Dear Guillermo Arduino,
Hereby, Azerbaijani community in the Czech Republic would like to thank you for your report entitled “Azerbaijan Reporter Remembered” devoted to Chingiz Mustafayev, prominent journalist and national hero of Azerbaijan.
Chingiz is truly National Hero of Azerbaijan. Indeed it was Chingiz who broke through information blockade which Azerbaijan found itself in after the war broke out with neighboring Armenia over Nagorno Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. There was hardly a battlefront that Chingiz didn't cover. His legacy provides evidence of the atrocities of this war and the most appalling example of such kind of brutality is massacre perpetrated in Azeri town of Khojaly. In fact the world became to know him through his film on Khojaly.
Massacre in Khojaly, where 613 innocent civilians were brutally killed, was committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a group of people on the basis of their national origin. As such it is genocide, as described in 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
We believe that if we fail to punish those responsible for the Khojaly Genocide, similar brutality might recur in the future. In this regard, we thank CNN for the report as a valuable contribution to raising world community’s awareness about atrocities occurred in Khojaly, which is significant step towards just assessment of this crime that will help prevent future genocides.
