The Mars Hill University Band program provides professional training for both music majors and non-majors alike. The MHU Wind Symphony is the premiere instrumental ensemble on campus. The Mountain Lion Marching Band, under the direction of Dr. J.T. Womack and Dr. Brian Tinkel, contributes to an exciting gameday environment at all Lions home football games.

The ensembles provide high-level artistic experiences for our students and audiences through engaging programming and performances. Our ensembles successfully prepare the next generation of professional musicians and accomplished music educators, while also providing performance opportunities for interested non-music-majors.

Music majors who have participated in the MHU Bands have gone on to have successful careers as notable music educators throughout the country, completed graduate study at prestigious conservatories and schools of music throughout the country, perform professionally, and hold positions at colleges and universities. Non-majors use the skills and experiences they gained in college band to impact their leadership and professional success on a daily basis.

To foster artistic experiences of the highest level that inspire, build community, celebrate diversity, and develop exceptional musicians through engaging and representative programming that connects our students and audiences while serving as a resource to local music educators and school band programs.

The Mars Hill University Wind Symphony is the principal instrumental ensemble in the Department of Music. The Wind Symphony performs concerts both on and off campus and on an annual concert tour. The ensemble has a notable performance history and has been featured at conferences of the North Carolina Music Educators Association and the College Band Directors National Association Southern Division.

The MHU Wind Symphony performs a wide array of compositions from standard wind repertoire and transcriptions to a variety of contemporary and representative works, including commissions and world premieres.

The Mountain Lion Marching Band is the sound behind the MHU Lions football gameday experience. In addition to performing at all home football games, the MLMB occasionally performs on tour and in exhibition.

The MLMB is a fun and exciting performance opportunity that brings energy to Meares Stadium while providing unique experiences for our students. Ours shows connect with the audience through unexpected, fun, and entertaining ways that redefine what a college marching band can be.

A unique component of the MLMB is the focus on student leadership, student teaching, and a focus on developing successful music educators. Students are provided ample opportunities to work behind the scenes to develop the band, including assisting with design and instruction. Involvement and leadership at this level is a critical component in teaching future music teachers and is an important mission to our commitment to experiential learning within the Mars Hill Bands.

The MLMB is family that is there for you before you even arrive on campus! We have a culture of caring and commitment to each other. This means we welcome students of all backgrounds who seek to be a part of organization greater than any one person.

Detail defines excellence and our commitment to each other and the band ensures we perform at the highest level. Our approach provides a show experience and gameday atmosphere unique to any other college around. For music education majors, the hands-on learning opportunities are second-to-none when learning to teach and run a marching band. We embrace the experiential nature of a liberal arts campus like Mars Hill.

In the first episode of my marching band story here, ( @jaimusic/urban-pulse-undefeated-my-marching-band-story), I explained how my senior year won first place in all our competitions, giving my marching band an undefeated season, and also the best end to my marching band life in high school....

But then a month after our season ended, our high school band director got an invitation from the people who were in charge of the 2014 Superbowl Halftime show. Somehow, they learned of our undefeated season and recognition in the state of New Jersey, and they loved what we were doing with the program. They loved it so much in fact, that they invited our undefeated marching band to participate in the halftime show with Bruno Mars that year! It was a once in a life time opportunity that we couldn't pass off. Thus we began preparations for our last performance on the field.

My high school marching band and I are gonna perform with Bruno Mars, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and a couple other high school marching bands in the state of New Jersey. They prepared everything for us. The drill (our performance steps in the field) that we had to learn, the uniforms that we would wear, our communication radios, etc. All we had to do was learn the show and we would be golden. And God has been fortunate on me to also give me my position in the field. My point was almost in front of the stage where Bruno Mars would be performing. And in one part of the show where he would be at the drumset, I was almost next to it... I was 5 feet away from Bruno Mars each rehearsal, and even at the live performance.
Now I'm not a huge fan of Bruno Mars, but I know his music. And to be just real close to a well-known pop musician like him is a really awesome experience to have.

This would be the last show on the field for me and my fellow senior classmates of the 2013-2014 undefeated season. This was a great way to end this campaign.

This photo is of half of our entire marching band.

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the rehearsals or inside the stadium and practices because we weren't allowed to bring any phones or cameras. But there's a video online that shows our performance on the field that you can't see from the official halftime show livestream. Check it out!
This video is from youtuber "knlutton".

This is awesome! What an amazing experience! I was in the color guard in Highschool and LOVED marching band. Now my son attends my alma mater and is in the marching band playing in the drumline! Thanks for sharing! :)

Holst's Mars arranged for marching band. This short, fanfare-like setting of a classic in marching band literature will surely become a favorite for your students. It even features two(2) "pick-a-note" sections.

Gehlen Catholic School marching band students, from grades seven - 12, were able to participate in the Dec. 28th Holiday Bowl, in San Diego, as well as the Holiday Bowl held earlier in the day. Gehlen ninth grader Danielle Tesch and seventh grader Tessa Ruden were among the students.

Le Mars, Iowa Gehlen Catholic School marching band member spent three years to raise money to attend and perform at Dec. 28's Holiday Bowl, in San Diego. Evan Steeg (left), Addison Kramer, Samantha Zubrod, Ellie Arens, Sophie Ruden, Addison Arens and Nolan Nilles were among the participating students.

"We did everything from covering silage piles to hosting 'Meats and Sweets' sales to raise the money," Gehlen fifth - 12th grade instrumental director Nathan Klaumann said. "It literally took us three years to pay for 30 kids and eight chaperones to go to the Holiday Bowl."

"Most of these students will not get another change to perform at halftime of a major college football games with other musicians their own age," he said. "Being able to share an experience like this with some of your closest friends is a once-in-lifetime adventure."
