Hi,

Just a quick question RE Smartboard licences. The company we purchased a number of Smartboards from more than 4 years ago have recently been in touch saying that our Smart licensing is due for renewal. We had purchased a number of Smartboards previously to this and have never had to renew any licences. I know there have been lots of changes in Smart over the last couple of years but was just wondering if this is indeed the case and we do have to renew our licences with them for the most recent Smartboards we have after more than 4 years of owning them? The company are telling me that is an annual subscription going forward.

Thanks,

Fiona

Hi Fiona,
In 2016, we decided in a primary school I help in, to go for a combination of teacher training and smart board software update.

Teacher Training
Training was free, and in-school, funded by the local education centre. The training was excellent - very practical tips for each year group from junior infants to sixth class.

Smart board software update
Cost to update was €300 for 8 smart boards.

We found a very positive response to the training and a greater use of the smart board features by teachers after training and upgrade.

Just to make you aware, when visiting Bett Show in 2017, I saw that smart and the other providers are moving/have moved away from projectors to touchscreen. This may involve different training.

Please feel free to contact me directly if I can offer any further information.

Best regards,
Eoin

Smart introduced a license charge 3-4 years ago when running Version 12.5 or later. Many schools have stuck with, or have downgraded to older version of the software to avoid the fee.
Many folk don't see the need for upgrading and are happy to use the older version without the need for license charge.

Just wondering what people's experience's have been in moving from Win7 to Win10 and Smartboard licences? What should I be aware of or is it just a matter of buying a Smart licence for Win10 and installing?

Cheers,
Helen
