Anybody know where one could get his hands on a mirror-reversed version of a common font such as Arial or Times?

As well as how one would put such a theoretical font on ones system and use it in a stylesheet?

If you only need a few instances it would be rather simple to flip an
image in photoshop or any other graphic editor such as gimp. I do not
know where to find such a font. I do think it would be possible to
make it and load it onto your machine. However, using it in a
stylesheet gives me pause. AFAIK and I could be wrong about this, even
if *you* have it your viewer certainly won't. You might be better off
treating such text as img.

Normally you would be correct, but this if for a very specific intranet application, where I have the theoretical ability (I would have to go through our operations department) to push such a font to all required users.

I did find such fonts here [http://people.smu.edu/jmevius/fonts/]. Now I just need to figure out what to do with them once I download them.

Yes I do, I Google came through at the same time your post did. Now I have a reversed and inverted Arial font to play with. Off to my CSS to see what I can do with them.

The stylesheet question I should think would be rather easy, to access
a specific font you'd use normal syntax...

....
font-family: name of font, otherFont, Arial;
....
unless I'm missing something, this should work, no?

Now, If you're trying to make the text read right to left (like Hebrew
or Arabic), then I'm not sure what to do...is there a right-to-left
setting in CSS?

Yes there is right to left setting in CSS, but it's a poorly supported part of CSS is my understanding.

I tried just what you suggested, which I thought should work as well, but nothing happened. Is there something different about font names and their file names?

I installed the following font files: InvArial.ttf and Revarial.ttf with the windows font widget. But when I tried the following HTML, nothing happened.

<p style="font-family: Arial;">Fonts</p>
<p style="font-family: Revarial;">Fonts</p>
<p style="font-family: InvArial;">Fonts</p>

Is there something else to using unusual fonts in CSS?

I got the fonts installed and working with CSS, I just had to find the "names" of the fonts which apparently have no relationship to the file name of the true type font files.

Unfortunately my experiment determined that to do the silly little trick I am trying to do, I need a font that is both a reversed and inverted version of a stock font. So anybody out there know of any font where somebody has made the letters both backwards and upside down?

Or as an alternate, any freeware font editors that would allow a font novice, such as myself, turn an alphabet of letters upside down and backwards? This project is not important enough to spend money on, so I'm definitely looking for free here.

This has been a peeve of mine for a while. There were several technologies
competing for online font delivery at one time (the one from BitStream
seemed to be most popular and I think is still supported in IE) but then the
whole thing just disappeared.

Stylesheets are great, but there's a gaping whole when it comes to managing
the resources they might need. Why can't I specify a location for a font
file which will be used if the agent can use it and ignored if not? Uh,
why?

I can point to graphics this way (which not all agents can use) so why not
fonts?

If you are still stuck by tomorrow, send me an email (jmiloj at my
gmail account) and I'll build you one if needed. (I've got
Fontographer and a couple other font programs at home).

Just let me know what (free) font you want to base it one, and what
variants you need.

(I may not be able to get to it till Monday, but I'll try to get it
done this weekend)
