It's an awful thing. I'm chatting right now with people I know in
London. Hopefully people on this list are okay. Fortunately, the
reported scale of damage and casualties has been steadily dropping as
more information comes in.

Yes, I've heard 2 confirmed dead and 300 injured. London,
unfortunately, has lots of experience with this via the IRA in the 70s
and 80s. Consequently they have security cameras all over downtown
London and hopefully this will help find the bombers.

The London response teams look very prepared and well trained.

You want to talk FUD?

Some years ago I was in Costa Rica (school trip oddly enough) when the
big earthquake hit the oposite coast. The newspapers reported the
absolute, maximum number of people killed in the earthquake every day.
The first day it was 2 people -- no more than 2 people, everyone else
was accounted for, there would be no other boddies found. Whudaya know
the next day it was 14... but that was ABSOLUTELY it, everyone else
was accuonted for, they wouldn't find any more bodies... Whuddaya know
the next day it was 20 or 30 someodd... but there was ABSOLUTELY NO
WAY they were going to find any more boddies... Ultimately I think the
death toll from that earthquake ended up being somewhere between 50
and 100.

Al Qaeda bombed some trains in Spain, and the government promptly gave in to
their demands and pulled out of Iraq. I said at the time, no matter what you
felt about the war, this was a VERY dangerous precedent being set. Sadly, it
was a matter of time before the same attack was employed somewhere else.

You simply cannot give in to terrorrist's demands.

I agree as did most of the world back in 2001. We had the world ready
to support an anti-terrorist campaign that could have knocked these
idiots out. We could have tracked them down and killed or captured the
vast majority of them. Instead bush opted to invade Iraq and turn the
world against us. Hopefully this will re-ignite the anti-terrorist
campaign and get the focus in the right area this time.

So much for the honey pot theory of getting involved in Iraq.

The problem now is that all these foreign fighters who have survived
are now highly trained in urban terrorism and gurilla operations.
Things are now going to get a lot worse as they go back to their
countries of residence and apply what they've learned.

Well, tactically, Iraq and major western cities are totally different
environments so I don't think their urban tactics are a worry (yet).
However, Iraq is helping to attract and then develop psychos into
battle experienced leaders that will be exported. For example, Carlos
the Jackal.

As I've said before, you can't rid the world of pests with a local
attractant - it just kills the dumb ones. The smart ones get that
much more clever and go train others.

It has nothing to do with cowardice. It is a simple matter of economics: standing up and fighting has a significantly lower ROI then terrorism.

In my mind it has everything to do with cowardice, the only ROI in terrorism is involving people that have nothing to do with your particular beef.

There is *some* honor (more honor in finding a peaceful solution)in two sides meeting on the field of battle and slugging it out. There is none in planting a bomb in a train station and running away to set it off remotely.

The former, you're a warrior, a freedom fighter etc. The latter, you're a criminal, a murderer, and a coward.

I don't want to stir up a shitstorm with these statements, it's my personal gut-reaction opinion and nothing more or less.

I've been watching CNN for an hour. Al-Queda has NOT taken
responsibility for this attack.

There are a lot of groups that have a similar name and who have
adopted A-Queda as a part of their name. In this case, the exact
English name of the group that has claimed responsibility has never
been heard of before and the attempt to take credit is not considered
credible.

Again with the blaming Al Qaeda. The official findings are that the
evidence points to a group "associated with Al Qaeda." I'm "associated
with" all of you. "Associated with" means basically nothing. I'm not
saying that Al Qaeda isn't bad; I'm just saying that you should be
accurate when laying blame.

One thing that people fail to take into account with terrorists is
that their biggest demand, even if unstated, is "Pay attention to us."
Whatever group did this has probably already achieved their goals
without even listing any demands. They have our attention. They want
us to say that we aren't going to give into their demands because not
only are we paying attention, but we are actively refusing to fix
something that might actually be a problem. They give us a reason to
actively refuse to fix a possibly legitimate problem and our refusal
to fix it gives them the ammunition to recruit more members. In some
cases it encourages us to invade some foreign country killing innocent
people, giving them more ammunition for recruiting members.

This is about one group's attempt to get power, not about achieving
their stated demands.

"associated with Al Qaeda" is all there is to being Al Qaeda. The
organization itself, is not even an organization. To use the tactics of, to
draw inspiration from, and carry out acts in the name of, Al Qaeda....is to
BE Al Qaeda.

It's a name that has come to mean a common set of terrorist ideals. Whether
you are sporting an Al Qaeda badge, or whether you've endured some induction
ceremony, is not nearly as important as whether you share their ideals and
intentions.

But you are exactly right in your last sentence. They are out to achieve
power, not demands. If we left Iraq, terrorists wouldn't disappear. If
Israel picked up and moved to Saturn, terrorists wouldn't disappear. If we
built each Palestinian a house made of solid gold, terrorists wouldn't
disappear....etc etc...

No, there are not a few safe conclusions that you can draw from that.
I've already seen a 20 minute dissertation on that not only is that
group not Al Qaeda, but that this does not have the telltale signs of
an Al Qaeda attack.

If you commit fraud, does that mean that Martha Stewart did it?

group not Al Qaeda, but that this does not have the telltale signs of
an Al Qaeda attack.

If you commit fraud, does that mean that Martha Stewart did it?

OK, well then let's prosecute Jodie Foster for the attempted
assassination of Ronald Reagan. I mean, it was done in her name. By
your logic John Hinkley IS Jodie Foster.

Nobody wants a shitstorm. But once you are past that initial gut-reaction, it is a good idea to take a step back and try to look at the subject objectively. If we want to convince them to use other tactics, we have to get the ROI of terrorism down.

Your loosing sight of the fact that Al-Qaeda's beef isn't just with the US, it's with the whole of Western Civilization, the people in the London Tube had nothing to do with the US military, nor had anything to do with anything other than their own lives.

Al Qaeda isn't any organized army, representing a particular country or countries, they're a criminal enterprise, there's nothing legal or justified about what they do.

Okay to get pedantic a "criminal enterprise" would be something that
is in the business of, thus makes money by, breaking the law. My
understanding of their purposes is not monetary but political. It's
one-half of why they specifically are terrorists and not just
criminals.

Well McCain seems to disagree with you.

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2005/7/7/141722.shtml

Thursday, July 7, 2005 1:55 p.m. EDT
John McCain: We Must Take the Fight to the Enemy

"You've got to go where they're bred, and that happens to be in these
madrassahs that are funded by the Saudis, where the [terrorists] are
taught to hate and destroy the West and everything we stand for.

"We've got to go where these terrorists breed ... in the Middle East,
with the followers of extreme Islamic fundamentalism.

"We can take preventive measures, but the best way to prevent these
attacks is to go after them where they breed."

McCain also defended current U.S. foreign policy that is pushing
democracy all over the world, saying, "Repressive and oppressive
governments also provide the incentives for this kind of extremism and
that's why we're fighting hard for Democracy in the Middle East,
whether it be in Egypt or Iraq or any of these other Middle Eastern
countries - that's why Afghanistan was so important."

McCain also doesn't believe the convoluted notion that we are somehow
creating more terrorists by fighting them.

"These people were bent on our destruction [before] September 11 ...
we had not had a war in Iraq at that time. ... It's clear that there
is a breeding ground of radical Islamic extremism that predates
anything the U.S. has done."

He added, "If you believe that Iraq is a breeding ground, then we
should do everything we can to further the process of democracy and
stability in Iraq."

Did you read that? Iraq was not a breeding ground for terrorism,
Afghanistan was. Further it's the Saudis, Syrians, and Iranians that
are breeding grounds for "radical Islamic extremism". Hussein was
secular.

Nowhere does he say that if we plop an Army in the Middle East we can
rid the world of terrorism. Further I'd say that no matter what Mr.
McCain says, the London attack proves I'm right.

Unfortunately it's only a matter of time before I'm proven right again
in America.

Mr. McCain is pointing out that we need to fight terrorists where
they're bred; his so-called "breeding grounds for radical Islamic
extremism". Iraq was not one of these breeding grounds.

By invading it, the US has destroyed not a breeding ground, but
created a terrorist training camp many times better than the ones that
existed in Afghanistan. You see, Afghanistan was BOTH a training
ground AND a breeding ground.

Iraq, on the other hand, was neither to any significant degree. How
many Iraqis attacked the US prior to invasion? Zero. How many
Saudis? 15. So where's the breeding ground?

This is why plopping an Army into Iraq and thinking we can exterminate
the terrorists is flawed: the breeding grounds still exist!

As I've said, you can't rid yourself of pests without destroying the
hive and hive is not and was not Iraq: it's Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria,
Pakistan, et al. If you want apples go to the tree.

BTW - I'll bet dollars to donuts that if they catch London bombers
that not a single one is Iraqi. The "draw them out" policy is utterly
false.

A quibble point Gruss - Iraqi forces before the invasion attacked US
and coalition forces on a regular basis. Remember since the first Gulf
War Iraq had 2 very large no-fly zone patrolled by US and coalition
aircraft. The Iraqi army regularly tried to shoot them down, usually
resulting in an Iraqi anti-aircraft missle or battery, or an electric
plant being bombed by US forces.

He he. That's funny especially since I'm in a kooky mood. It reminds
me of 2 things:

1.) Everybody Love Raymond: Marie to Robert's father-in-law, "Have a
muffin." FiL: "Oh, no thank you, I don't eat muffins."

2.) Friends: Alec Baldwin to Phoebe: "The brake lights [in the traffic
jam] were beautiful! It was like the twinkling of a 1000 fairies..."

As do you since you used the word perpetrate. Bestiality seriously

Touche, Sir Lyons.

However I would add that this was not terrorism and it was as directed
by Mr. Hussein; something not unexpected after the first Gulf War.
That is, while true, this point is unrelated to terrorism.

I had to include as much as possible. Liberal for almost everyone on the
list, Republican for Sam, Polyamorous for you, homosexual for... I don't
know who, but somebody, wife killing for Gruss :-)

Now that I'm convinced, who's up for an orgy tonight? I already called Karl
Rove, he said he'll be there, as well as Mike Schiavo with his in-laws.

I think it's funny that people are so averse to it... It's not my
thing, I just always figured that, I guess unless you were feeding
Viagra to your dog, you couldn't mistake an erection for something
other than consent. :P

But I guess, if we were to limit it to "beasts" that can speak English
and give informed consent, I've heard that cockatoos are pretty
intelligent. The name is fitting, although the logistics are puzzling.
:P

Sorry Jen, I just couldn't pass up on these jokes. :)

We can't attack every country that has terrorists can we? I'm not
saying this is a perfect plan, far from it, but it's our best
available option.
Iraq had offered and provided sanctuary for terrorist as well as
training camps.

As I said it was a quibble point. However I can understand why Hussein
would order his forces into such engagements - Iraqis considered the
no-fly zone to be a violation of the country's sovereignty.

Not sure why he would have to be straight... actually statistically a
gay male is more likely to give consent -- but then, with a gay male
it may not be informed. :P

You're really stretching it by claiming that there were many terrorist
groups pre invasion. Ansar Al Islam and the other terrorist groups,
like the Kurdish People's Party, that were in Iraq before the invasion
were all clustered in the US controlled sections of northern Iraq. So
we are going to invade ourselves next?

Where were the camps? You're making some claims that are simply not
supported by the facts.

for their son's 16th birthday party and were sentenced to two years
probation.

Landon and Anette Pharris, who were charged with contributing the
delinquency of a minor, also were ordered to take parenting classes.

The parents hired the stripper to perform at a September party attended by
about a dozen young people.

Cassandra Joyce Park, 29, who police say used the stage name "Sassy," danced
for a few hours before partygoers took up a collection and paid her $150
more to fully disrobe, Anette Pharris said.

The stripper and the man she was with were also granted probation.

Police were tipped off to the party by a photo developer at a drug store who
saw pictures of the occasion.

Pharris said after being arrested that she tried to do something special for
her son.

"We even had grandpa there," she said.
