Hi

A friend of mine (TEFL teacher)  uses images to initiate conversation in the classroom, he likes to move from image to image dynamically depending on the conversation that the students are having in class

Currently he stores the images in Dropbox and then opens each image manually depending on the conversation happening in the classroom

However he finds this a bit cumbersome, I have suggested embedding the images in PowerPoint, or Articulate or even Prezi, but he said that these won’t give him flexibility that he needs, (i.e. clicking to exactly the image he wants freely)

I suggested that he might upload the images to a repository like Flickr and tag the images with various tags so that when his students are discussing a certain theme , he can quickly and easily see what tagged images he has in relation to those themes and then show a relevant image

Does anyone have any suggestions of tools or apps that could be useful to this type of activity?

(I hope I am describing this clearly!)

Muireann

Hi Muireann,

Could you clarify:
  1. Does he have internet access in the class (or is he syncing the dropbox folder so that it is available offline)?
  2. Does he need the images to be public or private during (and after) the class? e.g. only he can open them, not the students following the class?
  3. Roughly how many images per class (tens or hundreds?)
Regards,

Stephen

HI Stephen
thanks for your response, answers are after each question below

  • Does he have internet access in the class (or is he syncing the dropbox folder so that it is available offline)? Yes he has internet access in class
  • Does he need the images to be public or private during (and after) the class? e.g. only he can open them, not the students following the class? I am not fully sure but I think the images would preferably be kept in a private space
  • Roughly how many images per class (tens or hundreds?) under  50 images

thanks a million for any help you ar anyone else can offer

best wishes

Hi Muireann,

I use a similar approach that you described originally, I host all the photos on the cloud (in Skydrive in my case but similar idea with Dropbox) and then open as needed in the browser.
Not sure he's going to find anything easier than that, unless finding the right photo is the issue?
In that case, either your tags solution would be good (but requires discipline of keeping the tags updated/remembering the tags) or use the large thumbnail view in Dropbox/Skydrive/Flickr to find them without tags.

Stephen

Hi

There are lots of free to use images on my elearning resource

I will be sending out a proper announcement closer to the end of August to let everyone know it is now a free resource (with premium options).

The images are already themed to EU and Environment/Pollution topics. There are links to more too.

Hope this helps

Ciao

Camilla

thanks Stephen and Camilla for your thoughts and suggestions

I'm not sure there is an easier way of hosting these images, but perhaps something will come up and if so I will share it back here

best wishes

Dan Meyer recommends using something like Delicious for this.

See his keynote at CESI:

From about 15:20 onwards.  HT to Pádraig Ó Dubhaigh for the video.

PS

this may be more suited to tagging websites (sorry, I haven't had time to check). In any case, I think the tagging idea is the way to go, and picassa makes sense as you can use it offline.

Use Blogspot.ie in flipcard mode. You can tag and label and sort and reference all your media visually:

Be sure to hit the label button at the top to see how this person has gone to great detail in labeling the topics. It is a great way to save images and any data that goes with them.
