Hi all,
How do others take a roll call on a Google Meet. Discussing the best ways of doing this should there be a school closure.
There are a number of ways that we took roll call during the last closure: calling out names / asking students to write their name on the comments section. This can be cumbersome to check. Would be interested to hear what others do.
Have heard about a Google Chrome extension "Meet Attendance" (Link below)
IS anyone using this? Are there any GDPR concerns with it?
Thanks
Irene

This feature was rolled out then rolled back. I thought it was back out thought. I haven't used meet lately for any large meetings so maybe someone else could verify. :

My notes of the webinar say that we were told attendance recording is only available with the Enterprise version of Google Classroom.

Ok folks gave it a go there. Attendance is working.. you get a google sheet with entry/exist times. Also you get a sheet with any questions asks with a decent amount of detail:

Thanks Con - But Enterprise only!!
Jumping in here to ask what else ill be missing out on if we dont go enterprise?

1. No attendance module on meet
2. No breakouts in meet
3. Only 5 assignments can use the originality tracker

I know I kept asking on the webinar but I was on a mission to see what the differences are 🙃

Thanks everyone
I had no idea "enterprise" existed.
So am I right in assuming that there is no way to take roll of attendees with the "normal" G suite?

Hi Irenen,

There were two popular ways of taking the roll on Meet when we were working from home:

One option was to record the meeting from the beginning and ask students to comment 'hi'  in the chat bar to mark their attendance. A record of the chat is forwarded to your email with the recording after the Meet.

Option two was the old fashion roll call, the teacher simply called the roll at the beginning of the Meet and it served to get everyone arriving on time 'to make the roll', settle down the students at the beginning of the Meet and it also gave everyone the opportunity to open their mic and simply say hi/here to record their attendance.

Kind regards,
Trevor

Thanks Trevor,
We did similar. Some students found it frustrating with the roll call especially if a class of 30. Also did the comments too and got them to say "hi" that way. Still takes time after the meet esp for a big class.
Really like the sound of the attendance feature "Meeting Attendance" - pity it has to be paid for.

Hi all,

Yes, you are correct - the ability to take attendance at Meets within Meet itself is only available to Enterprise accounts. There have been some Chrome extensions launched for this, but none seem to be 100% reliable (yet, at least) from what I've seen.

If the Meet is recorded, which is doable at the moment, the Chat is also saved in your Drive, as mentioned by Trevor. Unfortunately, the ability to fully record Meets is being disabled shortly for non-Enterprise accounts, with recordings becoming 'Temporary Recordings' and will only be accessible for 30 days. As these have not yet become available, I don't know if the Chat will be saved in the same way.

Trevor's suggestion to take a traditional roll call is a workaround that definitely will always be available! Another suggestion is to have a Google form to have the students sign in. I'd suggest having this as a form that collects email addresses, and then any other question, either related to the lesson/topic, or a 'fun' question. This way you'd have a time stamp on the attendance also, and it could also pique attention if the question is related to the class/meeting.

Best wishes,

Orna

Also worth mentioning temporary recordings will not be downloadable or sharable outside domain.

In answer to Clare's question on what's on the Enterprise version the key features are:
Larger Meets, Recording, Breakout Rooms, Polls, Attendence reports, Livestream, Advanced Noise Cancellation.

Admin tolls like enhanced mobile management and data location and loss prevention.

Some classroom tools like originality reports also.

Google were doing an offer last month of €24/year per teacher with three year price lock f registering all teachers. I can check if there an extension to this if anyone is interested.
