Why are the two candidates for president unable to find common ground? Are the major political parties so extremely different? Or are we being treated to 'good cop bad cop'? Aren't our representatives in government, and the president sets the tone for all of them, supposed to be working for the common good... doesn't that include freedom of religion, speech etc, like we read in the Constitution? How can there even be an argument about this stuff any more? That was settled back in 1776 or so. Of course they left out the women back then and people who were black... but that was 'reluctantly' eventually corrected. Let's get on with the important work of providing what people need to live; food, shelter and education, in exchange for a 'reasonable' (one day a week), amount of their work life. The problem is our economics, that should be the conversation and that is what needs to be fixed.

Sadly, our good friend and good friend to so many others, Bill Holmberg, died on September 8th. His favorite subject was renewable energy and biomass fuels in particular. He never tired of thinking up new strategies to educate people about these technologies and to expand their use world wide. It is impossible to do the efforts of his lifetime justice. I recently read an interesting piece in the Times Union news paper, which is an Albany, New York paper.  It was written by Moisha K. Blechman and entitled "Capitalism endangers the planet".  In my opinion he accurately documents the economic and environmental challenges and tragedies of our present time.  But it was his final paragraph and sentence that caught my interest.  He postulates that maybe, all the sad symptoms and wars and climate fluctuations, etc, etc are "simply the (results) of the machinery of capitalism".  The planet will be here and life will be here after humans are gone.  The question is: how long do we want to be a species living on Earth?  And what are we going to do about it?
