Chandy's Jottings –Feb.15, 2009. Friendship while  traveling. Part -2.

At the outset, let me have my reply to part 1 dated 30, Jan, 2009.

Kutty 'gaaru'  complained that it ended up in anti climax. BKP stated that I bluff and TJ commented with sarcasm. PKM came to my rescue. Once bitten twice shy, I am immune to all temptations after 'Lola' episode. I am not for any old age adventures.

This jotting is particularly for TJ, Kayani San, & all ex-KSEB guys.

While traveling I am very selective to smile or talk. At times, I come across prominent people . Once, PP Mukundan,  BJP State Secretary was on my adjacent seat. We had a long chat. I found him amicable and moderate. Since we knew that we are not in the same boat, our friendship ended up with the end of the journey.

For TJ & Kayani,

During Christmas eve, my fellow traveler was Prof. Sebastian , retired from the Dept. of English, SB: College, Changanasserry. He was colleague of  Sunny ( Ammalu kutty Murder, 'Bharya' cinema, 'Periyare, Parwatha Nirayude Panineere……' ), your Augustine 'Saar',  Prof. MP Paul.& Prof. Shepherd and my uncle KJ Oommen who left for Planning Commission etc.[When Sunny was at Pooja Pura jail, my uncle visited Poojapura jail, as a member of the 'ThekChand' Committee on Prohibition'. The 'Mulakath' was unexpected and dramatic. Both wept. Sunny told my uncle about his innocence. Sunny came out of the jail after his life term. Then I saw him at Tiruvalla station. He is no more.]

Prof. Sebastian  talked high about MP Paul. Paul started the 'Shakespeare Drama' Club at the college, the first and the only one of its kind in Kerala  and it still continues. He mentioned that his favorite drama was 'King Leer'. To my pleasant surprise, he revealed that my cousin, John Sankaramangalam, was acting as 'Cordele'  one of the three daughters of King Leer [ John Sankaramangalam is the 'Guru' of many big shots in the film industry, since he was the Prof. at Pune Film Institute. He directed a couple of films. At present, he is the Principal of the 'Institute of Mass Communications' and based at TVM. When I met his ailing eldest sister at Tiruvalla, she confirmed and said with an air of pride, 'Johnnychan was very handsome and he didn't act, but lived as 'Cordele'. Nobody could substitute him'. ( She didn't know about that fair chap from Niranam, who was a better substitute for JS as Cordele. O, George , I leave it to the imagination of the readers; If TJ, volunteers to act as 'Cordele' with his present body built!!!!'. )]

Then our talk focused on Prof. Shepherd. TJ is wrong. Shepherd was not from Scotland, he was an Anglo-Indian from Madras. As replacement of MP Paul, Shepherd was brought from Presidency College, Madras.( It is true , there was a Shepherd from Scotland, famous for Grammar Books.) In the bad company of Sunny, he became addicted to drinks. He became a liability to SB. Then he found asylum at Devamatha College, Calicut. His addiction to drinking continued. His family disowned him and he got separated from his wife. The end came as mentioned by TJ. A dead Prof. Shepherd was found leaning towards the front seat at the end of a KSRTC bus trip. But the end was natural. That was the pathetic end of a GENIUS.

For KSEB guys.

During my last return trip from Kerala, a gentle man, with trimmed  beard,  got in from Alwaye and sat in front of me. I could recognize him as the man of 'BHOOMI GEETHAM' program from Kairali TV. Only from the talk, I came to know him as Mr. Sidhartha Menon, the ex Chairman of KSEB during 2000. He knows each and every KSEB guys of CET67. He told that he had closer interaction with Kutty. When I mentioned about Roy Cha, he had a hearty laugh. He knows Roy Cha better than all of us. Roy Cha: It is an open call. Better come out and have an open confession about your adventures. Else, this Chandy is forced to due some CBI work.

I was fascinated with his humility, simplicity and mannerism. He got down at Trichur.

He wanted to convey his affection to all KSEB guys like S Nair, TN Sasikumar, AKN and others.

Unlike, that Poona walhee's  friendship,  the above mentioned two friendships are worth continuing.

Hello Chandicha,

It is nice to read history of people you know from memories of others
you come across. Quite nostalgic. Thanks for jotting down such things
which I value a lot.

About Shepherd Sir, my memory still says he was from UK. His accent,
complexion, his dressing (always in suit with a tie), etc were all
pointing to that - but I have no argument if he really was an Anglo
from Madras! He did his role well. He did write English Grammar
books. I bought 2 from him. Those were at my Niranam house till our
property was sold off in 1989 and all stuff went astray.

About Shepherd sir getting spoiled by Sunny, I have no idea.
Ammalukutty was killed in 1960 when we were in SSLC and since then
Sunny was in hiding, jail, or on parole, back to life imprisonment,
etc. I have never heard of Shepherd sir being in his company. Shepherd
sir was in SB for more years after we left in 1962. So his mixing with
Sunny in those years seem to be not very logical. If he was in Sunny's
company it could have been before the murder. But during our SB days,
we never have had heard or seen anything adverse in Shepherd sir.
What you heard about could be right or wrong - but he was a decent
and good teacher. SB college would not have thrown him out. What KT
wrote is most likely. Fr Theodosius could not have hand picked a
wayward professor for his college. (Sunny, if you recall had his
tutorial college in a multistoried building with name "KC Mathew" at
Tiruvalla S.C. Junction on M.C. Road. That building belonged to my
father -in -law till recently when Sky Jewelers bought it. After
Sunny's incident Namboothiri took it on rent and was conducting
Namboothiri's Parallel college in that premises till the property was
sold.)

BKP is right. Well known Prof MP Paul was the father of Thankam and
her well known sisters, writer Rosy Thomas, Lucy Paul, Shanta and a
good friend of mine Vincy who was with Levers for long now owning an
industry in Navin Mumbai. MP Paul would not be forgotten by the
communists or forgiven by the Catholic institution as he had his
ideals and had full command on his pen and tongue. Chandichan and
Nanma are related to them!!!

I really love reading such old anecdotes and real life stories.
Friends, do contribute such stuff as often as you can.

Regards to all, TJ

It is 'King Lear', Chandycha, not 'King Leer'. 'Leer' means something else. For example, 'Smiling at a lady is all right, but not leering at her'.

Chandiji,
Your narration on the chat you had with Sidhartha Menon
brings to me lot of memories. We are very good friends.
During 94-96 period we were working together in the
Brahmapuram Diesel power project. In this connection
we had to travel together several times to New Delhi,
Bangalore,Mumbai and once to Paris and Amsterdam.
While I was working in the materials management dept
of KSEB,he was Board member and later Chairman.
He gave me a free hand in all matters. This was unbeliveable
to some others,as he was the founder President of
Officers' Association(a CPI M organisation) and I was
not a member of this association.
Incidently,he is the brother of Smt Savithri Lekshmanan
Congress leader

Kutty

PS- T.N.Sasi kumar will be able to give a full account
of the adventures of Roychan

Muthalali,

Thanks for the correction.

Paulocha,

You are the worthy son of late Prof. KP Mathai, the distinguished Professor of English at the 'University College, TVM'.

Hope you didn't leer(a lascivious or sly look) at a girl as the disciplined son of your father with discipline.

Your 'leer' reminded me about my jottings on Sarah Palin.

[I mentioned 'Pak.PM, Zardari drooled and swooned on seeing Palin. Fatwa against  Zardari for his 'flirtatious' remarks to non- Muslim lady']

Welcome. You corrected me a couple of times in the past.

Sushil Da You too corrected me in the past.

I wonder  ;Why? No body takes the pain to correct Bijoy da!!

I am happy .I could break the ice.

I have arrived at the hypothesis

'For interactive mails, one should make mistakes deliberately or inadvertently'

TJ,

Thanks for the response. But you didn't react to my comment about your scope to act a Cordele , the beautiful princess of King Lear.

Your silence is taken as a positive gesture. I request Pauloachan to take the double role of 'King Lear' and the ;Choreographer to enact a scene with TJ at G2G09.

Nambudiri mentioned by TJ was VPP Nambudiri. He .hailed from the Numero Uno Bramhin family of Tiruvalla. They had elephants. I studied at their High School. He was our MLA when Pattom was the CM. In my Page ;'What is in a name Part 2', I mentioned about one Satish (Krishan Nambudiri). He is his nephew. The Tutorial College was bought by my nephew. He retains the name, 'Nambudiri's College' for the GOOWILL.

Kutty 'Gaaru',

Roy Cha is not responding. It seems ; he is a bit scared. Let us wait and see, before learning from 'Scooter' Sasi.

Chandicha,

If Paulochan, the King Lear, wants to leer at me in the role of
Cordele, what he will see in me would be wrong bulges at wrong places
and he would be in a bitter shock. But perversion and imagination can
have no limits! Who is the choreographer? ....Sudhy?
Well Chandicha, yesterday my "sambandhi" from Kochi was here. He is of
1954 SB batch. Sunny was well known to him while teaching there and he
has met him after the latter's term too. I asked him about Shepherd
sir. He felt confidently that Sir was not known for any bad habits.
He also was confident that CA Shepherd was from UK. But when I
explained this debate to him he has agreed to get me details from SB-
Kochi Alumni chapter President & Secretary who stay close by! So I
will try to get some fresh inputs soon.

Yes, VPP Namboothiri was MLA of Thiruvalla for long, a family friend
of ours, was living at Mannar near the "Cycle Mukku". Right across
their house is "Pana-annar Kaavu" - where Kadamattathu Kathanar
nailed the troublsome Yakhshi! (One of the stories in Eitheehamaala is
a fantastic book which I read in school days! I recommend every Mallu
to read it. It is fun, capturing....You will come across Naraanthu
Pranthan, Parchi Petta Panthirukulam,....)
