Sorry for two iPad questions in one week - I'll ease off after this :)

For those of you that have iPads - do you use them much in your
teaching? I searched the archive here and see that some hook them up
the IWB and use them. In what way do you use them - specific Apps?

I teach Maths, Chemistry and ICT if that's any help. I've been ogling
the Theodore Gray Elements App so that will be on my list definitely.

Will the 2012 conference have anything related to my new toy? :)

Many thanks
Mairead

Hi Mairead,
Just read your query .... I'd be interested in any good replies that you receive as I am about to start writing a dissertation on the use of ICT as a classroom management tool for teachers.
My dissertation is based on the effective use of ICT for classroom management .... example recording work done/attendance / recording results ect. Check out the App: classdojo. I searched for Apps using classroom administration.
If I had the time, I would like to create an App that uses the iPad as a teacher tool. I have some ideas that I think would be worthwhile but I may only be able to do it next summer.

Regards,
Trevor Collins

Thanks for that Trevor - will check out that App.

I have iStudiezPro (I think it's called) on my iPhone but rarely use
it for more than a time table

Hi Mairead, Trevor

I got an iPad last summer and made a conscious decision to use it as my only classroom management tool. I do my rolls, class plans and anything else that I would usually write.  I felt a bit strange at a recent parent teacher meeting as I sat with my technology and scrolled as I spoke to parents, as my colleagues had roll books, paper etc.  It takes getting used to.  I'm using Pages and Numbers and syn with my desktop at home for back up.  I am relatively new to Apple although I would have dabbled over the years.  Most of my kit is Windows.  I teach in a secondary school.

In the past I trialled an Asus mini-pad to do the same and the main issue was battery life.  After that year long test I went back to pen and paper.  I don't expect to make the same decision at the end of this year.

I hope that might be of some value in your endeavours.

Hi Mairead,

As one of the schools that introduced iPads this year, our initial aim was for the iPad to be a substitution device for books and in the long-term our aim is for the device to be an effective method deploying teacher created contented coupled with appropriate educational related apps developed by private companies. I can say that the deployment of the device has been very successful. I base this view on the data we extracted from our most recent survey of our first year parents.

I totally agree with the view that iPads/netbooks/notebooks can never replace the pedagogy value of the teacher. True learning involves oral language development, improving reading & comprehension skills, sentence structure and numeracy development. IT devices will never replace that need they can only support the learner as an assistive device, which supports multi sensory teaching methodologies.

In an effort to support numeracy and literacy development our VLE has a suit of learning resources that will assist teachers in meeting the aims of the department's Lit & Num strategy.

We are continuing to work on, identifying a suite of apps, which are relevant to the Irish post primary sector and have a renewed focus effort on up skilling teachers on its use within the classroom. This hopefully, will be achieved thanks to our job bridge intern whose priority for the next five months will be to train our staff on the use of the iPad and VLE in the classroom.

On a more gentler note, if one wants to know if an IT device can have a positive impact on learning and teaching? Consider this....... One of my colleagues who finds IT challenging, threatened to retire if iPads were introduced with our first year cohort. However once she encountered an app developed by Folens for a specific modern language she spent two weeks knocking on my door asking if we had received the licences from Eugene to use the app in question. That teacher who rarely turns on her data projector had 60 of first years at one stage in the lunchroom using the iPad through the medium of our Multimedia presentation suite to support her in delivering a lesson. She was and remains convinced that the Ipad would have a profound positive impact on how she teaches a modern language.

Please excuse me if my writing is a little mechanical I am after finishing a college assignment and my head is a little fried.

All the best,
Daniel

Dear all,

I blog at http://inspiringteaching.com/wordpress/ and try to comment/find one app every month (used to do it weekly) there is now more than an academic years worth of suggestions. I started this as a way of giving staff in the school a "quick fix" of ICT without over saturating them!  I used to use Moodle for this in a school overseas and when I was leaving they asked if I would email the list to them every time. To overcome this I just created a public blog instead. I find twitter a really useful way of keeping up with apps. Several members of our staff have now bought ipads and as my last post proves they are now suggesting apps to me!

Some great ideas for future posts here - thanks

I’ve been using a Windows tablet since 2004 since 2004.  I keep my mark book on it and using excel to generate trend graphs of individual student performace over time etc. As ePortal works on Windows (but not on Mac OS) I can use it to do roll call and reports.

I am currently playing around with an Asus Eee Pad Tranformer (1st Gen). It has many advantages over iPad in that is plays Flash (it will take HTML5 a long time to completely replace Flash); has USB ports and SD slots, HDMI out and 16 hours of battery life thanks to the dockable keyboard for the same price as an iPad. It comes with Polarsis MS-compatible office programmes and of course all of Google’s stuff works great on it. There is a new quad core version out so all told it wipes the floor with iPad. And there’s this sort of thing http://www.android4schools.com/.

If one is looking for iPad to reduce weight of books – it will do that.
If one is looking to increase attainment – there is no research to back that up. The only approximately research I know was done by BECTA in the UK in 2005 and showed computers did not increase attainment. There is currently some research being done in Reed University in USA but this is 3rd level and doesn’t involve a control group. I was told there was one in Sweden in a secondary setting but can not find it on the interweb.

Are they more fun? Yes – for now. I wheeled out an overhead projector the before the Christmas and my third years were quite excited by it!

Apples recent announcement is disappointing in that eBooks, for me, represents a poor use of the technology (besides the various conditions on use). A whole new pedagogy is needed to make the best use of these devices but that pedagogy does not exist, yet.

Irish publishers offerings at the moment (certainly for my subject geography) are really big-button simplified versions of Pdfs.

Would I buy sets of Androids for school? Not necessarily. Nor iPad.  And certainly not until Windows 8 Tablets appear. One issue schools will have to consider in the 3 years life span (or more of) of these devices is the different versions that come on the market over time – seniors with version 1, juniors with version 2 or 3 etc.

EdCo, CJ Fallon and Folens recently stated (admittedly it was at a talk in conjunction with Apple) that they do not currently have plans to support Android so if you want to reduce the weight of school bag then you will need to have an iPad or Windows 7/8 device.

The stategy that publishers are adopting at the moment is that of substitution. The electronic version is a page for page replica of the printed version. There may be some limited interactive elements. Electronic version will provide annotation, bookmarks and notes which can be saved to the publisher's cloud so that if device is damaged the notes etc are not lost.

As I said publishers were unlikely to be plugging Android at an Apple co-hosted event but nevertheless this type of uncertainty is not helpful for schools trying to make decisions for coming academic year.

You obviously have rock solid wireless and an SLA on your broadband if you are thinking about the chromebook option.

Android devices open pdfs and the online versions can of course be accessed via the web. In fact, the online versions require flash – something missing from Apple.

I spoke with Eugene from Folens last April & May and was told they would have Android by September. Clearly this didn’t happen but it would be foolish not to consider it.

One interesting note from the Apple event was Phil Shiller referring to books as being invented in the 1400s!!

Hi,
Results of a study from California are starting to show direct results
from the use of personal devices and well-designed educational
content. While I have a problem with the philosophical approach of
only accepting quantitative data as evidence supporting the use of
technology in education, that is exactly what this study set out to
provide. The research methodology included a control groups and random
selection of subjects from the overall population:

"As part of the study in Riverside, two teachers would each have one
of their Algebra sections randomly selected to use the HMH Fuse:
Algebra I app, while all other Algebra classes, taught by the same
teachers, would use the textbook version of the same program. This
would allow researchers to determine if using HMH Fuse: Algebra I led
to changes in student performance."

Results:
"Figure 1 depicts, results of the 2011 CST found that using Fuse had a
positive impact on student achievement at the end of the year.
Comparing student performance, over 78% of students using HMH Fuse
scored Proficient or Advanced on the state test, 10 compared to only
59% of their fellow students at Earhart – a difference of 19% in favor
of students using the HMH Fuse app. As students were randomly assigned
to use HMH Fuse, the results indicated that use of the app was the
chief cause behind the improvement in student test scores."

The link for the research paper is here:
http://www.hmheducation.com/fuse/pdf/hmh-fuse-riverside-whitepaper.pdf

It was research that was sponsored by a commercial body so it would be
beneficial to see a more rigorous academic-led research project for
the future; nonetheless the results are interesting and would begin to
counter the claim that there is no proof that technology improves
education outcomes.

We are perhaps at the first time when the mix of technology, pedagogy
and content are developed enough to work in concert to produce the
types of gains in achievement that have been long promised. It would
be closed-minded to stop trying to deliver on the potential of
technology because of past shortcomings in its use. All of these
trials and programmes are facing a learning curve, and in the field of
education we must live our educational values by trying new things,
testing them, improving them and holding on to what works.

The research looks interesting....I would be very interested in the entering
characteristics of the cohorts.

Not everything that is good in education can be reduced down to quantitative
research but when it comes to attainment, it is the only thing.

Certainly there is no place for luddites in the currrent climate. But
assertions as to the veracity of specific technologies need to be tested
lest those who know least make decisions that adversely affect the education
of their charges.

A bad teacher affects generations. So to do bad decisions about technology.
We must ensure that the values that inform our education are driven by the
welfare of the child and not be commercial concerns as is already the case
in NYC and some other US states.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the great feedback!
Just curious in terms of VLE and iPads, did you manage to integrate
Moodle with the iPads?
We would like to introduce iPads but the problem we are facing is how
students will access content from Moodle with the iPads.
Teachers here use Moodle quite a lot and our initial research showed
that this currently isn't possible.

I can say that the deployment of the device has been very successful.  I base this view on the data we extracted from our most recent survey of our first year parents.

Erol,

The Moodle 2.2 app for the iPad is very good and getting better (I've had a sneak preview of the next version)

Hi Erol,
I'm not sure I understand what you mean about Moodle not being integrated with the ipad. There are two options here as I understand it:

1. Access your Moodle installation throught the safari browser on the ipad as you'd access any website.
2. Install a dedicated ipad moodle app. One that's ready to go annd doesn't need any server-side tweaks is mtouch - info below

Ronan

mTouch - Description

The first and the most functional native iPhone/iPod Touch app for Moodle. mTouch is intended for STUDENT USAGE scenarios and no server side intallation or tweaks are required. You can begin using mTouch right away.

PLEASE NOTE: This app supports only STUDENT functions and scenarios. Teachers and admins please check out moodlEZ, our Moodle specific web browser for iPad.

With mTouch you can

- List courses you are enrolled to

- View topics of a selected course

- View course assignments, edit your submissions and upload files

- View forums and post to forums

- View upcoming events, add event to calendar

- View course glossaries, add entries to glossaries and comment on glossary entries

- View list of course resources, download/display resources

- Join course chats

- Open files from other apps or send files to other apps

- Take photos and upload to Moodle forums, assignments or other activities which require or support attachments

- Upload existing photos to Moodle activities

- Download files from any web site and upload these files to Moodle activities

- List quizzes and see your quiz attempt reviews (*)

- View your grades for all courses and inspect grading details for a selected course

- View course choices (*)

- View lessons of a selected course (*)

- View surveys (*)

- View wikis (*)

- View SCORMs and SCORM package content (*)

- Record video/sound and upload to Moodle

- Register calendar events for local notifications

- Custom scheme support. Ability to open safe browsers like Mobicip

- File sharing support. Copy files from your computer with iTunes

(*) Details of these activities are access through internal web browser

We also offer custom branding plans for institiutions. Please visit our web site for more details on this.

From what I can see with mTouch, you can only upload movies and photos from an iPhone for example - there's no way to upload say a text document?

Hi all

Interesting discussion.  I thought I'd share some of my experiences with the iPad when I got it first.  It's a bit outdated possibly but probably still relevant. http://www.anseo.net/teaching-with-an-ipad/

I'm still not entirely convinced that the iPad itself is the way to go for primary schools yet but Apple do make exceedingly beautiful things!

Take care
