Fanaa is a 2006 Hindi-language romantic thriller film, directed by Kunal Kohli and produced by Aditya Chopra and Yash Chopra under their banner Yash Raj Films. The film stars Aamir Khan and Kajol, with Rishi Kapoor, Kirron Kher, Tabu and Sharat Saxena in supporting roles. The film's title is derived from the Islamic Sufi term "fanaa", meaning "destroyed" in Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and Hindi. The film was promoted with the tagline "Destroyed In Love..."
The film follows the story of Zooni Ali Beg (Kajol), a blind Kashmiri woman who travels to New Delhi with her friends to perform in a ceremony for Republic Day. There she meets Rehan Khan (Aamir Khan), a tour guide and a flirtatious charmer. Zooni falls in love with Rehan, despite her friends' warnings. Rehan shows her the city and the joys of life, and promises her that he will help her get an eye surgery to restore her vision. However, Zooni does not know that Rehan has another side to his life - he is actually a Kashmiri insurgent and a mastermind behind several terrorist attacks. He is also on a mission to detonate a nuclear bomb in the city.
The film has a twist when Zooni undergoes the surgery and regains her sight, only to find out that Rehan has been killed in a bomb blast. She is heartbroken and returns to Kashmir with her parents. Seven years later, she lives happily with her son, who is Rehan's child. However, fate brings her face to face with Rehan again, who is alive and has infiltrated Kashmir as part of his mission. He does not recognize Zooni, but she recognizes him. She is shocked and conflicted by his true identity and his role in the violence that has plagued her homeland. She has to choose between love and loyalty, between Rehan and her son.
The film was one of the most expensive Bollywood films during its time of release. It was also one of the highest grossing films of 2006, earning over 1.03 billion at the box office against a production and marketing budget of 300 million. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised its direction, soundtrack, cinematography, costumes, styling and performances of the cast, especially Kajol's portrayal of Zooni. The film also won several awards, including three Filmfare Awards for Best Actress (Kajol), Best Lyricist (Prasoon Joshi) and Best Female Playback Singer (Sunidhi Chauhan).
