Hey

Early I am hoping to do 1/2  - 1 term of weekly 1 hour lessons on MicroBit in the hope to get a bit more STEM in the lessons and truly engineer a solution.

I have taught this before with sucess but usually using the standard inboard inputs and sensors, i.e. show text/emoji, radio channels send message to another device, send a warning based on light reading, magic 8 ball on shake etc.

These are all fun but i want to stretch the pupil's minds and learning  (and my skills !)

I bought a book on it but it was as dull as dishwater.

Does anyone know of some great (realistic) lessons that worked well? I believe the school has a few € to give me for addons I know MicroBit v2 has built in Microphone and speakers (so that will save a few €!)

Any advice or suggestions you have I welcome in advance

Thank you

Tim

Hi Tim,

We purchased the IOT kits and the Smarthome kits for the microbits.

We had great fun with them.  They come with full instructions and step by step coding sequences.

We got the kids to research sustainable energy and global warming.

They built model houses with solar panels, geothermal heating and water pumps to negate flood damage.

They also come with air quality sensors which can be used for measuring the air quality in your classrooms.

We bought them from SG education in Sligo.

If you have any questions or queries I'd be delighted to share.

Regards,
Dermot

Hello Tim

I am not sure if this will interest you but we have datalogging software for the Micro:bit on an annual licence fee.

Hi Tim,

We run various workshops with CoderDojos, Primary and Secondary schools using the Micro:bit.

All our S.T.E.A.M. workshops (usually) are Maker-led and project-based.

An example of this (using Micro:bits) would be building a haunted house.
  • We got an old press and painted it black
  • Room 1 - Carve a pumpkin and put LEDs (attached to a Micro:bit) in the pumpkin as lights - programme them for colour, blink, etc.
  • Room 2 - Cover front of room with baking parchment - paint parchment withscary  silhouette - again put lights behind and programme them for colour, blink, etc.
  • Room 3 - Attach servo to Micro:bit - attach fishing line to servo - attach skeleton/ghost/bat, etc. to fishing line - programme Micro:bit for movement - randomise
You get the idea...

This is just an example of one project - we find bringing any SBC (single-board computer) into the real world really changes up lessons for students and makes it applicable to real life.
  • Another option (as mentioned) it to tie it to climate change.
  • Energy saver
  • Pedometer
  • Temperature sensor, etc.
  • all make it an excellent choice
There are loads of things to do with SBC - especially when combined with external devices. I would shy away from kits… while they are great starters, they tend to be overly expensive

Feel free to reach out if you’d like more information.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Tim,

Great that you are using Microbits to teach in the classroom, we think they're the best "bang for you buck" hardware you can buy.

We have lots or Microbit projects that are ready to use in the classroom. We have both standalone Microbit lessons and lessons that use Microbit accessories such as robot cars, traffic lights, soil sensors, RGB LEDs etc. You can see the Microbit lessons we have at the link below and if you've like to use them in your classroom, drop me an email at al...@codingireland.ie.

Thanks,
Alan
