IndiaThe spoilt and stubborn Edwina Esketh, comes to a small town with her husband. She falls in love with an indian doctor, Dr. Safti. She also meets an old friend of hers, the alcoholic Tom Ransome. An awful earthquake is followed by days of rain.

Well, who'da thunk there was a picture in which Lana Turner gave a better performance than Richard Burton? Ladies and gentleman, I present you with The Rains of Ranchipur, a CinemaScope DeLuxe Color remake of 1939's The Rains Came, one of the ur-disaster movies. Lana plays a rich bitch who cheats on her lorded husband Michael Rennie, playing the string of men she encounters like hands of poker. Lana is pretty good at portraying this rapacious character, don't ask me why.

Worth it solely for Lana Turner in technicolor. She is radiant and lovely -- though the film itself leaves much to be desired. The original ('When the Rains Came' with Loy and Power) is a much better rendition.

The first two thirds of The Rains of Ranchipur (remake of The Rains Came) has our main characters (played by Lana Turner and Richard Burton) talking a lot about an affair. We don't really see much of this besides a couple of fairly tame kisses, but we hear about it. A lot.

The original, The Rains Came (1939), is better is every way that matters. I'm a bit baffled by this one. The story seemed watered down, disregarding details of the great interpersonal relationships the first one had. Or maybe just the importance of them, cannot put my finger on it. I'm sure if I laid the two out side by side, I could find some specifics.
