Man faints, dies after seeing epidural

Thu Jul 7, 7:03 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California woman is suing a hospital for
wrongful death because her husband fainted and suffered a fatal injury
after helping delivery room staff give her a pain-killing injection.

------------------------

I mean, it was an unfortunate accident, but I really don't see where the
hospital is to blame in any way...

ok if my husband dies at the birth of our child i would be just a
little bit upset.
who is going to help raise the child?
i do think the hospital is a little responsible.

got to suck to go home to an empty house with a new baby after that...

How is the hospital responsible? In what way?

I agree with you that it sucks for the family - that was never in doubt.
The child doesn't have a dad, the mom doesn't have a husband, etc. I
just don't see where the hospital is responsible. The guy passed out at
the sight of a needle. How is that the hospital's fault? I could see
if they knew what his reaction was going to be, and didn't plan for it,
but there was no mention of that in there at all.

The same thing might have happened to him where he works... if he
happened to see something he didn't like and let himself get worked up
about it and feint over it and hit his head on ... a hand-cart in a
loading-dock for instance... even though the loading dock might not be
considered an "unsafe work environment". I wouldn't expect to sue the
hospital any more than I would expect to sue his employer in the
alternate scenario. So I think, the real moral of the story is, don't
be a pussy who feints at the sight of anything that's unusual to you
and you won't sustain unnecessary falling injuries (which are usually
trivial).

It was a matter of time. If seeing the epidural go in was enough to
make him faint, imagine what would have happened once the OB showed him
the placenta.

While it's proabbly foreseeable that some new father at some point
will faint, the severity of the injury sounds rather like a freak
acident. He hit his head on something aluminim???? What's his head
made of? But ya, seems to me that if the hospital was negligent at all
it would be in his subsequent treatment, not in asking him to help.

Anyway, what's she doing getting an epidural? Wimp.

My brother-in-law, at the birth of his second child, watched the
epidural procedure, against the advice of the doctor and my sister.

He fainted and hit his head on a stool (that he'd been sitting on earlier).

Cut his forehead pretty badly...

so, it does happen.

If the law suit is entirely around the fainting, I agree the hospital have little liability in my eyes. But I wonder if any of it relates to the treatment of him after the fall. Did they not take the head injury serious enough soon enough to increase his chance of survival. Or did they just say, "It is a bump on his head, like here in this gurney for awhile." And then not pay any attention until it was too late.

Really? That's so odd - I watched both my wife's epidurals, and not
only was there not any blood or anything that could imagine would induce
fainting (well, ok, there was the huge needle), but it was really
interesting to see the procedure. Of course, once the nurses figured
out I wasn't the fainting type, they asked me to put on a gown and
gloves and wash up and they let me fetch things and help out a little.
It was quite the experience.

They also said you'd be surprised how many husbands faint or feel faint
at some point in the process - at least half.

Watching an epidural didn't get to me. Watching an episiotomy did
though. It's funny. I've dealt okay with body gore from injury, but
when it's medical/cosmetic it just gets to me.

At least at Mass General (we had both kids there) the husbands are not
allowed to watch the epidural - it's considered a sterile procedure. I had
to leave the room.

Now the episiotomy they let me watch. Apparently that's can get as filthy
as you like.

Weird, huh?

makes sense actually. Spinal fluid is not normally exposed to room
bacteria whereas the mucous membranes not only are, they are adapted
to cope this them.

I dunno... that just sounds creepy... you're in the hospital waiting
for a friend to get out of the delivery room and some guy with a
boner's pacing back and forth in the hall, wringing his hands. :)

I'm available if you need any help (although thinking of you in the
hallway with a "stiff one" is a little creepy)

Uhm... If you're in the hallway with a stiff one.... who's knockin' up your wife AND wouldn't knockin' up your wife yourself be a means to relieve yourself of said stiff one?

i can watch the most messed up horror movie or video game, but show me
a sceane from one of those tv show hospital rooms, even baby stuff, i

Unless your wife ends up having a c-section - there's a whole lot of
time in the labor/delivery room that doesn't involve massive blood
loss. (There's no difference between labor and delivery rooms around
here, so YMMV.) And, it's not like you have to look at it, you know.
You could be at the head of the bed holding her hand while she
delivers and I'd imagine the view would be relatively sanitary.

But, of course, I should just say, buck the fuck up, little man. Cause
whatever you're feeling - it ain't nothing compared to what wifey is
going through.

Then again, of course, he did say "when I knock up my wife", so
technically, I'm thinking the logistics of that sound puzzling... I
mean... I've heard of some big guys, but to be big enough to be in the
hallway at the time, I'd think you'd have trouble in your day-to-day
life, you know, getting through doorways would be a challenge.

You might consider trying to find a good hypnotherapist to help with
that... Or just read more about the implications of "string theory".

Oh that's the one where the Dr. cuts her and sews her back up because
the Dr's. either an idiot, in too much of a hurry or a mysogynistic
