/speaker ideas;

Gabe,

Excellent! I'm so pumped for this year! Yes, I have registered our group for the Expo, and we are working with Leslie to secure a spinner for a game (the theme for the Expo is "Make Your Own Luck") as well as some prizes. Currently, the Expo is to be in Sellinger and the Leavey Program Room on Wednesday, September 4 from 10am-1pm. Please let me know if and when you can help man the table!
In addition, Michelle and I are working to see if we can bring back the old Journal of the Environment that Georgetown used to have. Unfortunately, printing costs looks like they'll be around $2000-3000, so we're looking to get other sponsors, e.g., the Corp, Trader Joe's. If that gets underway, anybody with CFE is welcome to be on the editorial board if they so desire.
To your specific questions, Gabe, I hope to work 10-15 hours a week; I am work study, but my home department is OCAF, so they'll take care of that. The above two projects are the ones currently underway for me. Also, I LOVE the Bill Nye idea, but I think getting him for only $1000-2000 will be very difficult, especially since he travels a lot less now due to age. Does anyone we know have an in with him?
Lastly, you mentioned Edd wants to do one event per month; I assume this means a major event? I think we should push to have maybe some smaller movies or speakers in addition; otherwise, people get the impression that CFE hardly ever does anything.
Looking forward to this semester!!

-Alex

Gabe,

Sounds great! Most importantly, Alex and I are running point for the Community Expo. Alex already registered us and we are working on things for the table. :)

Also, your info:

1) None.
2) Depends on the week and on events. Hopefully between 10-15? (Potentially less during slow periods, definitely more during event planning.)
3) I am, but I'm waiting to find out if I get a job at OCAF or not -- I'm supposed to know by August. If so, they'll end up with the work-study $$. If not, CFE can go crazy.
4) Community Resources Expo (planning the game, prizes, and trying to get sponsors), trying to get the ball rolling on GUJOE (trying to find sponsors, talking to Prof. Beach for guidance, trying to figure out plans moving forward) -- I'll end up helping out with speakers and/or movie nights, too. (Also, if Edd wants to do one particular event per month, that's cool, but I really think we need to do some smaller events too, like movie nights or something. The more things we do, the more visibility on campus we get. The more visibility on campus we get, the more people take us seriously. The more people take us seriously, the better the chances that CFE sticks around for a very very long time...which is what we all want!)
5) I'll get back to you on that once I think some more. (That said, I agree with Alex. Bill Nye is awesome, but I highly doubt we could get him for such a low price unless someone has an in.)

Best,
Michelle

Hi there!
That all sounds amazing! And thank you Alex and Michelle for taking charge of the community expo!

Here are the answers to your questions:
1. Study abroad plans for this year
Nada. I will be soaking up every moment of senior year on campus.

2. An estimate of how many hours per week you will be able to work;
It really depends on what we need! I'll just do, you know? 10ish?

3.Are you work-study?  (If the CFE is your primary employer at GU, the government subsidizes your pay so the CFE saves money);
I am work study, but the MSB is my primary employer. But I don't work enough hours there for it to be a problem for the CFE I don't think...

4. Active projects/events/speakers you are working on;
I've been trying to keep up with some content for Twitter/Facebook over the summer. I'd really like to work on policy/practices for reducing waste in Red Square (in April I'd be walking home from the library and there would just be piles of crumped fliers... ) and options to reduce waste all around campus, whether it's working with OCAF to require recycle bins at events, etc... these are all just thoughts

5. New project/event/speaker ideas;
Ah I went into this in #4. I also want to help with events/speakers more. And whatever else needs an extra brain or hands!

Hi Gabe,

Thanks for getting us organized early!  I'm studying abroad this fall so I don't have any current projects.  In the spring when I get back I should be able to work 10+ hours a week depending on what projects need work and whether or not I have an internship.  I really enjoyed doing behind-the-scenes work with the recycling bin project this spring so I'd love to do more of that type of work when I get back.  A way to do this might be to see if there are any projects that the Office of Sustainability needs help with.  In the spring we could try to get someone from the Southern Environmental Law Center to come speak about federal policy and the law to try to lure in students interested in government affairs.  Or we could try to get someone from the EPA since they can't take money. I know the group Futures in Science and Humanities is thinking of bringing in environmental speakers this year and they would probably be interested in co-sponsoring.

Hi Gabe!

I'll be studying abroad in the spring. In the fall, I should be able to work about 6-8 hours per week. I can probably do more if we have an event coming up or something, but I have two other jobs (RHO and Yates) so I don't want to over commit myself. I am not work study and I don't know which of my jobs is my primary. As for projects, I also think it would be a good idea to see what the Office of Sustainability has going on so we can work together or help them out.

Alex and Michelle— I would LOVE to help get the journal up and running. I have a lot of ideas about it that we can talk about when we get back.

I was also thinking that we should have a voice in the planning process of the new dorm to ensure that it is going to be an environmentally friendly building and that the green space lost to the building will be replaced somewhere else. Right now administration says that they are going to make the parking lot across from Darnell green space.

We can work with college Dems, and college Republicans if they're interested, on their internship fairs to bring in more environmental groups.

Hey Gabe! (and everyone!)

1. I will be studying abroad in the fall.
2. When I get back, I will probably be doing about the same amount of hours as Laura, approximately 6-8 per week. I also have a job with the Office of Sustainability, so I feel like there can be some good collaboration going on there between the two departments.
3. I am not work study.
4. Well I was working on the recycling signs which are pretty much done, so that's awesome! I'll try to help set them up before I go abroad.
5. With the Office of Sustainability I am going to have an ongoing project in the Spring where we are trying to install some green roofs (particularly in Village A), so maybe I can try and do some of that from a CFE angle as well. I'll start thinking about speakers, and I definitely wanted to help with Green Square Fair again. Also, about 20 new hydration stations were ordered for the school, but there is some difficulty with getting them installed due to funding/facilities. If they have yet to be installed by the time that I get back, I would like to spend some time picking out locations for them to be installed and helping that process move forward. I'll keep thinking of some more project ideas/speakers for the Spring. Have a great fall guys, I'll miss ya!

Hey everyone!

1. I'm in school for Fall semester only
2. 5-10 hours, depending on what's needed of me
3. not work study
4. Still committed to working closely with Audrey (and therefore office of sustainability); was previously working on New South Student Center, and would be happy to continue as our representative there, and to take on the new dorm, though I'm not around for the long term, so maybe someone with longevity should get behind that. Otherwise I'm really happy to carry out supplementary tasks to all the rest of you

see you soon!
