Georgetown University is proud to announce a call for applications to GU undergraduates for a new multi-disciplinary Sustainability internship for summer 2013 and academic year 2013-14. These pre-professional internships are available to rising juniors and seniors from any school or major. The full-time on-campus summer internship will cover 10 weeks, from June 3rd – August 16th. Students must be available Monday – Thursday from 9:30am – 4:30pm for the summer internship. Students should then expect to commit 10 hours/week during each semester of the 2013-2014 academic year. (Students studying abroad for one semester during AY 2013-14 are still eligible to apply.) Undergraduate students will be awarded a $4,000 stipend for the summer and a $1,000 stipend during the Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semesters. Students will also earn a GUROP notation on their transcript for undergraduate research. The internship will be supervised by a Georgetown faculty member and graduate student assistant.
During the first phase of the summer internship, students will learn about the breadth of sustainability issues affecting urban environments and specifically institutions of higher education. Students will be exposed to these issues through on-campus guest lectures and presentations by experts in a wide diversity of fields, including water conservation, green infrastructure, environmental justice, urban transportation models, food security, solar energy, and behavior change to name a few. Students will compare urban sustainability plans and transition to examining both implemented and drafted sustainability plans for universities. Students will spend part of these internship days further exploring these issues through library research and area field trips.
During the second phase of the summer internship, students will be collaboratively working in teams collecting data on campus on pre-selected areas of sustainability concern, including renewable energy, biking, green infrastructure and storm water management. This data collection will continue throughout the academic year. Data collected from these projects will directly help inform Georgetown’s campus-wide sustainability efforts and plans.
This internship program is intentionally multi-disciplinary. We are eager to create a diverse pool of 8-12 student interns who bring varied knowledge and experiences from their respective fields of study here at Georgetown. Prior knowledge or experience in sustainability or environmental issues is not required though students should have a genuine and demonstrated commitment to multi-disciplinary learning and collaborative work endeavors.
Please direct questions about the application to Dr. Andria Wisler (akw28) and about the program to Dr. Ali Whitmer (acw39). The deadline of Friday, April 26th is firm. Selected applicants will be asked to interview during the week of April 29th and decisions will be announced shortly thereafter. The application is available via HOYALINK at:
