Subject: FW: 2010 International VSA arts Festival
Dear All,
This is very interesting. You might like to share among your network.

From June 6-12, 2010, VSA arts will bring together artists, educators, researchers, and policy makers with disabilities from around the world for a multicultural celebration of the arts and arts education. Featuring visual, performing, literary, media artists, and a guest list that includes over two thousand participants from all corners of the globe.

Highlights of the Festival’s artistic programming will include: an installation by Dale Chihuly, the innovative glass sculptor; Dame Evelyn Glennie, the Scottish virtuosic percussionist, performing with the world-famous National Symphony Orchestra; the jazz stylings of Diane Schuur; R&B legend Patti LaBelle; an original dance piece titled Diagnosis of a Faun by Tamar Rogoff Dance Company; Last Comic Standing season four winner Josh Blue; the eclectic blues-stylings of New Orleans’ Henry Butler; and famed actors Claire Danes (Romeo + Juliet) and Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God; The L Word). The 2010 International VSA arts Festival will have representation from the across the Globe including: Salif Keita, internationally renowned singer-songwriter from Mali; Australia’s indie rock band, Rudely Interrupted; the U.K.’s Blue-Eyed Soul Dance Company; Brazil’s Forró No Escuro; Japan’s virtuoso violinist Narimichi Kawabata; new plays from Ireland’s Fishamble: The New Play Company; and the Thousand Hand Dance from China’s Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe.

A primary goal of the International Festival is to provide information and effective strategies that can be translated from theory to practice for use in the home, community, or classroom. With this goal in mind, the 2010 International VSA arts Festival will convene an International Education Conference at the downtown Grand Hyatt Washington, June 10–12, 2010. Focusing on three areas—21st -Century Learning, Inclusive Education, and Pathways to Employment—the conference features several notable keynotes including percussionist Evelyn Glennie, Kenneth Eklindh of UNESCO, and noted author and arts educator Sir Ken Robinson.
In addition to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, performances and exhibitions will be showcased at various venues throughout Washington, D.C., including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Discovery Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company (Harman Hall and Lansburgh Theatre), Atlas Performing Arts Center, H Street Playhouse, George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium, Union Station, U.S. Department of Education, DC Improv, and AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center.
