Yeah, that's why I said they probably don't fit the category.

On a side note -- I'd be interested to see how many songs folks on the
list can dredge up which have religious references or themes that are
outside of the judeo-christian ethos ... Barring generic,
non-denominational themes (which are sort of assumed to be sung by
Christian artists in most cases) and barring (folk) hymns -- secular
music, so Hari-Krishna doesn't count. I'm looking for secular tunes
that mention things like Buddha, Apolo, Odin, Legbha, Anansi, Shiva,
Osiris, Tyr Na Nog (sp?), the Vedas or the Green Man. It occurs to me
that I can name more fo the Greeks than any of the other ethos, but I
don't want to put out a complete list here, just examples... Anansi is
a little known african spider god for instance. Avalon would be
acceptable in spite of the fact that Arthurian legends are very
Christian oriented because Avalon as I understand it was not a
Christian myth. (Muslim is sort of out of the equation just because
they place too many restrictions on their music for it to be popular.)
When I think about this I want to jump immediately to Cat Stevens
because he had an album titled Buddha and the Chocolate Box, but I
can't think of any actual song he recorded with the name Buddha in it.

A Cold Wind To Valhalla - Jethro Tull
Xanadu - don't know (don't care for it, but...)
the Rebel Jesus - Jackson Browne (I think -- see below I know he at
least calls himself a pagan)
Jesus - Cat Stevens (oddly enough -- see the second verse below)

They called him Gautama Buddha
Oh long time ago
He turned the world to order
Don't you know
He used to sit knowing
Oh long time ago
Where you and me were going
And in the evening his love will lead the blind

Green may qualify, depending on how you define religion...

Solstice Bells is actually on their Christmas album too... which is
why I left it out... but yeah, and Dana mentioned Jack in the Green...
which qualifies again dependent on your definition of religion - the
Jacks (i.e. Jack Frost as later diluted) are a part of the earlier
mythos from that region, so I guess if I'm including something as
obscure as Anansi I can't then disclude the Jacks.

Are Songs From the Wood and Velvet Green religious in nature?

I didn't get that impression from Fires at Midnight either although
it's one of my favorite songs.

Velvet Green has references to traditions in rural England and Songs
from the wood is more of a song about story telling. I'll have to
listen to them to make sure.

Well there's definately a Christian reference in it... although that
doesn't necessarily preclude a pre-christian reference:

I am the wind to fill your sail.
I am the cross to take your nail:
A singer of these ageless times.

Though Cup Of Wonder (on the same album iirc) has very definate
pre-christian references to Beltane and the chalice (my personal
favorite religious symbol from that region, which was later
appropriated as communion).

I think the Mummer's Dance also falls into this category... and iirc
Clannad recorded a song about the Horned One (who's been later
appropriated as modern depictions of Satan - which as I understand it
isn't what the character originally represented). Wish I could
remember the name of the song... they probably have recorded others --
and likely so has Loreena McKennit -- I know she's made secular
recordings of some other traditional celtic songs.

ya... we have a couple of her CDs. There is one in particular, hmm,
found the lyrics...

When the dark wood fell before me
And all the paths were overgrown
When the priests of pride say there is no other way
I tilled the sorrows of stone

I did not believe because I could not see
Though you came to me in the night
When the dawn seemed forever lost
You showed me your love in the light of the stars

Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
Please remember me

Then the mountain rose before me
By the deep well of desire
From the fountain of forgiveness
Beyond the ice and fire

Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
Please remember me

Though we share this humble path, alone
How fragile is the heart
Oh give these clay feet wings to fly
To touch the face of the stars

Breathe life into this feeble heart
Lift this mortal veil of fear
Take these crumbled hopes, etched with tears
We'll rise above these earthly cares

Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
Please remember me
Please remember me

Dante's Prayer -- Loreena McKenitt

Cool, thanks for the lyrics...

Oh... Kyrie by Mister Mister ... I looked it up online and found
christian references, but it's odd and I have a strange feeling it has
pre-christian roots.

The wind blows hard against this mountainsiae
Across the sea into my soul.
It reaches into where I cannot hide
Setting my feet upon the road.

Kyrie eleison - down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison - through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison - where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie eleison - on a highway in the light.

My heart is old it holds my memories
My body burns a gemlike flame.
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine
Is where I find myself again.

Kyrie eleison - down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison - through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison - where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie eleison - on a highway in the light.

When I was young I thought of growing old
Of what my life would mean to me.
Would I have followed down my chosen road
Or only wished what I could be?

Kyrie Eleison (Greek for "Lord have mercy"; the Latin transliteration
supposes a pronunciation as in Modern Greek) is a very old, even
pre-Christian, expression used constantly in all Christian liturgies.
Arrian quotes it in the second century:
