Does anybody know
Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel
What was he doing in Trivandrum
Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel (18 December 1865, Lohmen, Kingdom of Saxony - 8 February 1956, Bangalore) was a German botanist and garden designer who was best known for his work at the Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens in Bangalore and for the planning of the avenues of Bangalore.
Krumbiegel was born in Lohmen near Dresden, capital of the eastern German state of Saxony, and his early studies were in Wilsdruff and Dresden after which he trained in horticulture in Pillnitz. In 1884 he worked in Schwerin and from 1885 to 1887 he worked as a landscape gardener in Hamburg. In 1888, he moved to England, designing flower beds at Hyde Park and became a staff at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew. He then took up a position in 1893 with the princely state of Baroda as Curator of the botanical gardens there. He also worked with the Government Botanical Gardens at Ootacamund and was responsible for redesign of the architecture. In 1908 he was requested by Krishnaraja Wodeyar, the ruler of Mysore to serve him and he succeeded John Cameron at the Lal Bagh Gardens as an economic botanist and superintendent.

Krumbiegel and Trivandrum
Further South, the erstwhile princely state of Travancore was undergoing many changes under the rule of Chithira Tirunal Bala Rama Varma, who came to the throne in 1931. As part of infrastructure development and beautification of Thiruvananthapuram, the Town Planning Department sought the assistance of Dr. Krumbiegel in 1932. Dr. Krumbiegel’s reputation as a master horticulturist and town planner and his association with the Mysore royalty might be the reason why his name was suggested in the first place. Moreover, it is probable that Chithira Tirunal, during his stay in Bangalore for administrative training (1930-31), might have had gathered first-hand information on the work of Dr. Krumbiegel.
In his proposal for Thiruvananthapuram, Dr. Krumbiegel stressed on the need for beautification of the township and its iconic structures. He also aligned and designed approach roads to Kanakakunnu and Vellayambalam palaces. The gardens in the State Guest House and Cliff House, as well as the realignment of some of the roads were proposed by him.
A careful survey of the city roads was carried out in 1932 and measures were proposed for its improvement by Dr. Krumbiegel. He advised the government to demolish the old mud walls ( kayyala ) lining either side of the Kowdiar-Vellayambalam road, in order to construct the more stable and aesthetically appealing boundary walls that we see today. Krumbiegel, as a first step towards the implementation of his proposal, worked on the stretch between Kowdiar palace gate and Vellayambalam junction. The beautifully designed Kowdiar Avenue Road was formally inaugurated in 1945. Later, Dr. Krumbiegel’s expertise was sought after by the government in the preparation of Thampanoor Valley, Pangode and Vellayambalam-Mascot Hotel Roads. Dr. Krumbiegel, in his proposal for a Marina road, advised the government to establish a direct road along the coastal line, connecting Sangumugham and Kovalam.

In 1933, during his stay in Thiruvananthapuram, Dr. Krumbiegel prepared designs for the extension of Kowdiar palace complex and the Tennis Pavilion. In order to improve the quality of open spaces, he advised the government to develop Puttarikandam into a public park and brought it under a Town Planning Scheme.
It is unfortunate that Dr. Krumbiegel, despite his contributions to the beautification of Thiruvananthapuram, still remains relatively unknown to the public.

It is not all a serious thing of unknowing such names as of late we may not be knowing our own neighbor. Friend Haneef is reminding us to recollect our own good old college mates so that there may not be any embarrassing moments in the upcoming G2G. So A KR can publish the latest photos in our site prior to our meet. Other than Hitler who else is made known when there are many as we were not.

After 1932, Krumbiegel continued to live in Bangalore, working as consulting architect and advisor in town planning and horticulture, till his death in 1956. He was buried at the Methodist cemetery on Hosur Road, Bangalore.
In 2016, 60 years after his death, Krumbiegel's grave was given a facelift by the government of Karnataka in honour of his contributions
The Krumbiegel Road, located between Lalbagh and Mavalli is named after him.
This year’s Republic Day flower show at Lalbagh had a special guest. great granddaughter of botanist Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel who earned the title 'Garden City' for Bengaluru, was visiting the city for the first time.
Alyia Phelps-Gardiner Krumbiegel, 55, great-granddaughter of Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel - the German botanist who transformed Lalbagh into the marvel it is today - was overwhelmed on finding that her ancestor's legacy remained enshrined in the minds of Bengalureans till this day. Alyia, who is in the city for the first time, paid a visit to the final resting place of Krumbiegel at Richmond Town.
Alyia, who was at the Press Club, said, "I am already in love with Bengaluru. I wanted to come here ever since I learnt about my great-grandfather's connection with the city at a floral exhibition that was held in Germany in June last year. I want to explore this city." Although it was her first visit to the city, Alyia, a London resident, said that she would surely visit Bengaluru again, with her children in tow.
